Just because it's the end of June and I'm trying to stay organized, here's my mid-year top 20. It's been a very, very, very good six months.
1. Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
2. Alcest - Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde
3. Jesu - Conqueror
4. Neurosis - Given to the Rising
5. Clutch - From Beale Street to Oblivion
6. Caina - Mourner
7. Machine Head - The Blackening
8. Korpiklaani - Tervaskanto
9. Watain - Sworn to the Dark
10. The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
11. Rwake - Voices of Omens
12. Bergraven - Dodsvisioner
13. Behemoth - The Apostasy
14. Bloody Panda - Pheromones
15. Dimmu Borgir- In Sorte Diaboli
16. Wold - Screech Owl
17. Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapien
18 Therion - Gothic Kabbalah
19. Hacride - Amoeba
20. 3 Inches of Blood - Fire Up the Blades
Darkest Hour and Baroness might just sneak in there, and I have very high hopes for the new Arch Enemy and Nile.

14. Bloody Panda - Pheromones
Seriously fucking good album. I had it on the PC for ages without listening because I forgot what it even was. Must have got confused with all the other 'panda' stuff out there.
Also, dilemma: Boris/Doomriders split worth £28 (56USD) to a poor boy? I'm leaning strongly towards 'no', but artwork + live 'Farewell' = hotness.

I'm on a brand new computer, so I don't know how to post images, but I've finally warmed up to Enslaved-Ruun.
This just didn't sound like a true black metal record to me. It seemed way too symphonic and melodic to me, which is why I dismissed it immediately. So, I approached it again without having put any sort of metal tag on it. I went with an open mind, and I have to say I really loved it. It seems kind of soft in a true black metal sense, but I realized these are really well written songs. I'm still not sure what to make of it as far as where it deserves to be in a genre, but i've been really surprised at how great this record is. Every song is great. I still don't think its black metal, but that's okay. Really good record.
Yeah, it's a lot proggier than your regular one-man Burzum-ish black metal (which is great, don't get me wrong)... as Sask once said, it's sort of a black metal version of Opeth (except better to drive to.) I still play
Ruun every so often. Great album.

News from Agalloch:
QUOTE
The recording for the third full-length SCULPTURED album "Embodiment" has been completed. Commenting on the finished results songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Don Anderson tells us that:
"I think this is the best work we've done. The album sounds huge even though it hasn't been mixed yet. I am really happy with how everything came together. Andy Winter's keys and Jason Walton's bass tie everything together while the guitars are allowed to explore all kinds of harmonic possibilities. There is a definite coherency to the album even though it might sometimes seem random at first. This is definitely an album for headphones."
"Embodiment" will be mixed by Paul McKee (Deserts of Traun, Tholus) at Sad Girl Music and mastered at Paramount Mastering by Bill Dooley who recently mastered the Isis album "Panopticon." Look for a release date from The End Records in the coming months.
The album cover for "Embodiment" was designed by John Haughm (Agalloch) using images borrowed with permission from The National Library of Medicine. Haughm also designed the layout for the booklet using similar imagery and the photography of Veleda Thorrson.
Color me excited.

I haven't heard any of their albums post-98, but from those early albums I can safely say no. They were pretty much DM at first, then got a bit techno metal. Their best album,
Demanufacture, was lean and mean and not only predated nu, but bore no resemblance to what nu would be. There's little bass, no concession to rap/hiphop at all... I don't see it.
Maybe they have since become nu, but I wouldn't know.

A heads up to Jesu fans. The Jesu/Eluvium split LP is now available for preorder from
Temporary Residence. Only $11 post-paid in the US!
QUOTE

For the second installment in the collaborative series of split albums between Temporary Residence Ltd. and Hydra Head Records, we find a match made in heaven with the ethereal, grandiose dirge-pop of Jesu splitting sides with stately, deserted majesty of Eluvium. Already fans of each other's music, the two artists sought to compliment each other and in the process stretched their individual sounds to their outermost limits. Jesu shoots for the moon with a trio of fuzzed-out tunes that owes more to first-wave British shoegaze groups like Swervedriver and Ride than Broadrick's own roots in Godflesh and Napalm Death. It's a beautiful and brilliant evolution in Jesu's already accomplished career. Eluvium aims for the heart of the sun with his magnum opus, a three-part collaboration with Jeremy deVine that stretches Eluvium's contemplative drones to a staggering twenty-one minutes, in which time the song transforms from a lonely rattle to a seismic, swirling storm of sound that grinds the piece to haunting quiet. As with all records in this series, this is strictly limited to 4,000 copies - 2,000 Hydra Head versions and 2,000 Temporary Residence Ltd. versions. The music and the artwork is the same on all copies, but the vinyl colors, label colors, and outer sticker colors will vary. We live to comfort you with our music, and confound you with our methods.
TRACK LISTING 1. JESU: Farewell
2. JESU: Blind & Faithless

