I've been listening to this album on repeat for the last week. Amazingly well done funeral doom from Germany. They supposedly spent the last 4 years making this album and it shows. RIYL Corrupted, Orthodox, etc. Really, if you like doom metal at all I can't recommend this highly enough. Check it out.

Some sad news today:
QUOTE
Drummer Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka of the Polish extreme metal band DECAPITATED passed away in a Russian hospital from injuries sustained in a recent road collision. He was 23 years old.
Vitek and DECAPITATED singer Covan (real name: Adrian Kowanek) were injured in an accident earlier in the week involving DECAPITATED's tour bus and a truck carrying wood in Gomel, on the Russia/Belarus border. Both musicians reportedly sustained serious head injuries in the collision, which is believed to have been the fault of the band's driver (although this has not yet been officially confirmed).
According to the Polish Internet portal Onet.pl, Vitek underwent trepanation, a form of surgery in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the skull, and was due to be transported to a hospital in Krakow, Poland for further treatment.
Covan's family released a statement yesterday (Thursday, November 1) that the vocalist's condition had improved. At the time, the vocalist was still said to be at a hospital in Novozybkov, Russia, where he and Vitek were taken following the accident.
He was a tremendous talent...the drumming and guitar work on Decapitated's albums is mind-boggling, and was even moreso in a live setting (saw them open for Vader two years ago). And at 23, he was still pretty much a kid.

Went and saw Enslaved last night. It was their first time ever playing here in Atlanta. Pretty underwhelming show to be honest. The band played fine but there was something missing. It didn't help that there was only about 200 people there in a place that holds 800. They were very quiet too, I didn't even need earplugs. They stuck mostly to Ruun and Isa material but pulled out a couple of old tunes for the encore (including "Allfadr Odinn" from the Emperor split!).

So depressed. Picked up the Onion on Thursday but didn't read more than the Henry Rollins interview until this morning--only to see that Mike Keneally and Bryan Bellar, along w/ SYL's drummer Gene Hoglan and Metalocalypse co-creator Brendon Small were performing for free last night in Berkeley.
Keneally & Bellar are prog geniuses and a lot of fun live, how awesome would it have been to see them doing metal--jokey or otherwise (although I have to say that joke or no, the Dethalbum, instrumentally, is one of my favorite things this year).

I have an old ID..don't recall if they made it to my town tho. Both Bellar and Keneally were connected to maybe my alltime favorite musician in Kevin Gilbert. Keneally especially..he did a tribute a few years back at Nearfest and also at ProgWest in CA about 6 years ago this week. Kevin's "The Shaming of the True" album.
Of course Kevin died..and with that topic, I have yet to hear any Decapitated that I know of, but with this news it has inspired me to check them out. Sadly, a bit too late, but better late as they say...
Not sure if anyone has heard the upcoming Queensryche covers album "Take Cover"..I just listened to some of it yesterday..not bad actually. Floyd, Peter Gabriel, The Police among others..tomorrow I'm gonna check out the rest. I or someone else should Trout it soon (if it hasn't already been).
Velocity, thanks for the Nile..I don't believe I've heard that 1 yet.

Don't know where you are, but they are playing at Northwestern university Nov. 18 with ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead. I talked to somebody in the studet group that is bringing them and they are thinking about opening it up to the general public because they are nervous they won't pack the house (NU kids have an EXTREMELY low tolerance for anything even remotely "heavy"...two years ago My Morning Jacket came here and I heard multiple kids complain that they didn't like the heavy metal band!).

