Dread

Elbow - Leaders of the Free World

Doves - Some Cities

Aster - Some Things Seldom Heard Of

Grabbed the last one off of Kokoro. It was okay. I hadn't listened to the other two for quite awhile, so it was time to give 'em a spin. I remember getting a bit tired of both of them at some point, but listening to them now was pretty good. Looking forward to the new Elbow in a couple months.

The Fall - Grotesque
This has a great, gritty cover (I found a decent vinyl copy), but I can't find a decent sized one on the internet, unfortunately.

Box - Studio 1
I'd upload this, but since I'm sans-computer right now I'm not able. It's a fuckin' great album, the first listen blew me away. Pretty visceral listening, but also features a lot of well-timed restraint. It's a group of 4 who were brought together for a couple days of improvisation by film maker, Philip Mullarkey, to perform for his art/film project. The members are as follows:
Raoul Björkenheim, guitar (Scorch Trio)
Trevor Dunn, bass (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, John Zorn)
Ståle Storløkken, keyboards (Supersilent, Humcrush)
Morgan Ågren, drums (Mats / Morgan, Zappa´s Universe)
Ennui

My record came in the mail today. I'm hearing a big diff between vinyl and mp3 on this one, and it's just making the thing better. It's a great album through and through, the length of the album is a good thing and really allowed for them to experiment. The entire thing is like an album plus an EP. Big fan of the first half where they rock out.

The Replacements - Tim
The Saints - (I'm Stranded)

Both of these albums are just amazing. I hadn't listened to Tim in years - kicked my ass.

I think the Truckers are my favorite band, that I don't really have a favorite album by. Honestly it's usually just whatever album I am listening to at the time.

Oh hell yeah, they're awesome. That one especially. Jump Boys, Jimmy Jimmy, Girls Don't Like It, really this band deserves the same amount of underground accolades that the Buzzcocks get in terms of pop punk singles.

That's right. Good new album by a hugely underrated band. It gets bonus points for "Where's the Butterknife", a song about the legendary incident when a dude from Vancouver punk band Death Sentence stapled his scrotum to a park bench.

I think I might check this out. A lot of people are talking about how good it is.

np:

The Teenagers - Reality Check

Saw the show last night at Sonotheque. Not bad, but I guess they got their gear stolen a couple days ago and were playing loaned guitars. The sound wasn't that great, their show at fabchannel.com sounded tons better. Pretty decent album though, just begging to get remixed.

You guys really need to get in on that 3/24 Empty Bottle show. I saw them at LSA about 3 years ago, and they tore the place up, almost literally. They are absolutely insane live.

And now for something completely different...

Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream Of Trains
Robyn Hitchcock - Eye

I forget how much I love Robyn Hitchcock, until I start playing his music. This was my sturdy college rock music, getting me through the long nights of grad school. Some of my favorite songs by anybody are on these: "I Used To Say I Love You", "Flavour of Night", "Heart Full of Leaves", "Linctus House", "Raining Twilight Coast", "Glass Hotel". These are the reissued versions that YepRoc put out last fall. The previously unissued bonus tracks are surprisingly strong.

That's still my favorite Hitchcock album. It showcases the many modes of Robyn - silly, esoteric, moody, introspective...
A couple other favorite tracks are "I Often Dream Of Trains", "This Could Be The Day" and "My Favorite Buildings".

Robert Wyatt - Comicopera
I have been meaning to get this for months - and just today my LP arrived. Looks beautiful and the 3 segments of the record makes it perfect for the format. I really enjoyed my first listening of it - looking forward to spin it again later tonight.

Box - Studio 1
Seriously. Great record that I hope a few people listen to. I'm at work right now and I'm hoping to rip/upload the record for you guys. If you're into some harsh improv (twisting, screaming rock guitars, buzzing/pulsating electronics, and pummeling drums) along with moments of restrained elegance - you can dig it.

Look for this spot for a download link shortly.
