I missed out on this one when it came out. I really like it so far, have been listening to it for a few days non stop. If you like Eno's more mellow pop ambient projects (like before and after science), you'll probably like this one.

also spinning the new Gregg Kowalsky from Kranky (through the cardial window). I can't find an image to post for it though. He's the latest addition to Kranky's roster, and it's pretty much what you can come to expect from them; good quality experimental drone music.

Mine's white. Yeah, I don't think it's meant to be turned too loud, the speaker is small. I enjoy the lo- fi quality of the speaker, actually. It sounds fuzzy when you turn it up, like a worn out record or something.

"Flip Ya Lid" is supremely doin' it for me. George Evelyn and producer/keyboardist Robin Taylor-Firth really know their sounds, and Ricky Rankin's voice is perfectly laid back for the post-reggae club sound you're lookin' for. Fuckin' groovy.

Arctic Hysteria

Arctic hysteria is a phenomenon that occurs in the dead of winter, primarily to women. The weeks of darkness and general sensory deprivation lead to the eventual temporary loss of a firm touch with reality.

Darkness prevailed everywhere. Beside her igloo, a woman sat in the windsinging softly to herself while beating the snow from her husband's seal fur clothing. Her voice and mind drifted with the soft tones of the nearby kooa player. Her song was about her work, but her unfocused eyes revealed a growing distance. The darkness seemed to confine her, and the singing voice seemed not to be her own.

The realization struck! "I am dead, or at least the others believe I am",she thought. Already she hears the pounding of the tribe's hands packing down the snow on her icy grave as they sing their song of farewell. The rhythm of death sounds in her ears.

She feels cold no more as her worst fears are realized. She has been sentto the "Land of the Crestfallen", where only the spirits of poor hunters and badly tatooed women spent eternity snapping at butterflies. But wait! Even worse! Instead of butterflies, the dreaded Arctic locust swarmed into the evening air devouring all in their path.

The men in the tribe had become aware of the woman's hysterical sufferingand joined in a circle to sing a chant of releasement. "Chukaroq, chukaroq, chukaroq, ei", they sang, until finally the woman once again returned to beating the snow mindlessly from her husbands clothing, virtually unaware of what had happened as her song of work faded into the wind.

Yeah, I certainly don't play it as often as Meet The Residents or The Third Reich & Roll. It's a record that only really works when you devote every single bit of your attention to it. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of fucked up background noise. And who wants that? Not I. And didn't it take them something like three years to make? Sure, it might be a bunch of wind noises and chanting, but, damnit, the Residents put three years of time and effort into those wind noises and chanting. See, the Residents took artsy dicking-around to a whole new level and turned it into something that could be interesting and rewarding. What an excellent feat. What an excellent band. Sometimes.

Eskimo is great. My favorite Residents records are probably Mark of the Mole, Duck Stab and Freak Show. Speaking of, didn't they release some remasters recently?
Pavement Ist Rad
There are a bunch of (sort of) fancy EuroRalph remasters (I have some of those) and some (sort of) fancy RalphAmerica remasters (I have a couple of those, too) that all came out in the past two years or so. It's really confusing trying to figure out which ones aren't all that readily available in American record stores, which ones are, and WHY. So many Residents albums are just so confusingly Not Available. Go into your local Virgin Megastore and you will find beautifully packaged versions of:

The Third Reich & Roll
The Commercial Album
The Tunes of Two Cities/The Big Bubble
Mark of the Mole/Intermission

Search on Amazon or Half.com and you will find EuroRalph reissues of:

Meet The Residents
Not Available
Duck Stab/Buster & Glen
Eskimo
God In 3 Persons

Why they reissue certain albums in America and others not, I have no idea. Why they haven't reissued Fingerprince, I also have no idea. What a strange band.
