Bluebird Blues
Picked this up, used, at the Jazz Record Mart. It's a really nice compilation of Bluebird sides from the '30s/40s. Blind Wille McTell, Sleepy John Estes, Arthur Crudup etc.

Everyone was in a bad mood in my house this weekend, so I played this about 8 times in a row, both to make myself feel better and to further piss off everyone else. It worked nicely.

Over the years, I've ended up playing Klaus Nomi a lot in the run-up to Christmas.

I know close to nothing about them, downloaded this on a whim after enjoying all of their songs on The Darjeeling Limited Soundtrack. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society

Just got back from Africa which would be really depressing if I weren't heading out for the gig of the century in a few hours.

Playing these in preparation....

for ideas on the Kinks check this out:

http://soundopinions.org/forum/index.php?s...st&p=235317

you cannot go wrong with Face to Face, Something Else, Village Green Arthur, Muswell Hillbillies or Lola, in my opinion. The compilation Kinks Kronikles is very good. I'm not sure what's on the comp you have, but I pretty much dig everything they did until the 1972 or so. I also dig a lot of their late 70's and 80's material, despite some significant flaws in it.

I really like it. The twee thing is in overdrive again, but in this case, it's not so bad because the songs are so much stronger, and the band's in and out in barely 26 minutes.

Rage Against the Machine's "Down Rodeo". Forgot how much I like this track.

"So now I'm rollin' down Rodeo with a shotgun/
These people ain't seen a brown-skinned man since their grandparent's bought one

It's actually kind of a cheesy lyric, now that I've typed it. Still, I always crinkle my face and play air guitar to Morello's stabby guitar part right after this is sung.

Miles Davis - On The Corner

Here's a recording of my band playing a groove from this record:

Groove from On the Corner

Note: this is my first go with divShare, and when I listened to the upload last night--from their site--it sounded noticably worse (more muffled, to say the least) than this track does on either my home stereo or even my iMac, playing it through iTunes. I would expect there would be some difference, but the difference I heard was pretty harsh. Too bad, because this was actually a good live recording for 1996.

The Kinks ~ Lola Vs. Powerman & The Moneygoround

i picked this record up used last weekend and have been listening to it ever since. such a great, melancholy record in places, with songs like "Get Back In Line," "Strangers" and "A Long Way From Home." there are also quite a few rockers and it doesn't get much more sublime than "Lola" and the "Land of 1000 Dances" instrumental part of "Top of the Pops." i'm not sure how "Lola" fits in with the concept of the record, but who cares. it's my 2nd favorite Kinks album behind VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY.

thanks again, El C, for the mix box set to start it all...

God Save the Kinks. This record is one that some fans cite as the first with some filler and the beginning of their downward spiral. Personally, I don't agree. I think it's wonderful. Apeman is one of my favorite singalong tracks, and the way Ray enunciates "cocounut" just makes me swoon. That said, my 3 favorite tracks are the 3 you mentioned first above.

and you're welcome for the box. It was, as Ray might say, a "labour of love".
