So we're planning on getting 'net access at the apartment again, mostly because stealing wifi from our neighbors isn't always reliable. We had comcast cable in the past, but that wasn't so great because the cable line is split 50 ways from Sunday in our building and the signal wasn't too strong. What do you guys use and what's your satisfaction with it?

i use comcast, but i also have a direct line inside, so i don't deal with the weak connection that you might with so many splits. apart from the outrageous price, i have had no real problems with it. although, i have noticed that it goes out sporadically in the early morning and during the day, but i'm usually asleep or at work then, so i'm unaffected by those drops.
Hips

What no magnets said ^^. Before that I had Earthlink for many years and service was always fine, but I'd be hard-pressed to go back to DSL now. The good thing about Comcast is they offer a special price ($19/mo) in order to undercut my town's local cable/internet provider.

Have you tried using a
larger WiFi antenna? You could pick up his signar better, or pick up someone futher away.

Every time I turn on TV I see the commercial for AT&T featuring the characters from Cars. I hate the commercial but the deal
seems good.
http://att.jpdmi.com/cars/main.php?page=19Anyone use anything like this? Would the $12.99/month deal be enough for me? That would be it, right? Just $12.99 per month? I was paying $40/month with Comcast in my old apartment. I'm sure that might be a little bit faster than this but still...

We have our own internet access run by the city telecommunications department where I live, it's a bit cheaper than Time Warner.

I was living in the Bay Area in 2000-2001, and when I first ordered DSL from SBC it took -- literally -- six months to get it installed, from the day I called up and ordered the service to the day they finally came and hooked me up.
And when I finally got an install date, they gave me an eight-hour window on a weekday. So I took the day off and sat at home. And waited. And waited. And waited. Every time I called, they said it would just be a bit longer... and then nobody showed up...

The problem around 2000 was that companies were selling access they couldn't yet provide, and then couldn't handle the overwhelming customer interest...

I don't know where mine comes from, but it's great!
We haven't figured out whether we're piggybacking somebody or the HOA has a network set up for the residents of our complex. After asking around, there seems to be a 50/50 split of folks who have their own connection and those like us, using the mystery signal. It's as strong as signals get and has never crapped out on me. I don't want to ask the HOA directly (and somehow fuck up a good thing), but we can't find information anywhere that would indicate they're offering up free wi-fi...
I don't know dick about this stuff...anybody have insight?

i have charter which is what pretty much everyone seems to have around here. it's worked fine for me, can't remember any downtime in the year i've had it, but the guy they sent over to set up my connection told me that the modems they rent out kind of suck or something. i don't really know what that means, but i thought it was funny that the guy told me all about his awesome internet that wasn't supplied by the company he works for. also, i have no idea if charter is even something you guys have in chicago.

but i'm going to try out rcn, i think. 40 dollars a month for cable and internet, seems like a good deal. only it's availability is really off. i know it isn't available anywhere in the lincoln square area. hopefully ill have better luck in ravenswood.

RCN for almost 3 years and I've rarely had any issues.
I used them in a few apartments with cable/internet/phone bundles and it was always really cheap. Never had any service issues, but their billing was screwy at times.
Now I think we use AT&T for internet. Rarely can I ever get right on the internet. That might be the router, though.
