This album is threadworthy.

I wish I could sum it up better, but I'm no music critic. Suffice it to say, I think it's her best solo effort yet. Very rich, combining blues and country and rock for what I feel is a very unique effect. Beautiful vocals. Definitely some dittys from the Sadies boys. Very nice.
Saskadelphia
Yeah, it's her best. Does take a while to sink in, though. Love the cover of "John Saw That Number" with Kelly Hogan.

Are you sure the Sadies play on the album?

That Sadies extravaganza up in Toronto this week is gonna be wild.

I'm not sure of anything. But it sounds like them

Like all Neko threads, can we derail this one into a discussion of whether or not she's hot? I say she is dammit.

(And from just the few tracks I've heard so far, I agree -- this album is going to be fantastic.)
solace
i'd have to say i still prefer Blacklisted to this, and maybe even Furnace slightly, but it is fantastic, no doubt.

and yeah the Sadies do play on some tracks i think. Garth Hudson of the band, and John & Joey from Calexico are all on the first track as well. Rachel from Visqueen guests too.

I love Blacklisted.

I'm sad she may be leaving the New Pornographers (if she hasn't left already) b/c I like her stuff there a lot too.

Acknowledging Neko's supreme hotness.

Okay, now back to the music.

I'm glad Rachel Flotard's joined Neko's band...Visqueen has been a personal fave of mine for the past few years, and she has a phenomenal voice.

i can't stop playing fox confessor. i agree, it's her best one yet.
DrJimmy
i'm also thinking this is better than Blacklisted.
solace
not what you said the other night yo tongue.gif

i think in time i might feel that way, but for now after 4-5 listens i'm not quite blown away by it overall as much as i was w/ Blacklisted at first.

it is totally fabulous though, and worth the 4 year wait.

it has grown on me. Blacklisted didn't grow like this.

ah, right on wink.gif

my fave tracks are def Star Witness, Maybe Sparrow, Dirty Knife, and Margaret vs. Pauline

Blacklisted > The Virginian > Furnace Room Lullaby

If this is better than Blacklisted, I'll be thrilled.

I like the new album cover.

why is it that everyone creams over Neko and her music except for me and yella? I always get real excited to hear each release and am always undewhelmed. I'm hoping the new one will be the one that helps me "get" her.
solace
doubt it will be "the one" EC, to be perfectly honest.
if it is, i'll have to wonder why you didn't like Blacklisted wink.gif

do you like Loretta Lynn? specifically older stuff? that's who Neko reminds me of most i think. she's sorta like the male version of M. Ward for me, her sound is sorta timeless

Blacklisted was alright. Just nowhere near being a fav of mine. Probably a 7.9 or an 8.0. As far as countryish albums by females go, I'd take Van Lear Rose, about any Lucinda or Gillian record, several Rosanne Cash records, etc. etc. over that one. I got Furnace Room from the library and taped it (didn't have a burner back then), I think I might like it a little more than Blacklisted actually.

EDIT: she reminds me more of Patsy Cline, who I like, but can't get all excited about either.
Saskadelphia
Her songwriting improves with each record. She's got a knack for enigmatic, moody lyrics.
solace
i'd def agree w/ that

I have a Neko Case album Blacklisted, I believe. This album kicks ass.

What's the story on this chick? Does she play that haunting guitar? Does she write the songs.

FROM NEKO:

OCT. 26TH 2004.............HELLO EVERYBODY! THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY WEB SITE. IT'S TAKEN ME A VERY LONG TIME TO GET IT TOGETHER AND GET IT RUNNING. RIGHT NOW IS A VERY BUSY TIME. I JUST FINISHED "THE TIGERS HAVE SPOKEN" WITH THE LOVELY SADIES, AND I AM NOW WORKING ON THE FOLLOW UP STUDIO ALBUM. IT'S GOING PRETTY GOOD. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CALL IT YET THOUGH. ALL THE USUAL FOLKS HAVE COME BY THE STUDIO , AND SOME NEW ONES TOO.

ANYWAY,TODAY IS A VERY SAD DAY, THE NEWS ANNOUNCED THAT THE GREAT UK BBC DJ JOHN PEEL PASSED AWAY YESTERDAY FROM A HEART ATTACK. IT'S QUITE A BLOW, SOME THINGS IN THIS WORLD YOU JUST FEEL LIKE YOU CAN TAKE FOR GRANTED, HE SEEMED A CONSTANT CHAMPION FORCE, AND I FELT BETTER KNOWING HE WAS THERE. HE WAS A GREAT TASTE-MAKER OF MUSIC, MUSIC YOU MAY NEVER HAVE HEARD WERE IT NOT FOR HIM. IF YOU ARE CHECKING THIS WEBSITE FROM THE UK, HE IS MOST LIKELY THE REASON YOU EVEN KNOW WHO I AM. I SURE AM GRATEFUL FOR THAT. I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE SOMEONE FILLING HIS SHOES, BUT ON THE POSITIVE SIDE, HE INFLUENCED SO MANY PEOPLE, SURELY SOME KIND , UNSELFISH, HOME-MADE MUSIC DOCTOR WILL COME AND CONTINUE TO LEAD THE ROCK NERDS OUT OF COMMERCIAL DARKNESS AND INTO AUTO-TUNELESS LIGHT. BLESS YOU JOHN PEEL.

