I've only been to Auckland. How different is Wellington?

Wellington's more compact, more cosmopolitan, more scenic, much better street & nightlife. I pretty much hate Auckland. A spread out suburban nightmare.

How does this stack up to her previous efforts? Saw her perform a new track on Letterman and wasn't blown away.

The Beth Orton is a grower. Seemed pretty boring on a distracted first listen. But it was very solid on subsequent plays with lots of little musical and lyrical nuances coming through. And I'm always going to love that voice. Maybe it lacks the highest highs of her other albums, but is probably more consistent all the way through.

You gotta love those European 50 year copyright laws, so all of that proto-rock, pre-1955 greatness can be compiled in one place (118 songs, 4 CDs, 5+ hours, 60 pages of liner notes, $22)

Still undecided about this.

From their website:

the bodingtons

What started as a solo project for singer/songwriter Mark Gerard Helbock has turned into a new rock band made up of members of the Lemongrass band, the Badlees and the Cellarbirds.

Mark, Casey Pesce and Phil Pesce who were part of “the lemongrass band” have joined forces with Bret Alexander and Paul Smith of the Badlees/Cellarbirds to form a new rock sensation called "the Bodingtons".

The Grass had made national and international noise between 1998-2001 first with the release of the EP “Eight Feet And Rising” and then with the full length “Good Day”. Touring with Phish, Marshall Tucker Band and From Good Homes to name just a few and recording with legendary producer Paul Hornsby.

The Badlees scored two Top 10 singles in '95 with "Fear of Falling" and "Angeline Is Coming Home" for Polygram Records and their latest project The Cellarbirds - "Perfect Smile" was one of the most highly praised independent label releases of 2001 on S.A.M. Records

The Bodingtons self-titled debut CD will be released to the world January 2006. The sounds on the disc dig back to the early days of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers as well as stealing some thunder from newer bands like Fountains of Wayne. The Bodingtons have put together 10 pop/rock classics for their debut disc including the first single "Hold On Me" which has a distinctly "beatle-esque" feel to it.

Yes, it is Jeff Lynne and the Move w/ their final record before ELO. It has an early version of "Do Ya", and a track that was later covered by Cheap Trick (and probably better known ), "California Man".

Just beg for the YSI! (I'll try to post it in the next day or two)

The cover is one of the best I've seen in years.

I was hoping the album would get better with repeated listens, but I guess the album is going to sit right next to Glamour. A couple of brutally great songs and a whole lot of pleasant stuff cushioning the awesomeness. It's so frustrating when "Cavalry" could be my favorite song of the year thus far.
