am i the only one who thinks carcetti is the most "noble" of all the wire's characters this year?
I can take him much better in small doses. There was simply too much of him in the first episode this season, but I have liked him much more since then.
I am interested to see how the school stuff develops now that the kids are actually in school, and Bunny is going to be involoved in this storyline.

My wife and I were talking about this last night. We don't get where all the praise is coming from this year.
It's moving very slowly, and all the new storylines are only tentatively tied together, at best. If I was a new viewer I would be utterly confused by what was going on and why this show was so praised.
Huge fall-off from the first three seasons.

I dont think they did. Those don't look like the whites at c-g and according to the commentary they CGI-destroyed some senior housing that closely resembled the old Baltimore housing project towers.

The mayoral race may have slowed things down a little, but that's over now & I get the feeling they're laying a ton of ground work for an eventual snowball effect. I don't mind because the character development is so rich.

So I won't post anything about the 4th season for anyone waiting for the DVDs... but for those who recently finished watching it, can we just go ahead and say that it might actually be impossible to ever create a television drama on par with The Wire?
If you're for some reason avoiding getting into this because of 'they hype' or because it 'doesn't sound like something you'd be interested in', you're stupid and you're wrong. It's excellence cannot be calculated by any current measure of calculating television excellence.

I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it but yeah, incredible season.
I watched season four continuously and think a show such as "The Wire" benefits from consecutive episode viewing. Waiting for a new episode week after week would not have drawn me into the show as watching on dvd did. I was thinking about this while re-watching the season two dvds which has changed my opinion (expressed in this thread) of that season greatly. One needs to watch a few episodes back-to-back, settle into the show's particular rhythm.
p.s. Season two is amazing. When Zig does that thing at the end and Frank takes a shift on the docks. Fuck me.

totally agree. A lot of people look at season two as something of a weaker sister, I think because it gets away from String and Avon a little bit, but I love the whole dockworkers thing. The element of investigating guys who are, for the most part, hard working, honest people who sort of get tied up in shit for a variety of reasons adds a lot of depth. It's kind of ridiculous how much you feel connected to every character in this show, especially considering the size of the cast.

Season 5 is filming right now, where Season 3 focused on the analogies between the war on drugs and the war on Iraq, and season 4 was about education, Season 5 will center on the media.
Cons: The series has been shortened to 10 episodes, down from 13.

I'd guess early next year, myself. HBO would probably already be doing some early promotion for a September air date. I believe they only started filming in April, and they traditionally like to film the whole season before airing any of it.

S2 definitely gets a bad rap, but I thought it was pretty good, def better than S1 but not sure if it beats S3. However, S4 really trumps all. Can't wait for S5 in January. Apparently Clark Johnson (Meldrick Lewis from "Homicide") is going to be playing the Baltimore Sun city editor.

Yeah, I hear you on that.
But I guess to me that's what was all the more impressive about it, the fact that they could lose or downgrade previously dominant characters and bring once-minor ones to the forefront. Reminds me of James Ellroy's books in that way, where some tertiary characters in one book become the protagonist in the next. And, of course, at least Omar was still around.
