As much as I love Deacon Blues, it is only my third favorite song on Aja, after Aja and Black Cow. That's the primary reason it didn't make my singles list, although it was on the bubble.
The first side of Aja -- Black Cow/Aja/Deacon Blues -- could very well be my favorite album side, period.

I'll bite, though I already have a negative bias towards Prince....
Yep, and this is why. I can't get past the drum machines and cheesy synths. I don't doubt that the guy is talented or whatever, but I've never liked that 80s sound. Had this song been written and produced in any other decade, I probably would've loved it. Sorry

"Raspberry Beret" is the only Prince song that I HATE.
To my knowledge I've never ever heard a Steely Dan song. That will change in about 2 minutes. I have to say I'm looking forward to it.

Ah, length. There's something that plays a major role in my enjoyment of Steely Dan albums. It's a reason why the songs on Countdown To Ecstasy and Aja work together to please me moreso than, say, those on Katy Lied. They can churn out fantastic three-minute pop songs, sure, but when they really allow their songs to stretch out and breathe a little, that's when they become most impressive. The great thing about Steely Dan is that, at their very best, they were album-rock in the most 70s sense of the word, yet they simultaneously managed to be one of the more unfuckwittable singles bands in the land.
Let's not forget that Steely Dan invented Dorm-Rock.
And, of course, individual microphone equalization is frowned upon....

"Purple Rain" and "I Would Die 4 U" are probably his biggest nods towards the "80s sound". Pretty much everything else he did around this era sounds like NO ONE else (except anything else he wrote/produced, like Sheena Easton, Appolonia 6, etc.)

Steely Dan are absolute masters of studio perfection. Every note is right where it should be and is played just how it should be played, and there are still hooks galore. Always had endless respect for these guys.

Possibly my favorite thing about "Deacon Blues" is how subtle it is with its length. The first time I put it on a mix I was totally shocked that it was seven and a half minutes long--so smooth and well-structured that I thought it was four, five minutes tops.
I think most people heard it that way, because the 45 was something like 6:40 (they only cut the first half of the sax solo), and it was still on Top 40 radio about twice an hour in the spring of '78. And every time it was played, it seemed over in no time.

We all know, don't we, that the liner notes to
Can't Buy a Thrill, Katy Lied, and
