Speaking of the Afghan Whigs, at the end of one of their albums, there is a guy who says, "Brother Woodrow, lead us in the closing prayer." Can anyone tell me what that is from? I mean, the name of it, what it is, and where I can find it?
Back in college 15 or 16 years ago, I had the entire thing. It was - I assume - a comedy monologue of what sounded like a drunk preacher chastizing his parishioners on Easter Sunday on a variety of topics - only showing up to church on Easter, not giving money to the church, screwing around on their spouses, etc. At the end, he says, "Brother Woodrow, lead us in the closing prayer..." I'm not sure if the line from the song is the exact one from what i heard or a re-reading of the line by someone else, but it was definitely inspired by the monologue I heard.
Does anyone have a clue what I'm referring to? I should probably post this on an Afghan Whigs board, shouldn't I?

I'd place Black Love in my favorite 15 albums ever (Gentlemen in the top 3, 1965 somewhere in the top 30). What is amazing is how little attention Congregation gets. Really, the most underrated album of the 90s.

Black Love destroys
Gentlemen (a modern classic iteself) if every concievable way.
Also, "Now You Know" is infuckingcredible. The part where it all builds to "tell-me-is-it-the-same....my sweetness....my everything"
still gives me chills even now, and I got an advance copy of the record way back in 93.

Gentlemen (#1 all-time for me)>1965 (#11 all time)>> Black Love (#25 all time)>>Congregation (not ranked, but still damn good)>>>> Up in It (not that good)

I'd have to go with Gentlemen over Black Love, but they're both great albums. The Whigs were one of the best live acts back in the day. One of the highlights for me was them doing a cover of "Under Pressure" with Harold Chichester at the Double Door. I hated that place (still do), but that was worth dealing with all the bullshit connected to that place.
Best Whigs song? "Faded" is up there, but also "Debonair", "My Curse", "Fountain and Fairfax", and "Summer's Kiss".

i'll agree that the Whigs are not the greatest when it comes to ballads. (the whole second half of Gentlemen is a snooze-fest.) But I think "Faded" is one where they got it stunningly right. Really, there's no way you can have any familiarity with the Whigs and NOT get this song.

Couldn't disagree more. Whigs have some great ballads, but Faded ain't one of them. It's a middle-of-the road
obvious glove that doesn't fit Dulli at all. It's the kind of bombastically bluesy number that Chris Cornell might come up with on an off-day - but with bad singing. I feel like I should be holding a lighter aloft when I listen to it.

No, not really. Whigs ballads are pretty amazing, such as The SLide Song, 66, Step Into the Light, My Curse....
And to me, the first half of Gentlemen may be the part that blew me away intitially, but damn the four final songs are pretty much jaw-droppingly good. So much depth is added with the I Keep Coming Back and Brother Woodrow. What I love is that the one realy positive song (or at least the one that does not tear love apart), is the one not penned by Dulli.

Yeah, I used to only really like the first five or so songs, but I started listening to the album again a few months ago and I've grown to really love the whole album. "My Curse" just tears me apart inside. Oddly enough, when I first heard the album, one of the only songs that really grabbed me (besides the first few) was "Brother Woodrow." I really love Dulli's guitar playing on the record, and I also love mellotron, and I sort of like cello. Now, a combination of all three? Let's just say I "enjoy" it. A lot. Shit. It's so cool! Remember the "instrumentals" thread from a while back? Someone should have posted that.

"Faded" is without a doubt my favorite Whigs tune. I can't believe the dissing of this track; to me it's a perfect example of what the Whigs were about except in ballad form.
I know that most people consider “Gentlemen” their masterpiece and while I do think it’s an amazing record “Black Love” is by far my favorite. That one just gets under my skin and has since the first time I heard it all those years ago. Damn, I miss that band.

Well, Faded was Dulli's attempt at making his own Purple Rain, or at least he's mentioned that's what inspired him.
In a way, you can say that it's derivative, but I still love that song. Although I prefer Summer's Kiss over it, and always felt that SK should've been the closer on that disc.
