Listening to this again, this is the best Smiths album, say what you want about The Queen Is Dead, but this is more consistent and strong set of songs. Unlike Weezer, The Smiths went out at the top of their game.

My ol' roommate just played a couple of records that are way better than I would have every expected... Not that these are like, high art or anything - but when you consider the drek these two have released in the past few years -well, I was pleasantly surprised upon hearing:

Madonna gives up trying to say anything important and simply croons to techno a'la Donna Summer, and Prince rediscovers his love of drum machines. I must admit - I was impressed at how these records sounded, especially since I'd pretty much written off these 2 years ago.

Yes, I'm serious. I still like it, though not nearly as much as I did back in '01. I was stupid for this record back then, even went to see him live, which, despite the abundance of teeny bop girls, it was a good show. Which prompted me to pick this up, though who knows when I'll spin this again:

I'm not a huge Mayer fan, but the live version of "3x5" that kicks off Any Given Thursday is excellent. I don't like the studio version nearly as much.

I wasn't a huge fan of Johnny-boy, then I caught the JM Trio 'free concert' on DirecTV a couple of months back. Still not a 'huge' fan, per se, but there's no denying the boy's chops. He definitely spent a fair amount of time trying his best to channel SRV, but if you're going to steal licks from somebody, you could do worse....

It's nothing too special - "Try Try Try" and 3 non-LP throwaways, but one track is a cover of DMZ's "Don't Jump Me, Mother" (they were one of my favorite punk bands a looong time ago). The diversity of this guy's influences continues to amaze me.

Definitely not. Pretty much anything else would be better. I'd just go straight to Violator or Music for the Masses.

Christ, when was the last time I listened to a They Might Be Giants album? What a bizarre band. Why would anyone even bother to create a song like "Rabid Child"? What the fuck is with those lyrics? Are they supposed to be funny or something? Every single one of their songs just sounds like some dumb, indecipherable in-joke. Still. I love this early shit. Yep. Goodbye.