THIS WEB-SITE IS GOING TO SEEM A BIT INFORMAL. THERE WILL BE MUCH TO CONFUSE YOU. THERE WILL BE OLD TOUR DIARIES, STRUNG TOGETHER WITH NO RHYME OF REASON. LISTS OF THINGS I WANT YOU TO EAT. I LOVE TO EAT. THINGS I JUST GET SO EXCITED ABOUT I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO TELL YOU THE MOST TRIVIAL DETAILS ABOUT THEM. BLURRY AMATEUR PHOTO'S ( MOSTLY MY FAULT, AND I'LL TRY TO KEEP THE ONES OF MY DOG TO A MINIMUM ) AND HOPEFULLY ( BECAUSE I HAVE SOME SMART COMPUTER SAVVY FRIENDS HELPING ME..) SOME REGULAR WEB-SITE STUFF TOO. YOU KNOW, STREAMABLE MUSIC, STUFF TO BUY , TOUR DATE AND THE LIKE. SO AGAIN , THANK YOU FOR COMING OVER ! AND TODAY, AS A TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT FRIEND OF MUSIC, MR. JOHN PEEL, LET'S ALL LEAVE THE HOUSE, GO DOWN TO THE RECORD STORE AND BUY SOMETHING UNUSUAL THAT WE MAY HAVE NEVER CHECKED OUT BEFORE AND GIVE IT A CHANCE ! AMEN !

SEPT 11TH 2004.............EMERGENCY! WE ONLY HAVE UNTIL SEPT. 14TH!!!!!

HELLO EVERYBODY! IT'S NEKO, THANK YOU FOR CHECKING ME OUT ON THIS WEBSITE. I MUST CONFESS I RARELY EMAIL, LET ALONE GO ONLINE, BUT I WANTED TO ASK YOU FOLKS FOR A BIG FAVOR. IT'S A BIT OF AN EMERGENCY.

I GREW UP IN WASHINGTON STATE, WHICH I LOVE WITH ALL MY HEART. I LOVE THE WEATHER, I LOVE THE KIND PEOPLE AND MOST OF ALL I LOVE THE BIRDS AND THE DEER AND THE TREES AND THE MOUNTAINS. YOU MAY NOT KNOW THIS BUT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION IS TRYING TO TAKE 30% OF OUR NATIONAL FORESTS, NOT JUST IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON BUT EVERYWHERE. THEY ARE TO BE USED FOR LOGGING, MINING AND OIL DRILLING.

I AM NO SCIENTIST OR ECOLOGIST, BUT I DID WATCH MOST OF THE FOREST I REMEMBER FROM BEING A KID DISAPPEAR IN THE SHORT SPAN OF ABOUT 12 YEARS. IT BREAKS MY HEART. NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OF SUCH BEAUTY AND THE ONGOING, NEEDLESS EXTINCTION OF WILDLIFE, BUT BECAUSE WE AS A COUNTRY ARE MUCH TOO SMART TO LET THIS GO ON. WE NEED TO FIND NEW WAYS TO FUEL OUR CARS, MAKE OUR ELECTRICITY -- AND STOP POISONING THINGS TO DO IT.

SCIENCE IS SO WONDERFUL! SOUND ENGINEERING SCIENTISTS HAVE EVEN MADE MADONNA SING IN KEY!!! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! I LOVE "RAY OF LIGHT"!  IT MAKES ME DANCE IN MY UNDERWEAR!!!! THINK OF HOW HARD YOU'D DANCE IN YOUR UNDERWEAR IF WE FOUND A WAY TO STOP RELYING ON EXPENSIVE, DESTRUCTIVE OIL!! EVERYONE COULD SLEEP A LITTLE BETTER AT NIGHT. (AND NOT JUST IN THE UNITED STATES).

I REALLY LOVE OUR COUNTRY AND NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, I CAN'T HELP BUT HAVE FAITH THAT THINGS WILL GET BETTER AND MAYBE SOON WE CAN START USING OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS TOWARD GOOD, CONSTRUCTIVE PROGRESS, NOT JUST FOR OURSELVES, BUT FOR THE WORLD. EVEN IF THAT MEANS SOMETHING AS SMALL AS SENDING AN EMAIL TO TELL OUR GOVERNMENT THAT WE WANT TO KEEP OUR FORESTS JUST THE WAY THEY ARE.

