I don't get it

THE END of the countdown.

Sorry, I just have nothing else to contribute right now but I wanted to post in the thread again, if only to acknowledge that, while I didn't contribute to it, I did read it and appreciate it.
The Good Dr Bill

I really can't imagine the kind of person who would dislike any of the songs in our top five.

(hi Slackmo)

I only dislike 5 of the top 10, so I'm coming along nicely.

And I only dislike 4 of them (2 of the top 5, though). Glad to see Talking Heads in the #2 slot, for sure.

Thanks GDB!

I only dislike one of the top five.

the rest of them are either pretty much written by the same band or is 'Once In A Lifetime" which is unfuckwithable.

I don't like "Blue Monday," really.

EDIT: Or "Love Will Tear Us Apart." This song does nothing for me. All Joy Division songs sound really ugly.
The Good Dr Bill
I'd like LWTUA a lot more if it didn't have such a weak chorus. The rest of the song is pretty amazing.

I only checked this thread every so often since I didn't submit a list but I wanted to say GOOD JOB Dr Bill. Once again you've gone above and beyond. smile.gif

I feel personally responsible for "Born To Run" failing to come in at #1. Had I voted, it would have been my #1 and none of the other tunes in the top 5 would have been on my list.

Sorry, elc. I failed you. sad.gif wink.gif

Oh, and you're welcome, Slackmo! laugh.gif

If it makes you feel any better, it still would only have been second to that one song that I'll never really understand the appeal of.

I don't like "Blue Monday," really.

EDIT: Or "Love Will Tear Us Apart." This song does nothing for me. All Joy Division songs sound really ugly.

That's the point. It is ugly music by ugly people from an ugly place (both emotionally and physically). Love it. Kinda gutted that one of my top 10 ended up #357 or whatever, but it was to be expected, I suppose.

I'd like LWTUA a lot more if it didn't have such a weak chorus. The rest of the song is pretty amazing.

Was wondering why you think the chorus is weak. I love it, and think it works really well. It's not an anthemic deal, but it's the anti-pop song I suppose. I used to love JoyDiv so much, but have kinda soured on them a bit (still much prefer them to NO though). That song stands the test of time for me.

And thanks for investing your time in this: to both GDB and everyone who put thought into their lists. I know I spent far too much time on mine than was reasonable. But who ever said music love was reasonable?

The fact that Better Things failed to make the 250 is proof that people just assumed the Kinks were incapable of producing great music at this stage in their career. It's really one of their best songs ever.

"(Keep Feeling) Fascination" is definitely the best one, yeah. I actually like "Open Your Heart" more than "Don't You Want Me" and "Love Action," but that's an entirely different matter.

Eh, "Keep Feeling Fascination" loses points for me for that annoying bubbly ambulance siren synth riff.

Also, it just baffles me that people so consistantly vote "When Doves Cry" the best Prince song. It's a very good song, but I've never believed it's head and shoulders above his 30 other great songs.

Really, it really squeaks by on its funk instrumental jam, not on the song itself. 2 very simplistic verses which really don't make much sense of anything, and a chorus. What about that vocal noise at the front that sounds a chipmunk vomiting? A weird friggin' tune, all told. That really isgenius.

my blasphemous excuse for excluding it is that i heard the fountains of wayne version first. and i've never been able to really enjoy the kinks' because i know there's a better version of the song elsewhere.

1. Nick Lowe has never been an angry young man. Nick Lowe is happy.
2. After twenty-some years of trying to like it, or at least see the appeal of it, I've officially put "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in the "I don't get it" file for good.
3. As always, A-plus for Dr. Bill. Bravissimo!

citizen otm on all 3 counts. I'll add that while Joe Jackson definitely got lumped into the angry young man group with his debut record, one of the 2 singles that made the top 100 "Steppin' Out" was about as far from angry as one can get and the other, great as it is, was more of a novelty than a real angry young man song.

I realy don't get why "Steppin' Out" did so well. ISRGOWH is much, much better.

agreed on that one. I never really got why it was even a hit single. It was kinda just there - not even one of the better tracks from that album, imo.

I realy don't get why "Steppin' Out" did so well. ISRGOWH is much, much better.

agreed on that one. I never really got why it was even a hit single. It was kinda just there - not even one of the better tracks from that album, imo.

Hey ElC... that's the first thanks I've ever seen directed to BMG [in your sig]!

if station to station and power, corruption and lies break the top 10, i will be the happiest man on the somb.
