Geisha - Mondo Dell'OrroreOk, yeah, this is really great stuff. Thanks Burzum.
Yes, thanks. Although the Black Elk is way more to my liking. Thanks to Who That Was!
Speaking of Black Elk- can someone re-up that bad boy?

Not me. Haven't listened to it yet, actually. Gave the Geisha a spin and liked it. Reminds me of Endless Nameless by the Wildhearts, an album I will endeavour to upload in the coming days.
[edit] And listening to Barkmarket for the first time ever. It's fucking brilliant. Totally one of those 'where have you been all me life?' things. Fucking hell.

Does it have the Southern Rock-Jam Boogie organ fills like on Robot Hive/ Exodus? (to be clear, I fucking LOVED that record, but it was a surprising new direction for the band that put out the straight -out RAWK of Blast Tyrant and earlier efforts.
Do you know when this things supposed to drop legitimately, Sask?
That's definitely the direction it takes. Robot Hive had a few rockers like "Burning Beard" and "Mice and Gods", but this album is straight-up Southern boogie and soul, continuing where the second half of the last record left off. Neil Fallon continues to show more vocal range, but the new CD is all about the guitars and drums, which are really lively and (scuse the lazy word) dynamic. My favourite new tune is "When Vegans Attack", an uptempo slide guitar groover that reminds me of 70s ZZ Top and Foghat.
It's out in March.
So
Robot Hive is crunchier than
Blast Tyrant? Guess I oughtta listen to that &
Live @ the Googolplex again...they struck me as a tad sluggish but it's been awhile. I do like the guy's voice (Dusty Hill/Zappa amalgam).

For pure crunch factor,
Blast Tyrant is the way to go, but it's not completely absent on
Robot Hive. It's obvious Tim Sult is tired of that sound, because it's practically nonexistent on the new CD. Good for them, I say. I love this blues direction.
Good call on the Zappa similarity in the vocals! I never noticed that connection before, but it's undeniable, that's for sure.

Seriously. They didn't even acknowledge the record in the year and a half its been out ... and have NEVER acknowledged the band. Now, its all "8.4"! Yeah, things like this definitely make one think there's an agenda over there. You know ... the whole "they didn't put this up in 2005 because they were afraid of looking horribly uncool ... until they checked the pulse of the blogosphere/boards/Internet community and saw that certain metal/bands and subgenres are actually getting acclaim" conspiracy theory.
Whatever the case, its good to see the album get some love, certainly. Exposing indie kids to progressive Swedish death metal is never a bad thing in my book, and certainly won't affect my personal view of the band. I loved them before, I'll love them after the inevitable P-Fork backlash cycle kicks in with the next record.

Agreed. I believe one of the very first reviews of 2006 was of a little record called
Pink. Then all of a sudden, everybody was like, "I don't normally like this kind of stuff, but this fuckin' RIPS!" They must have visited the SOMB Y-S-I thread in November '05. And then they gave
Altar a 6.something, and that was like, "wtf?"
I'm just glad to have beaten a bunch of Tapes 'n' Tapes fans to the metal bandwagon.

In regards to Opeth, just be glad that they're getting the coverage and don't worry about why. It doesn't really matter. Rating should've been like 9.5 though. I wonder if Pitchfork has ever given a metal album a 9+ rating. Also, glad to see them reviewing that KTL disc. It's a good album and the review and rating are both spot-on.

Got the new Abigail Williams EP today. Quite an enjoyable CD, a combination of Gothenburg and black metal. Blackened metalcore, I guess you'd call it.

Thinking about it a little more now, this is actually possible. I somehow doubt Pitchfork is in the general pipeline to get releases from Roadrunner, unlike, say, albums they reviewed released on stalwart indie labels like Kemado (The Sword) or Matador (Early Man).
I still find it amusing that Opeth is even ON Roadrunner, even if its been a few years now.
And Burzum's right ... publicity and exposure are never bad things. The more the merrier, I say ... I wasn't trying to be all "I heard them first and want Opeth to MYSELF, damnit!" snobbish as much as I just found the "hindsight is 20/20" review/timing to be suspect. Lets hope PF continues their newfound discovery of metal into 2007.
