what do you think of him? I love his songwriting and arrangements, but at the same time he has quite an element of kitsch to him that acts as a barrier for me...

That Austin City Limits blues CD is one of the best I own - great, great blues stuff on it.

The 12" 80's one is a lot of fun - The Cure, Human League, Japan, Visage, Simple Minds etc

Tuung - The Pioneers EP

QUOTE
If you haven't discovered the delights of Tuung yet and their strange world then this is a very pretty place to start, like all their releases utmost care is taken over the look of the records thi s one is etched on one side in an old fashioned scored kind of way. Like all their releases this mixes glitchy electronics and Bert Janch, Nick Drake style folk with natural ease. This is a cover version of Bloc Parties best song 'The Pioneers'.

I could see that. I really like him though. He was an eccentric performing his work in his own bubble, almost unaware of what was going on in the music scene. Kind of an acquired taste, but well worth taking the time for.

I'll post some YSIs when I get a chance.

The Wrens - Meadowlands I'm honestly beginning to think that this may be the best album of the 00's. Everytime I listen to it, I just get more and more amazed at the perfectly conrolled reckless beauty of each song, the magnificiently timed crescendoes, the subtle harmonies...

I too question if I've given it enough of a chance! I listened to it a month or so back and was really disappointed. I popped it in again last night and while it sounded a little better, there still wasn't anything that struck me quite like their past couple of albums. We'll give it another shot sometime soon.

Then hopefully you won't mind that this is coming out domestically on February 21. wink.gif

I decided to wait for this one, seeing as I bought Malcolm Middleton's last album on import only to have it come out domestically a few months later. The wait was a bit longer for Arab Strap, but being overwhelmed with other music, I can't say that I was pining for it.

This may be a cultural difference as to what a cocktail lounge is... I wasn't using it as an insult, just a qualifer. I think it's a great album, but only in a certain context.

I was specifically thinking of places like Vespa Lounge and Tupelo in Wellington, where that style of dark, brooding music, amongst other things, is predominant around 4am in the morning. Next time you're in town I'll take you there and you'll see what I mean. wink.gif

Oh, ok. I suppose every album's greatness is relative to context.
