Oh man, all you people buying The Wire are in for a real treat.
theremin
if I find my $25 gift certificate before the night is up, I'm buying this.
dice
are there extras in the box that aren't in individual seasons?
no magnets
unfortunately, it's just the five complete season DVD sets all in one package. HBO is notorious for not including extras.
Hans Christian Anderson
hmm its up to $130 now in my eyes. whatever, i aint got that kinda cash anyway and have never really been about purchasing dvds.

Just watched the episode "All due respect" from Season 3 last night. The scene where McNulty and Bunk are interrogating Cheese about putting a cap in his dog might be my new favorite scene.
Mitchell
Heads up for UK SOMB's.

Finally, finally comes to terrestrial on Monday night on BBC2 at 23:20 after Newsnight. Don't forget to watch Stewart Lee's excellent Comedy Vehicle as well.

That Del Boy bit last week was pretty astonishing. Forgot to check credits for week 2 but a C Morris was involved in the writing of week 1.
Mitchell
How much did you want Richard Herring to be going "He fell through the bar Stu" though?

Yes, now you've said it, it's nagging me

Idris Elba's tenure on the Office begins tonight, my fellow Americans.
Uncle Remus
Idris Elba? Can't wait!
Wolfgang
think that happened last week, or 2 weeks ago?
Uncle Remus
I'm still stuck in February's shows, so it hasn't happened for me yet, no matter what. LoL.

Comcast has misled me once again.

Just finished the entire series tonight..ah, where to start...

A true contemporary American Masterpiece in every sense of the phrase. I don't think there has ever been a show that tries to lift up the rug and show the truly forgotten people of an inner city climate along with the everyday compromise of people who want to make a positive impact but are ultimately condemned to the margins. Easily the greatest, TRUEST television show I've ever seen in my entire life.

I think that a lot of people missed an integral part of this show, which is that there was essentially only one character of The Wire and that is Baltimore. This show was never about Avon Barksdale, Omar Little, Stringer Bell or any other single characters lives. It was about the entire movement of a people trying to rebuild a dying 3rd tier city by any means necessary.

I have absolutely no idea how anyone is going to top this.

The pinnacle of this series for me was D'Angelo's explanation of The Great Gatsby and the last conversation he had with his mother & I don't know if I will ever get over Dukie shooting up heroin in the alleyway...almost left me in shambles..
velocity
You're right about Baltimore being the central character. Awhile ago @ work a big wig from one of our insurers had been sent out to meet w/ employees and as I was getting him situated I found out he lived in Baltimore. It was like meeting someone famous, lol. Season 3 was airing at the time and I immediately started pumping him about crime statistics, has the murder rate improved, how is redevelopment going, is shipping still viable...When I eventually admitted to being addicted to the Wire (he'd heard about it but hadn't seen it) he prolly thought I was nuts.

Finals Week start tomorrow.

I am totally wrapped up in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

For some completely unfathomable reason, I decided to start re-watching this show from the beginning yesterday for the second time.

On top of that, I'm working my way through this whole thread.

I'm an idiot.

NP: Season 1: Ep 4.
Asher Ford
Finished again. Five weeks to run through the whole series. Somehow even better in this marathon mode than it was to spread it out for seven months or so. Also season five was WAY better on second viewing. New rankings for me:

1. Four
2. Three
3. One
4. Two
5. Five

What an amazing show.
Mitchell
If you haven't read it.

is a must read, especially for the dim in this thread who just didn't get it.

What is Season 2 doing down near the bottom?

But, I think i may start a rewatch of this show from the beginning.

After watching the full series, I realized the greatness of season 2. I think my initial issue with it was that it had the same sort of learning curve that the first season did (meaning it took me until about halfway through the season to have any idea of what was going on).

Still, Season 4 is the best.

I'm watching the whole series AGAIN, this time with my family. Just finished S2, realized it takes WAY longer than the others to really kick-start. I mean I was on episode 10 and still wondering when it would really get going. The payoff is great but it is a LONG-feeling season. Also Nicky's performance is way underrated because of all the distraction of Ziggy.

S3 on other hand starts up big from episode 1.
Montana
Should have ended at 4.

this man speaks some truth. nick is one of my top 5 favorite wire characters ever. that actor has a 2 scene part in vicky christina barcelona which i watched a few weeks ago. i got a big WTFareyoutalkingabout look from my girlfriend upon getting really excited that "holy shit, nicky sobotka is in this movie and for not long enough!"

as much as i enjoy the barksdales, i almost wish this show had a totally different character core (and yes that includes detectives somewhat too) every season. if the series followed that approach, folks would LOVE season 2.
Campaigner
Season 2 is my favourite. The montage at the end with Nick by the fence is my favourite scene from the whole series...
bunk
So many great scenes in this series and this has to be one of the best:

2+ seasons of Marlo acting very methodical and calm though the entire time you can tell that he is evil. And in this one scene and this one scene only, he shows his true rage. Truly great piece of acting.

voodoodaddy
I'm a big fan of s.2 & Nicky Sobotka too. Great character, great acting. Not saying it's the best but in the top 3 seasons for me.

The scene with Ziggy in the car waiting for the police sirens to arrive, realizing that his whole life has just gone down the drain is unforgettable.
killerparties
The actor who played Ziggy was so fucking good in Generation Kill.

Everyone should watch that.
velocity
He's already typecast as "obnoxious skinny guy"
Ogawa
Dude masturbates to full climax in Larry Clark's terrible Ken Park.

killerparties
I would've said pic or gtfo, so thanks for saving me the trouble.
Ogawa
You don't want to see some of the pics I could've posted from the scene.

Having just watched the series finale, I am confident in saying that The Wire is the best TV series I have ever watched. Fuck if the way Omar died wasn't the most anticlimactic way anyone could die, though.
wooooo
Oh, and also fuck Dukie. Fuck him and his lying ass. And his completely sudden and unexplainable (at least to me) loss of innocence. Fuck.

Also, I still have a hard time liking Prez after he gunbutted that kid in season one.

The boy fucking came from circumstances!
By-Tor
Prezbo redeems himself in the best way. First by working with Lester, later, and more fully-- by helping kids, by being a great teacher.
velocity
You couldn't help but wish he'd forced the issue w/ Dukie like Bunny did w/ Namond.
killerparties
Dukie's learned how to survive, not better himself.
Asher Ford
His search for survival leads to one of my favorite scenes. Poot in that shoe store; "Guess you gotta go bang a couple more years, then come back."

But yea, Dukie man, heartbreaker in the worst way.

That was fucking bullshit, I agree. He didn't deserve to get dropped by that little motherfucker. I just finished it last night and what a brilliant show. Some of the best characters I have ever seen and the stories.........amazing. I just wish there was more of it to watch. I think im gonna hit up Sopranos and watch the whole thing again now
Efrim
I actually loved the way Omar died. The fact that the one second he let his guard down, it was over. Plus, The Wire was never in the business of making legends. It was about people. Omar's death cemented his humanity for me instead of deifying him as most shows would have done.