http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1851274Dream Theater, Opeth, 3, and Between the Buried And Me. For most fans of this genre, this can't get much better.
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE:
November 5th 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DREAM THEATER’S “PROGRESSIVE NATION” featuring OPETH, 3 and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME to embark on inaugural tour of North America throughout April & May 2008.
New York progressive metal pioneers DREAM THEATER are set to unveil their maiden voyage of “PROGRESSIVE NATION”. A package tour they will headline that will also feature the talents of OPETH, 3 and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.
The tour is the brainchild of DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy who explains: “I’ve been wanting to assemble a package tour like this for many years now. With all of the festivals and package tours that go through America, I’ve been talking with our manager and agent for over 10 years now about doing something that focuses on the more progressive, musician-oriented side of hard rock and metal. I decided it was time to stop talking the talk, lace up and finally walk the walk”
While DREAM THEATER co-headlined 2005’s GIGANTOUR along side MEGADETH, as well as embarking on previous co-headlining runs with both QUEENSRYCHE and JOE SATRIANI, they have primarily built their 22 year career on the road playing solely to their own audience. Portnoy comments: “I’ve always prided myself on personally hand picking new and exciting opening acts for DREAM THEATER in the past. Bands such as PORCUPINE TREE, SYMPHONY X, SPOCK’S BEARD, FATES WARNING, PAIN OF SALVATION and KING’S X. In all of these cases, it was important for me to pick bands that I admire and respect but also ones that I know our fans will enjoy. And I think playing with DT has helped expand all of those band’s fanbases as a direct result. I am hoping PROGRESSIVE NATION will continue to do the same thing in offering an audience for more daring and experimental acts that otherwise may not get the mainstream exposure they so rightly deserve.”
Joining the bill for this inaugural run is Sweden’s legendary OPETH who have been enjoying an ever-growing and expanding audience of their own for many years now. DT’s Roadrunner Records label-mates will be ready to unleash their new album come next spring and PROGRESSIVE NATION should be a great launching pad for their next World Tour cycle. Guitarist/Vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt adds:
"We're very excited about this upcoming tour with DREAM THEATER. It will be the first tour that we're doing in support of our upcoming record, and also somewhat of a dream come true personally as I've been a fan of theirs for a long time. It's quite intimidating to be on the bill with such amazing musicians but obviously we'll try and give them a run for their money and pull out a few nice licks of our own. I guess we'll need to practice a little bit for this....how boring! Yet, I can't wait for this tour to start and I'm sure we'll have a blast with the DT guys as well as together with the other bands on the bill!"
Also on the bill with their unique blend of pop, funk and hard rock is upstate New York’s 3 who issued the following statement: "3 is very pleased to announce its participation in the PROGRESSIVE NATION tour. For well over a decade DREAM THEATER has been the vanguard of progressive rock and we are completely psyched to flex with these heavyweights, playing much of our new record "The End is Begun". This package will rock and awe fans everywhere as one of the most important tours of the year. It's a progressive way of music, a progressive way of life....welcome to the PROGRESSIVE NATION tour.”
North Carolina’s BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME are enjoying rave reviews and critical acclaim for their latest CD “Colors” and are looking forward to sharing the stage each night with both DREAM THEATER and OPETH. Vocalist/Keyboardist Tommy Rogers comments: "We are very excited to be touring with two bands that have been such an integral part of our musical upbringing. It is a wonderful opportunity to have our music heard by new ears."
DREAM THEATER are currently in the middle of their “Chaos In Motion” World Tour which has already traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America in support of their latest Roadrunner Records CD “Systematic Chaos”. The World Tour will continue throughout 2008 hitting Asia, Australia and South America before concluding with PROGRESSIVE NATION returning to North America in April/May 2008.
Portnoy hopes that this first venture of PROGRESSIVE NATION will prove to be a success that can enable himself and DREAM THEATER to continue the package into future years and begin a tradition that musicians and fans alike can count on for quality musicianship and artistic integrity on future tours.

Ooohh...just about my favourite band ever.
We Are The Romans is my favourite album ever and Thank God For the Worker Bee's (Off American Nervoso) is probably one of my favourite songs ever.
They only ever released two albums so the reissues are basically the same, but with added bass according to Sask (I havn't heard them yet).
They are one of the most original hardcore bands in history and We Are The Romans seriously is one of
THE classic albums of the 90's.
On the downside, the University firewall here doesn't let me upload which is really annoying. Maybe some of the others can help you out.

Dead Mountain Mouth got a good reaction here last year, so hopefully we unite for this. Given their step up from EP to LP, though, I wonder exactly what kind of madness is gonna be on this disc. Wow I just got back from seeing 4 bands,
Gojira
Job For a Cowboy
Beneath the Massacre
and Behemoth.
Ok going-in I had heard good things about Behemoth, but was somewhat luke warm on their studio stuff, even compared to Gojira and now my introduction to JFaC.
Beneath the Massacre..were ok..I was not entirely paying attn to their set part of the time. I actually think they were a bit like JFaC, but not as good or as technical. Their drummer tho honestly looked totally effortless. Maybe that's his style, but it was kinda freaky to watch and wonder how that style was with their kind of music anyway.
Gojira was not bad, but I cannot claim to have been totally floored by them..even to the extent of the studio works. I think maybe a lot of that could be the upfront and in-your-face nature of the vocals on the albums, and live it didn't always do that from what I could tell. Still, they played some of the MARS TO SIRIUS stuff I enjoy, and they hardly mailed-in their performance,
Job For a Cowboy, having today checking them out for the 1st time, I was impressed by a lot of their EP "Doom." Very good =, tight, well constructed songs on most of that EP. In concert, the 1st piece they did I liked a lot and worked. They were switching off leads between guitarists..the Rythmic death growls were working, etc. But as their set went on, I didn't feel as much excitement after that 1st song. None the less, I did pickup a copy of that EP and mean to listen to that along with their 1st LP "Genesis" at some point.
Behemoth totally stole the show. Talk about a band who brings it live. Painting their faces in possibly a Kiss-tradtion?..they were amped from the 1st second they hit the stage. Their fucking drummer was far and away the most skilled musician that hit the stage. Really TIGHT and technical..actually, I don't think it'd be a stretch to say he is a level or 2 above his bandmates, but at least 4 or 5 songs in their set did floor me. Technical, less was more with fitting the songs. Not every thing they did mind you was like this, but the energy was at a gigantic level..I swear if their singer gets that much of an adrenaline rush just pumping up the crowd every night, he's gotta be taking drugs or drinking Jolt or something.
I don't know that much of their studio work, but I'm digging "Demigod" a lot right now, however they may be one of those bands who are good in studio..sometimes great..but their live shows are a can't-miss.

