The Beach Boys - Sunflower / Surf's UpI always thought that The Beach Boys imploded after
Pet Sounds and went straight into nostalgia mode/Beach Family eXperience/sitcom appearance hell. I had no idea that they all stuck together for a while and actually recorded some fine albums after that. No one ever talks about them! All I knew about was "Surfin' U.S.A," "God Only Knows," and then "Kokomo." There was a fourth era in there that I missed? Apparently so. These two albums, now available on one CD, have a lot of great songs. I can't tell if this is genius or madness. "Cool Water"? "He Came To My Window"? "Disney Girls"? "Take A Load Off Your Feet"? What could possess someone to write anything like these? There's a lot of great songs here that aren't "wierd" either. "Tears In The Morning" took me by surprise. Devestating stuff. Threadworthy albums.
Tori Amos - Little EarthquakesI like this a lot more than I thought I would! Whether I'm driving home from work late at night or just waking up in the morning, these songs have a quiet intensity to them that's relaxing without sacrificing any depth. I'm definitely going to hear more from her.
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden / Laughing StockI've only listened to each of these twice through, but they're really boring the hell out of me. It's funny, because these were the two albums that I was lead to believe would be really mindblowing, while the rest of their music was supposed to be predictable 80s pop, or something. I haven't heard more than a handful of their songs from the albums before these, but those songs blow this stuff out of the water. I spent money on these albums (you can get them really cheap on Amazon) so I'm not going to give up listening to them just yet. Maybe they'll still click with me. But most stuff like this usually does right away. Early post-rock, as much as it's always been difficult to define, is a sound and an era that has always intrigued me. Slint, Bark Psychosis, Tortoise, Seefeel... I've felt been disappointed by any of this stuff until now.
GZA - Liquid SwordsAs good as
Enter the Wu Tang? Maybe. Has not and will not leave my car's CD player all week. Put it in my shopping cart on Amazon.com when it was $11.99. Two days later I went to buy it and found out that it had been raised to $14.99. Disgusting.
The Field - From Here We Go SublimeI usually don't post in this thread until I've actually bought an album, no matter how many times I've listened to something that I've downloaded. I grabbed this album when it leaked and -- along with the
Sun & Ice EP -- played it enough to get The Field into my
Last.Fm top 10. So buying this was an easy decision. It still sounds great. I hate to ask questions like this, but I wonder how long it's going to hold up before I overplay it?
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? So, yeah.