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE WEBSITE THAT TALKS ABOUT THIS ISSUE - http://www.ourforests.org . I'M NOT QUALIFIED, BUT THEY CAN EXPLAIN IT BETTER AND HELP YOU OUT. PLEASE ACT SOON (WE ONLY HAVE UNTIL SEPT. 14TH!) AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS. YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID, AND SO WILL SPOTTED OWLS AND TIMBERWOLVES AND BLACKBEARS. YOUR KIDS WILL BE GLAD TOO.

I HATE TO HARP, BUT DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!!! IT IS SO IMPORTANT. EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING TO VOTE FOR GEORGE BUSH, MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU WITH MY MOST SINCERE RESPECT. JUST VOTE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

LOVE NEKO

P.S. HEY, I FORGOT TO ADD THAT MY VISIT TO THE 'OUR FORESTS' WEBSITE WAS SUPER EASY, IT TOOK TWO MINUTES TO PROTEST. LOVE NEKO

See, I think she's a pain in the ass to see live. She is charming but alot of it comes from playing off the other band mates she always has with her. That stopping a song right in the middle because her stupid guitar is out of tune is just plain rude. It's a live show, for chrissakes.
solace
yeah she can definitely be a perfectionist, thankfully she's not done that any of the times i've seen her, but i've heard plenty of stories to know it must be true.
biggie mcsmalls
Could someone please post the album? The link in the releases thread is down.

Thanks.
Uncle Remus
The thing about her stopping the show for imperfections is sort of bullshit, because it indicates that Missy doesn't take any time BEFORE the show to bother with that shit.

This is really the only thing I'll say negative about her.
solace
that doesn't really have much to do with it honestly. i'm sure she soundchecks just fine, but she's like Damon Gough when it comes to the actual live performance, if it's not going totally their way they stop the show and take it out on the sound person (and sometimes in Damon's case, audience).

the worst person i've ever seen in my life who does that shit is Jamie (formerly of The Stereo/Impossibles), he's got so much talent but the guy is such a douchebag live, it's not a surprise why his projects always sorta die prematurely.
Some Girl
I adore Blacklisted. I still think its the best. Who cares if she's a bitch, that's probably part of what lead to her success. Smart, bitchy talented women go far.

Supreme hotness? This picture and those black and whites by the pool table always come up when guys talk about her looks. Sorry guys, but those pictures are edited, and showcase Neko from certain flattering angles. Men are blindsided by the red hair (which is dyed btw) and her laying her tits out for all to see.
Let's get this straight:
The pic Sask linked is not hot, and is offensively tacky in clothing choice. Her face looks old. She has a reversed- pear figure. She has no toning, all flab, saggy tits, dry dyed hair, bags under her eyes.

Witness: Neko in Esquire (airbrushed, face half- covered):

Doesn't matter, obviously. Her voice is Godly. But I don't admire her for all the tacky photo ops.
solace
i still find her quite attractive in those pics (last one especially), sorry
i realize those Kutie pics are touched up, etc., so what smile.gif

she's not the most gorgeous girl ever, but i see plenty of girls saying Jack White is "hot", and i'd have to argue quite the contrary (could say the same for numerous rock stars). it's the combination of musician + looks for both guys and girls imo. yes she did look better and have a nicer body 4-5 years ago, she's getting up there in age biggrin.gif Jenny Lewis is definitely hotter, but let's see how she looks when she's Neko's age (Jenny is a few months younger than myself)

let's see your pics? tongue.gif
Some Girl
I'm not one to normally judge looks, like I said her talent matters most, but I feel like you guys are going off wrong impressions. And I would never let Esquire edit me to death. Or pose in a tacky see through shirt.

How old is Neko anyway? I have a different idea of aging well. In my opinion she has let herself go. My mom is 53 and looks 10 years younger than Neko.
solace
so if she lets a photographer/mag edit her to death she sucks? but if she poses without much makeup in a thin white undershirt she also sucks?

dry.gif

i've seen her live plenty of times in the last 5 years to know that i find her to be quite a striking presence in person. true beauty is a lot more than facial looks and a good body, i just happen to think she's got a bit of everything.

in some bad photos, sure, but i've never saw her in person (granted i haven't seen her in person since '03) and thought she looked "worn". as for toned, that's a lifestyle choice, can't really fault her for that imo. but life on the road and in smokey bars definitely doesn't help aging either.
Undercooked Sausage
Neko in obviously edited photographs > neko up close >= Neko in normal photos.

When I saw her at the metro, me and yancy basically joked about her the whole time. She ain't the pretty flower in the pumpkin patch no matter how I look at it.
