am i the only one who thinks carcetti is the most "noble" of all the wire's characters this year?

I can take him much better in small doses. There was simply too much of him in the first episode this season, but I have liked him much more since then.

I am interested to see how the school stuff develops now that the kids are actually in school, and Bunny is going to be involoved in this storyline.

Yeah, you'll be doing little marathons and be done and wanting more before you know it.

p.s. watching omar walk down the block in his silk bathrobe was the greatest thing i ever watched on the television.

It'll be nice to see Major Crimes get its comeuppance once Marlo's excesses are exposed.
biggie mcsmalls
I am so bored with this season.

If I didn't have so much invested in the series, I would stop watching.

!!!
i've heard more good things than bad about this season...i'm surprised to hear some dissent.
Ted Falconi
So, did anyone notice that when they tore down the towers at the beginning of season 3 that they used stock footage of Cabrini Green?

My wife and I were talking about this last night. We don't get where all the praise is coming from this year.

It's moving very slowly, and all the new storylines are only tentatively tied together, at best. If I was a new viewer I would be utterly confused by what was going on and why this show was so praised.

Huge fall-off from the first three seasons.
boobs
I dont think they did. Those don't look like the whites at c-g and according to the commentary they CGI-destroyed some senior housing that closely resembled the old Baltimore housing project towers.

I think so 100%
Damo Suzuki
so i just finished watching all of season 4 of the wire. holy shit. best season ever. i think this is the best written season of the wire. maybe even better than s01.

p.s. i don't want to give too much away but stick with the show till the end. well worth the time invested.

The mayoral race may have slowed things down a little, but that's over now & I get the feeling they're laying a ton of ground work for an eventual snowball effect. I don't mind because the character development is so rich.

What was in those bags that Reynaldo threw out the window at Omar? Looked like Cheesy Poofs.

Crack Vials.

So, yeah, this got really, really great didn't it?

I take back my complaints from earlier in the season.

And well you should.

I watched both new episodes on demand & can't wait for the last one--although I'm afraid that whatever happens, there's going to be a downer of major proportions.

ps--thanks re: crack vials.

OTM. That scene at the beginning of the final episode is one of the most shocking things I've ever seen. And I'm not giving anything else away...

Help! I've been watching S2 on demand for the past week. Just finished watching the penultimate episode. . .
That is my absolute favorite word in the English language, preceded by antepenultimate.

I had been worried about the lack of McNulty time this season, but, so far, it's delivered.
Melted Cheese
So I won't post anything about the 4th season for anyone waiting for the DVDs... but for those who recently finished watching it, can we just go ahead and say that it might actually be impossible to ever create a television drama on par with The Wire?

If you're for some reason avoiding getting into this because of 'they hype' or because it 'doesn't sound like something you'd be interested in', you're stupid and you're wrong. It's excellence cannot be calculated by any current measure of calculating television excellence.

I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it but yeah, incredible season.

I watched season four continuously and think a show such as "The Wire" benefits from consecutive episode viewing. Waiting for a new episode week after week would not have drawn me into the show as watching on dvd did. I was thinking about this while re-watching the season two dvds which has changed my opinion (expressed in this thread) of that season greatly. One needs to watch a few episodes back-to-back, settle into the show's particular rhythm.

p.s. Season two is amazing. When Zig does that thing at the end and Frank takes a shift on the docks. Fuck me.
biggie mcsmalls
I really missed the police work/wire aspect of The Wire this season.

I gues they're bringing it back for another year, though.

totally agree. A lot of people look at season two as something of a weaker sister, I think because it gets away from String and Avon a little bit, but I love the whole dockworkers thing. The element of investigating guys who are, for the most part, hard working, honest people who sort of get tied up in shit for a variety of reasons adds a lot of depth. It's kind of ridiculous how much you feel connected to every character in this show, especially considering the size of the cast.
biggie mcsmalls
Cool to see The Greek again.
Oldster
Holy shit, just finished season 4. Fuck me. This is, indeed, the best show on TV, and season 4 is stunning. Just stunning. Can't imagine how they'll top it, but I've liked each season better than the last, so it's entirely possible.

"Homicide" has been my favorite TV show for the past 10 or so years -- but "The Wire" is better. Much better.

can some1 hook me up w/ a t0rr3nt for s4

I disagree with all this Wire love...clearly.
The Sheck
Season 5 is filming right now, where Season 3 focused on the analogies between the war on drugs and the war on Iraq, and season 4 was about education, Season 5 will center on the media.

Cons: The series has been shortened to 10 episodes, down from 13.
The Good Dr Bill
way too late on this, but whatever:

S1: 10.0
S2: 9.4
S3: 10.1
S4: 9.6

The VU of television

And even though 2 is probably the worst, it does have the best exchange

"He knows my name...but it is not my name."
"And I'm not even Greek."
boobs
S2 is not worst u r all haterz
The Sheck
Season Four is the best one yet. Especially the last episode.
HandBanana
Hamsterdam story arc alone is better than most series that run a decade.

Ending of season 4= fucking devistating. Oh my god. I couldn't wait for the dvds on that one, thank god for internet bootlegs. What's the word on the state date of season 5? Sept/Oct I assume?

Prez is such an underrated character. "I'm not your yo!"
Bleep Blop
btw, it's not really mentioned at all on the show; but Randy and Cheese have the same last name. Father/son?

edit: and on a completely unrelated, real life note; Omar(Michael K Williams) is Saul Williams brother?? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttt

I'd guess early next year, myself. HBO would probably already be doing some early promotion for a September air date. I believe they only started filming in April, and they traditionally like to film the whole season before airing any of it.

Probably shortly before Season 5 airs. I know Season 3 hit DVD a few weeks before Season 4 started airing.

Season 4 comes out Dec. 4.

S2 might be my favorite of the first three
BobtheSquid
S2 definitely gets a bad rap, but I thought it was pretty good, def better than S1 but not sure if it beats S3. However, S4 really trumps all. Can't wait for S5 in January. Apparently Clark Johnson (Meldrick Lewis from "Homicide") is going to be playing the Baltimore Sun city editor.

Just got Disc 1, Season 1 in the mail today.

S3 = maybe the greatest season of any TV show ever

and yeah no excuse for not doing whatever is necessary to procure S1.

Have you seen S4 yet? Because that's pretty much how I'd describe S4 (not that S3 isn't great).
The Good Dr Bill
yeah, I liked it, but
so much of the show for me was Stringer & Avon and without them the show, while still great, didn't relaly carry the emotional weight it did before. Plus, barely any McNulty.
Yeah, I hear you on that.
But I guess to me that's what was all the more impressive about it, the fact that they could lose or downgrade previously dominant characters and bring once-minor ones to the forefront. Reminds me of James Ellroy's books in that way, where some tertiary characters in one book become the protagonist in the next. And, of course, at least Omar was still around.
The Good Dr Bill
dunno about Ellroy, but yeah, I do dig how the show does that. Was thinking the other day about how Friday Night Lights'll have to deal with doing this if it lasts longer than two seasons, though it's doubtful that it will.
