Scott Walker -- The Drift
This is a waltz for a dodo
A samba for Bambi
Gavotte for the Kaiser
Bolero for Beuys
A reel for Red Rosa
A polka for Tintin
Hell of an album. I only dare listen to it during the day because I'm honestly frightened by it. I think the Satanic Donal Duck bit during "The Escape" is to blame.

The Reader article is very good, focusing on his earliest work. Since reading it, I've been digging his first three Capitol LPs (long out of print, but easy to find online).
Really surprised at how good these records are, because like most people with good taste, I hate Bob Seger.
yep, me too... but you gotta admit, even the stuff that is hated is pretty damn good songwriting.

Which is to say I've given it three listens since I woke up, not that I'd heard it only twice before now. Natch.
"Man Is Not A Bird" really grooves the fuck out at the end.

Absolutely. They were pretty much all my ears could pay attention to for a good couple of minutes this morning.
I love Broadcast but Tender Buttons aside, I could really stand to familiarize myself with their records way more. There's a lot of stuff going on throughout Haha Sound.

May 25 2011, 03:01 PM
Haha Sound is perhaps my favorite Broadcast album. It's just intricate, detailed work that just works. The melodies throughout the album are unnatural, but don't feel contrived. It definitely packs a punch for such a short album.

The "Valerie" lyrics made a bit more sense after having seen the film that they're referencing.
Not as blatantly as the ones in "The Seventh Seal" did, but still pretty fun.

Yeah, I had wondered why Broadcast decided to do a library music album like Witch Cults..., and it then dawned on me they had been doing work like that for awhile now, like with "Valerie."

I love that people are getting into Bob Seger but... there's more to him than the apparently hip enough pre-Silver Bullet Band material. Not a whole lot more, admittedly, but Night Moves is a damn fine album. I can't imagine anything but the most played out "Urgh, M.O.R. '70s album rock!" oldster bias keeping somebody from admitting that "Ship of Fools" is a damn fine song. And that "Rock & Roll Never Forgets" is arguably a more streamlined version of songs like "Get Out of Denver"... but not to much of an extent, really.

I also wasn't aware of the Seger resurgence until people started talking about that Reader article a couple pages ago. I'm into that, just not the sentiment that the only stuff worth checking out is the System material.
And Seven is indeed a total jam.

Just saying it sounds like a product of the late 80s/early 90s, slightly experimental but with strong hooks. Admittedly, I haven't listened to
Colour of Spring in awhile, but I hear touches of that same quiet oddness in, e.g., "Hannah" that I hear in Talk Talk - but not nearly as extreme as
Spirit of Eden or
Laughing Stock - and I don't think a New Order or Prefab Sprout hit is too far of a touchstone when talking about tunes like "I Don't Know Why I Love You" or "Shine On".

like Pigfuck was saying earlier in the thread, my interest in early Seger started out with those Greg Cartwright radio shows that we were all freaking out on a few years back. i bought that Bob Seger System record and Mongrel and that was really about it... then the Reader article popped up last week and i found that bootleg mix thing.
not sure what Paves is getting worked up about here. sure, Night Moves and Rock and Roll Never Forgets are fine tunes, I just would rather hear his earlier more reckless stuff. and its really not a hipster reactionary thing, I just like those early records.

lately preferring this to
A New Way to Pay Old Debts. Even though it's a live recording, the fidelity is better on this than
New Way. And even though the runtime overall is shorter, it feels a bit more monolithic and "important", probably because the whole thing works together as one piece of music. More varied in tone and style too. Really happy that both pieces of music exist though, obvs.

More vocals on this, too. Which is great because it means that he's willing to warm up to new approaches and keep stuff interesting. If he doesn't retire from music again too soon, imagine how much awesome fucked up music he'll have been involved in over the next ten, even five years.
