The Loud Family - Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things

Some of Scott Miller's best songwriting, minus (for the most part) the self-indulgent tangents that sometimes marred his other Game Theory and Loud Family albums. Great production work by Mitch Easter as well.

Kinda dissapointed with this one. The production is flawless and the songs are pleasant enough, but something's missing.

besides the new stuff I rave about in several threads:

IPB Image IPB ImageIPB Image

The Sea and Cake - The Fawn
Television Personalities - And Don't the Kids Just Love It
Beach Boys - Surf's Up

Surf's Up just keeps getting better and better each time I hear it. It might start climbing into top albums ever soon.

Kinda disappointed that I'm just now finding out about this band. Fantastic dirty, gritty, rock and roll by people old enough to be grandparents to some of the younger SOMBies.

This is fast overtaking Burial in my affections. Each listen illuminates more intricacies. I know that a lot of people view Dubstep as some obscure IDM backwater but I urge anyone with even a passing interest in break-beat manipulation to get on this.

Top stuff - I was pimping this a while back. Will definitely have to return to it soon.

Also, Burzum: that Burning Witch album a re-issue? It's got a different cover to mine.

God damn do I love Gomez. Got this in the mail today, two unreleased tracks, 34 other singles and b-sides, it's brilliant. I have to listen to this now, even though it's 2:15am, because I just listened to, and was disappointed by this:

BDB made baby Jesus cry with this. Or at least me. Someone please convince me I'm wrong, I just really hope I'm jumping to conclusions here.

Did I miss this in the Fish thread? Also, new BDB? I personally think BDB lost it after (actually, a little bit during) the About a Boy soundtrack, but I'm curious.

George Michael's "One More Try"... what a fucking great song.

honestly i'm pretty pleased by it so far...

i've learned it's just stupid to expect another record the caliber of Bewilderbeast... while Damon is a fantastic artist & songwriter, i think he just got a bit lucky w/ how amazing that record is...

is it amazing so far? nah, but i think i like it better than Fish and possibly 1+1 already...

Being the typical American that I am, I never really bothered with any of the Bur albums that didn't produce singles in the US. Even while a lot of people I trust (on this board and elsewhere) say great things about this (and Leisure and Modern Life Is Rubbish, too), I just never took the bait, until now.

This is Parklife's equal and as good as anything else they've done. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, though.

Ugly cover, beautiful record. It's missing some of the rock of the last disc, but it'll make for a perfect winter record.

Just aquired about 500 or so albums that have been sitting in a relative's garage for the past few decades. So far, I got through some interesting Who bootlegs, the soundtrack to The Egyptian, and the above. I'm gonna need some industrial-strength record cleaner.

Trey Anastasio - Bar 17

This is actually pretty damn good, I'm willing to say its the best studio disc he's put out since firing up the solo gig full-time. Surprising variety throughout, from the rocking "Dragonfly" and "Mud City" to the slower "Goodbye Head" to the jammed out title track. Maybe it just helps that I got to see quite a few of these tracks played live this summer with the Benevento-Russo duo, but they sound pretty great here. Loads and loads of guests on this disc, including the forementioned Duo as well as Mike and Fishman. If you've yet to dive into solo Trey, give this disc a shot - nice balance between the jam tendencies and the more straightforward rock stuff from Shine.

And spending some time with 2006 albums I haven't listened to enough, or haven't listene to in awhile:

IPB Image

Film School - Film School

"11:11" is still a killer track, along with several others, but this still hasn't grabbed me as a whole.

IPB Image

The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics

This one certainly ain't getting any better with time.

IPB Image

Oneida - Happy New Year

Another solid release by these guys, but still not the drop-dead killer I know they have in them.

I think I want "Foreplay/Long Time" played as my coffin is lowered into the ground. Ideally, I'd like it to be on a sophisticated hydraulic system, rocking around, in sync with the song. There will be strobe lights, low budget pyrotechnics, and a couple kegs of Bud. When the guitar solo hits, the coffin will pop open, but I won't be in there...no...I won't. Then, out of nowhere, my corpse will coming zooming over, rigged to a helicopter.

Man, they'll go wild for that shit.

I'm way late to the party, but I gotta say this is basically post of the year. Ryan continues to deliver.

Boris - Vein

Got this in the mail today. I guess this is Boris' hardcore album. It opens and closes with fairly typical Boris-style doom/drone tracks, but in between are 9 or 10 short, fast punk songs. Not what I expected at all but it's great stuff. Hopefully someone will make a nice rip of this and put it on Oink. More people deserve to hear it.

Yeah, it's a gorgeous piece of vinyl. Good luck getting one, the label's website sold out in less than a day. Some stores will have copies and I guess Boris got a few hundred to sell at their shows and eventually through Inoxia, but they will go fast.
