Eilen Jewell: Letters from Sinners & Strangers -- Good stuff. I had stumbled upon her on myspace a while back, but never tracked down her disk. Then Kessler's thread on her for elc got me off my ass to download it off emusic. Pretty solid. She borrows bits and pieces from a lot of people, but manages to pull it all together nicely. Kinda a more twangified version of Madelleine Peyroux.

Patty Griffin: Children Running Through -- It had been a while since I listened to this so I popped it in on the way to work this morning. Yep, still one of the best albums of the year in my book.

Patrick Watson: Close to Paradise -- Every time I'd hear the tune "Weight of the World" I'd promise myself I'd track down the album. Well, I finally got it today. Still getting through it, but it sounds pretty damn good so far.

T. Rex - Tanx

I'm going back to Lawrence this weekend and listening to the one band and album (with Electric Warrior a close second) that will always remind me of that city.

Picked up my copy from the store today. And of course I love it. The opening horn blare of fiesta just puts a shit grin on my face that I can't wipe off. And it doesn't stop there! Man did they have fun making this record. Dudes always blow me away.

I'm re-evaluating some of my lesser played 2007 releases tonight while watching the world series on mute. Most of it is ambient stuff, stray music I've put to the side and haven't had time to digest. I've had a busy year, and there's been actual 'great' albums this year that have taken time away from other prospects.

The world on Higher downs - land patterns
beatiful and lushly produced post rock ambient. the songs kind of meander, but I appreciated that more this time around.

Murcof - cosmos
I still haven't made any sense of this stubborn creation of his. Don't have anything in his back catalog to compare it to either.

Strategy - future rock
Seemed alright first time I heard it. Wickedly drugged dubby dance songs.

Grassow/Weiss - insights
Hardcore meditative space music, ala early tangerine dream and steve roach. love this stuff.

Becuzzi/Orsi - Muddy Speaking Ghosts
The Italians are at the 'cutting edge' of underground drone, and these two have made quite a strange effort here. Samples of Alan Lomax recordings abound on this one. Dusty old blues voices mixed with the fuzzy drones was a damn good idea. For an Italian ambient album it sure smacks of pure old americana.

Fountain, the OST
Are soundtracks allowed on our end of year lists? this one is special. Clint Mansell, Kronos Quarted, and Mogwai! Best soundtrack since either blade runner or solaris.

Field - From here we Go Sublime
Looking forward to revisiting this one again.

Baroness - Red Album
ditto as above

Stars Of The Lid and their Refinement of the Decline. a gorgeous, gentle, sleepy album that everyone should have.

Akron/Family
S/T, Meek Warrior, Love Is Simple, Angels of Light split

This shit is goood. I never listened to them because, for some reason, I had it in my head that they were supposed to be like a lesser Animal Collective. nope.

Yeah, Akron/Family is some strong shit.

Revisiting Burial in anticipation for the new record. From the short samples on Boomkat alone, Untrue is looking to be really great.

Actually, I'm doing a halloween show with my friend this Tuesday - here are my choice of songs:

1. Burial - "Distant Lights"
2. Sunn O))) - "Sin Nanna"
3. Electric Wizard - "Vinum Sabbathi"
4. Harvey Milk - "I've Got A Love"
5. Pig Destroyer - "Phantom Limb"
6. Glenn Branca - "Structure"
7. Tore Elgarøy - "Spooky Mind"

Now here's to hoping my other-radio-half picks some nice tracks (and also finds a reasonable sequence - lately he's been randomizing them).

I needed me a copy of Stoney End. You can keep the rest of it, but that's a great tune. In fact, I think I'm gonna build a mix around it. If you're lucky, the mix will have Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" too!!! tongue.gif

The Police - Message in a Box
Occasionally I forget what a great band they were, until I put something on. Been listening to the first two albums and a bunch of early demos, live recordings, etc. Andy's playing and solo in "So Lonely" is really amazing - guy's an effing monster.

Also, I realized that I despise reggae for the most part, except when appropriated by bands like The Police, The Clash, Ween.