I just got back from Seattle after seeing the Southern Lord metal extravaganza last night. It was fantastic - definitely worth the effort and dough. Quick recap:
1. Wolves in the Throne Room - I wasn't sure they could match the greatness of their recordings in a live setting. Well, they definitely can. Unfortunately, they only got 30 minutes but they definitely delivered. They played all new material (including the tune that Burzum posted) and i'm pretty sure that the new record is going to be great. Given that these guys are self-described outcasts, they surprisingly looked like normal dudes - except for the singer who looks like a minature Dimebag Darrel. All in all, it was a great set. Amazing band.
2. Weedeater - I've never heard a note from these guys, but once they started setting up their gear I knew immediately what I was in for. These dudes looked like they were straight out of a southern swamp. And that's exactly what they delivered - 40 minutes of southern fried sludge very much similar to Crowbar and Eyehategod. Each dude in the band shotgunned a beer after every song. Having never heard them, I have to say I was impressed - loud, sludgy, and thick as hell. Very cool show.
3. Earth - I'm definitely a big fan of this band, but they were slightly out of place musically here. After having my face kicked in by the preceding 2 bands, Earth nearly put the crowd to sleep. It was just too damn mellow. I will say that Dylan Carlson plays his guitar just beautifully - he's really great to watch. The Hibernaculum stuff sounded fantastic, but I couldn't help but yawn multiple times over the 45 minute set.
4. Sunn 0))) - I just love these guys. But, i've always been more of a fan of their recorded material than their live performances. I've always dug their concept in a live setting, but musically I've always thought they were a bit tedious. All that changed dramatically last night - this was by far the best show i've ever seen of them. Rather than just getting pulverized by 2 guitarists, they changed things up quite a bit last night. There were 5 people on the stage at all times. It looked like Greg Anderson was playing a standup bass for the entire show - at least that's what it looked like through all the smoke. They also had several lead singers who sang in just about every song. The singer who was on the stage the majority of the show, much to my shock, appeared to be a female. I could barely see through all the smoke, but whoever it was appeared to have long blond hair underneath her robe. They also used electronics extensively that just pummeled my ears. It could have been John Weise behind the electronics, but I couldn't tell. I barely recognized anything that they played - I guess they could have just been improvising. Regardless, they sounded incredible. Probably my favorite live set of 2007.

Thought the metal-threaders might get a kick out of this, from newcitychicago.com:
The Emperor Has No Clothes
The most potent black force enters Jamba Juice
Keith Gay
I guess the devil must be watching his weight.
Two members of the legendary Norwegian Black Metal band Emperor enter Michigan Avenue’s Jamba Juice, where I work. Vocalist Ihsahn and Axeman Samoth are both in town for a sold-out show at the Metro, and stop in for a late breakfast while taking in the city. I don’t recognize them at first, what without their corpse paint or bullet belts.
They are surprisingly polite, not at all evil or Nazis like I expected. Nor are they as tall as I thought they would be. I am a little embarrassed to be seen in my apron and hat and dorky name tag in front of the MOST POTENT BLACK FORCE THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN, but this is tempered by my surprise at finding out said potent force drinks Jamba Juice.
You see, the band rose to semi-fame in the early nineties, in part due to their pioneering work in black metal, and partly due to the arrest of several members as a result of their involvement in the infamous Black Metal Circle. The Black Metal Circle made headlines following a satanic campaign across Norway that included murder, rape and the burning of several ancient churches. Their activities culminated in one member stabbing another to death and then bragging about it on Norwegian radio, leading to the arrest of Samoth for arson, as well as the conviction of then-drummer Bard Faust for the murder of a homosexual man in a park.
Ihsahn had a Mango A Go-Go with an immunity boost. Samoth had a Strawberries Whirl, also with immunity.

Interested in some quality space rock a la Earthless? But with vocals? And really catchy songs? And the Lemmy-driven groove of "Silver Machine"? And sounding more metal than Comets on Fire? Try UK band Litmus out:
http://www.myspace.com/litmusspacerockTotally old school, nothing else. Try out "Under the Sign"...it's in edited form, as the album version is a 15 minute scorcher, but it's a great indication of what these dudes are all about.
There have been quite a few space rock albums coming out lately (Titan and Danava among others), but this one might be the best. Even better than Earthless, you might ask? Could be.

Hey, I dug that Litmus, Sask. Thanks for the link. I'll have to look for them live, sounds like fun.
