Yeah, I've been hearing some really good things about Middian. I loved the last YOB album, so this one has to be good.

Unreal Never Lived? Wasn't that their last one? I've never heard that, there stuff tends to be quite rare. Illusion of Motion is probably in my top 20 records of all time tbh.

But the reality is that I probably wouldn't like Neurosis recordings period, were it not for how awesome they were live.

It's impossible for me to get any distance on this, because I saw them two months after getting my first Neurosis CD. That said, I did think they were weird and a bit boring before I saw them.

Then everything changed...

P.S. Not even Enemy of the Sun?

I've only got Through Silver and the new one...

Yeah? The last one left me a bit cold (gorgeous cover aside), but I'll deffo check this out.
James D
It's damn good imo. But then again YOB mightn't be to everyone's tastes.

I'll up it later when all the footballs over otherwise it'll mess up all of my live streams. Track 3 on it is the shortest one of the CD (under 7 mins) but it's just amazing. Getting goosebumps thinking about it.

here's a little more on the Wilson/Akerfeldt thing from Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson...

PORCUPINE TREE's WILSON Talks About Side-Project Featuring OPETH Mainman - Mar. 23, 2007

PORCUPINE TREE mainman Steve Wilson recently spoke to MTV.com about his side-project with OPETH leader Mikael Åkerfeldt, which should surface sometime in 2008.

"We've been talking about this literally since the day we met," Wilson explained. "The original idea was to collaborate together on something else, but since then both bands have been becoming more and more successful. We kind of got immersed in our own projects, and we've never really found the time to get together and follow through on what we'd discussed. In the meantime, the rumors have gotten around that we were planning to do something. Realistically, it is going to happen, but it won't happen until next year. We've written some songs, and that's about as far as we've got so far.

"I just hope it can live up to [people's] expectations," he continued. "I think there's always this sense that this whole idea of supergroups is sometimes one that can disappoint, because people always expect it's going to be OPETH plus PORCUPINE TREE, so it's going to be twice as good as either band on its own. I think it will be something a bit different, and I think it will be something good. I just hope the expectations aren't too enormous."

Just wanted to add to the YOB praise, great band. The Middian album is very good too. YOB fans should also check out Unearthly Trance as well, they're very similar (to my ears anyway).
James D
Yeah, Unearthly Trance are pretty cool aswell.

I have a feeling this is going to be a good year for metal. Middian, the new Neurosis to name a few already.

I personally cannot wait for the new Baroness to be unleashed if their two previous ep's are anything to go by.
Alky 2009
Haven't had a chance to listen to either of them yet, but I made a trip to Reckless this afternoon and picked up the Dead Child EP and the Southern Lord reissue of Saint Vitus' V.

Has anyone else here heard Year of No Light? Came out late 06 in Europe, and in about six weeks in North America. Unbelievably good, like a cross between Jesu, Godflesh, and the usual NeurIsis shtick. Download "Traversee", the best song on the album:
http://yearofnolight.free.fr/mp3/03-year_o...d-traversee.mp3

Also, metalcore is beyond boring these days, but I'm still a sucker for metalcore with good hooks, and the new CD by LA's In This Moment is really, really good. Musically middling, but with a very charismatic female singer with good vocal range. They even go for a bit of an MCR crossover thing, which could potentially be cool. Download "Prayers" here:

And am I the only one who doesn't get Type O Negative? I've never been a fan of the band, and their new CD does absolutely nothing for me after sitting with it for a month.

I never cared for them. There's always been something phony or vainglorious about Peter Steele's vocals. Not sure if it's his smug /ironic vibe, but I can't listen. However, when I saw them open for Pantera it was their last night on the tour and they came out during Pantera's set and started throwing food & chairs at Darryl & Phil. Pretty funny stuff.

I used to love Type O (but I am ready to be the only one on this board; they are very Marmite). Not listened greatly to anything they released in the last decade (World Coming Down was a bit drab. And no, they're not usually drab, before anyone says that wink.gif), but I am passionate about October Rust, which I think is seriously one of the most under-rated albums of the nineties. It's sad that people are digging on Nice Metal nowadays, when that album married beefy rock with Cocteau Twins and worked way better than any of the modern attempts. Apart from that first Kayo Dot album. That was fucking thrilling.