They were actually originally a black metal band, so they've brought a bit of that BM theatricality (as well a little bit of the musical style) to death metal. I dig it, they're an awesome sight.

Thelema 6,

About their vocalist--the death growls are fine and all, but sometimes he sounds way too much like a rabid chihuahua.

Press release:
QUOTE
Genghis Tron has completed work on their brand new full-length album and Relapse Records debut, "Board Up The House."
Genghis Tron recorded "Board Up The House" at Godcity studios in Salem, MA with producer Kurt Ballou. The album's artwork can be previewed here and the complete tracklisting is as follows: "Board Up The House", "Endless Teeth", "Things Don’t Look Good", "Recursion", "I Won’t Come Back Alive", "City On A Hill", "The Whips Blow Back", "Colony Collapse", "The Feast", "Ergot", and "Relief." The album will see a February 2008 international release.
Genghis Tron says of the album and recording process; "After well over a year of very hard work, we're incredibly happy and relieved to announce that we've finally finished our second album, Board Up the House. We finished tracking and mixing at Godcity Studio (Salem, MA) in late September, but we just completed the mastering process a few days ago. The album sounds...huge. I'll leave it at that. We've never been prouder. However, in lieu of spouting some self-serving hyperbole about achieving our twisted vision and/or making the best and most unique GT album to date, we'll let the tunes speak for themselves. Keep your eyes and ears open for a preview track in the near future."

Anyone know anything about a band called Abigail Williams? I just heard a track on XM and it was intriguing - basically melodic death metal with piano/keyboards.
Oh, and maybe it just clicked for me, but I kinda liked a Leng Tch'e song I heard as well. That's a band I have had a hard time getting into.

Yeah, they're not bad. They just have a 20 minute EP out.
They're more well-known among the Revolver-reading crowd for their tendency to hire attractive keyboardists:

They must be getting good buzz to have just an EP out and get on Liquid Metal. Or they know somebody, I guess. I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

if anyone's a fan, agalloch is releasing a new EP of acoustic tracks early 2008, along with a few tour dates. i've heard some good things about primordial, but havent checked them out yet. any recommendations on a good album to hear first?
Primordial's last one,
The Gathering Wilderness, is excellent.
The Gathering Wilderness is such a great album--I really need to listen to that more. Especially "The Coffin Ships." When does their new album come out? And this is going to be followed up by an acoustic Agalloch EP? Color me happy.

TALKING METAL TV Show tonight on FUSE TV (for those who get that)
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermo...ewsitemID=8399312:30AM Eastern Time on FUSE Friday 11/9. Reairs Saturday 11/10 an hour earlier I guess.
Fuse, the national music television network, has green-lighted "Talking Metal on Fuse", a one-hour pilot that brings the number-one heavy metal/hard rock podcast on iTunes to television. Hosted by Mark Strigl and John Ostronomy — the ultimate metal geeks and hard rock aficionados — the show provides a unique perspective and insider's view into the world of metal and hard rock music.
Premiering on Friday, November 9 at 12:30 a.m. ET, "Talking Metal on Fuse" brings Mark and John's zany antics and superfan-style perspective to viewers. They take fans on a wild ride where anything can happen, including guitar lessons with Dave Mustaine (MEGADETH), a book-signing road trip with Nikki Sixx (MÖTLEY CRÜE, SIXX A.M.), cocktails with Serj Tankian (SYSTEM OF A DOWN) and a home studio makeover-turned-impromptu jam session with members of GUNS N' ROSES. Mark and John are joined by sidekicks Bud Friendly (the metal wrestler/commentator), resident guitarist "Metal" Mike Chlasciak (member of Rob Halford's and Sebastian Bach's solo bands) and the "Talking Metal" fans, a rotating group of in-studio guests who join in on the metal conversation by offering opinions and throwing up the metal horns.
"Heavy metal has some of the most loyal and passionate fans, and has been one of the most consistent performers in music television," said Eric Sherman, president, Fuse. "Fuse is committed to showcasing a variety of music genres and we're thrilled to be able to bring Mark and John's distinctive voice, along with their number-one podcast to our network."

This should be awesome. They're so strong instrumentally anyhow, the vocals always seem superfluous to me.
Welcome, Zveldzorg.

Wow, I couldn't agree less. As much I love them, I think their music could easily become cloying if they didn't have the harsh black-metal vocals to balance things out now and then.

i agree - the music is definately solid, but the lyrics/vox are great, and really contribute a lot to their overall sound. a few of my friends don't really dig the vox much either though, so just a matter of taste i guess