I also really liked Bloody Kisses. I would say I'm surprised that someone into their epic, goth-tinged metal isn't feeling Type O, but I am honestly not surprised when anyone says they don't like them. It's that kind of band. I haven't heard the new one yet, but I have a good feeling about it for some reason. Terrorizer said they'd gone back a bit to the hardcore, and I actually want to buy it.

Did you ever like Pist. On, Saskadelphia?

It's definitely Steele's persona that's the biggest turn-off, I think.

Yeah, the title track is total hardcore, and is quite good, the best song on the CD. But the production is awful, in my opinion. I don't know what was going on there. It sounds way too thin for my liking.

I didn't mind the stuff from Sell Out, but I found it wound up blending in with all the nu metal that was sprouting at the time, and really didn't get any farther than the mild interest phase.

So what does everyone else think of Megadeth's re-recorded "A Tout Le Monde"? Personally, I love it. Sped up a little, some cool guest vox by Cristina, Really nicely done, I think, a good way for Mustaine to "reclaim" the song after the negative publicity surrounding the shooting in Montreal. I'll post the MP3 this afternoon if anyone's interested.

Yeah, the guy, Kimveer Gill, wrote it was one of his favourite songs before he left for Dawson College, where he opened fire, killing one and injuring 19 before killing himself. Mustaine was obviously offended that such a personal song was misinterpreted, so I see the re-recording as classy, and not commercially driven.

I'll post the mp3 right away before I turn in.

I was pretty blown away by the new album. I hadn't even listened to any of their stuff post-Burning Red*, but decided to give this one a shot. Really impressed with the massive songs and the guitar playing; it sounded to me like Robb decided to really fucking shred after spending so long trying to distance himself from the spectre of thrash. I was so impressed that I want to buy it before I listen to it again.

*Not because I didn't like it, because I really did. I just went through a phase of 'the outs' with metal from about 2001-04.

Yeah, when this album goes thrash, it cooks. It's the nu regressions that have me undecided. I'll give it some time. It's a mighty impressive comeback, though.

What a disappointment Machine Head was after their debut. That album with the Police cover on it - how awful. I'll have to check out the new one, though. MP3, not paying for it yet.

I bought the new Clutch and the production's still pretty sucky - it wasn't my MP3s, unfortunately. It still sounds like Kyuss with a clean bottom-end. That's fine for Kyuss, but I'd rather have a less muddy sound. It's growing on me, but I still like RH/E better.

Agreed; accusations of it being nu-metal are inaccurate. Ross Robinson fear: it's about as nu-metal as the first Glassjaw and last ATD-i albums. 'Desire to Fire': their best kick in. 'The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears': awesome MH pit song. Easily their most dynamic album.
James D
Yeah, i've that album. It's not bad tbh, some good songs on it as you said Through, particularly 'Blood, sweat and tears'. However I much prefer there more thrashy songs like Imperium of their last record.

I probably well be picking up their new one whenever I see it next.
ParticleHustler
Burning Red wasn't as big a disappointment as their second album was. I had such high hopes for it after the greatness of the first one that I was completely underwhelmed by the lack of hooks on the second one. BR was terrible, though - at least as I recall when I got it, since I haven't listened to it in years. The last one was decent, but I can't say I've picked that one up in a long time either. For me, I guess they were a 1-album band (kinda like CoC - Blind is the only thing of theirs that I like).

Nice insight.
James D
So I picked it up after work today. The first song in pretty incredible as a couple have said. I don't think it's going to blow me away but there are a few stellar songs on there on first listen.

I also picked up LCD's new one aswell. That thing is is just brilliant.

Got the new Middian yesterday...it hasn't grabbed me the way YOB did, but then again, most doom needs tme to grow on me. But it is a cool disc, I always like Mike S's vocals, it's a welcome change from all the grunters we get in doom bands.
James D
Cool, let me know how you find it. I need to hurry up and get that ordered.

Oh and Through, I got Through silver in blood(LOL, just realised where your username comes from) the other day. It blew me away, especially considering I've only heard their newer stuff. Thanks for that recommendation even though it was probably a no brainer.
