I know I'm alone in my love for the Trouble/Dug Pinnick album from a few years ago...I'll upload it this weekend if anyone's interested.
ParticleHustler
No you're not. Although that one song - Candy Andy Jane - is a rip off of a Babys song (I think it's Midnight Rendezvous...been a while since I listened to this album). Otherwise, it's a solid album.
wp64
Interesting Metallica discussions, I know what you're talking about but I have never really experienced it. Sometimes I wish I grew up when those albums were coming out, and when athletes weren't all juiced up, etc. But there are advantages to the "techno age" too.

Also, bringing back an album from 2 or 3 years ago. Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God. I haven't seen much discussion about this album on the forum, so I wanted to hear some opinions on this. I have been giving it quite a few spins on the road trip to NYC. I absolutely love it, I can't get over the song...NOW YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING TO DIE FOR!
James D
Yeah, good song and it's not surprising that you like them given that you're a Pantera fan. I don't know if you've finished your marathon reading session of this thread (tongue.gif) but I'm pretty sure they've been mentioned a couple of times.

Good band who seem to have found a good way of achieving some success without completely selling their soul!

Oh and Sask, I'm enjoying that From a Second Story Window album you posted. It's so refreshing to hear a band who do the clean/heavy vocal thing and do it properly. Vocals are just superb on this thing.
Umberto Eco The Dolphin
See my avatar for my favorite Trouble album. The 2 Rick Rubin albums are very, very high in my all-time favorites list. The best sounding rock guitar ever recorded......to me, at least.

Also, the Supershine album is a good one, indeed.
ParticleHustler
Love Ashes of the Wake - that and the latest one have been essential to my workouts. I credit AotW for helping me lose 70 pounds. "Words can be broken, so can bones. EXECUTE THE MANDATE."

Has anyone seen the movie/documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot that was filmed in 1986? Is it worth watching or a waste of time? Looks kinda stupid but fun. Lots of metal fans goofing off and/or under the influence.

Vivian Darkbloom

Heavy Metal Parking Lot is hella funny. The bit with the dude singing "Livin' after Midnight" alone is worth the price of admission.
wp64
Actually I am only on page 94 of this thread, I have taken a break because I am on vacation and don't have any paper to make notes of bands that seem to be interesting to me. I have heard a lot about the influence of Pantera to LoG. The first time I heard AotW I wasn't blown away and I didn't pick it up again until 6 months later. I must have listened to the album 5 times in a day, absolutely steller.

Oh and ParticleHustler my favorite line is, "SLIP OF THE TONGUE, SLIT OF THE THROAT!"

How metal is this?
QUOTE (Centurion;4950)

Gregorian chanting, he’s not: Behold, in the video above, 62-year-old Capuchin monk Cesare Bonizzi, a Rip Van Winkle-looking friar who — when he’s not worshipping God — is worshipping the gods of heavy metal in his native Italy. We’re pretty sure Fratello Metallo (or Brother Metal, as he’s called in Italy) is only a monk in appearance, as his new album Mysteries features songs about sex, alcohol, tobacco, God and other debauchery you’d find on a Sepultra album. Bonizzi reportedly got the metal itch after seeing Metallica in concert 15 years ago (Why he was at the concert, we have no idea.) Since then, he’s headlined metal festivals throughout Europe and has released 18 albums. Despite his day job, Brother Metal’s music “isn’t aimed at saving souls,” but “converting people to live life to the fullest.”

It's hard to tell if they're any good from the bits of pieces here, but he definitely seems to have the vocals down.

not myself really..I know the progressive (and now some tech/death and black) stuff, but basic Metal listening experience I have very little compared to others in this thread.
Saskadelphia
New stuff I've been listening to lately:

From A Second Story Window - Conversations...Love this album! Never saw it coming.

All That Remains - Overcome...One of the most reliable bands out there. No changes, just impeccable melodeath-tinged metalcore, with great solos and even better vocal hooks. Hoping to find a way to wriggle into the Warped Tour to catch these dudes (and dudette) again.

Misery Index - Traitors...upon first listen, it sounds like a big-time improvement over the last record. Brootal as ever, plenty of smart, political lyrics, and the usual jaw-dropping production we've come to expect from Kurt Ballou (is he having a great year as producer, or what?)

Chrome Division - Booze, Broads, and Beelzebub...Never liked Shagrath's side project. Though this one's an improvement sonically over the debut, the songs are still lazily-tossed-off Motorhead/Turbonegro rip-offs. And a lame ZZ Top cover to boot.

Lauren Harris - Calm Before the Storm...Not great, but actually half decent. Really!!! It's a lot better when you're not stuck hearing this while waiting impatiently for Iron Maiden to take the stage. Bit of a UFO vibe, right down to a cover of "Natural Thing".

Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal...Weird self-referential side project by the guy from As I Lay Dying. Music's not bad, kind of fun really, but the skits are a far cry from the genius of SOD.

Misery Signals - Controller...They've come a long way since sounding like the dumbest band ever when I saw them open for SYL way back when, to the point where I can listen to an album of theirs all the way through. I greatly prefer ATR, but this is mildly enjoyable.

HammerFall - Masterpieces...Part fun, part dumb collection of covers.

Raunchy - Wasteland Discotheque...As mentioned upthread, I'm really taken aback by how much I like this. If you like Soilwork (and especially if you've always wanted to hear Soilwork cover Rockwell), there's no reason why you can't like this one.

Out of all my new arrivals, or the new arrivals I've bothered to crack open anyway, current faves remain Into Eternity and Caina. Two very different but equally great releases.

And damn, does Darkthrone's Panzerfaust ever rip. Probably my fave of my ever-expanding Darkthrone collection...slowly catching up!
James D
The Coffins album that Burzum posted a bunch of pages back is great btw. Really slow doomy metal with death vocals. I think I'm right in saying they're Japanese as well. Is a very good album.

I'm interested to hear the new Mouth of the Architect which has been getting some very good reviews. Well, in the UK anyway.
Vivian Darkbloom

Ashes of the Wake is B-Grade Pantera imitation, but I now love it too.

Speaking of post-punk, hardcore, etc. There are rumors of a third Glassjaw album. According to Kerrang (Sask?) the album could be released in late 2008 or early 2009.

Oh man, I remember these guys. Still have that album somewhere. They were okay, sort of ATDI goes nu-metal, right? Lots of Ross Robbinson juggajiggawugga riffs.

more sorta coalesce-goes-melodic/deftones-go-noisecore/drowningman-goes-a-lot-better. that debut is awesome stuff.

QUOTE
And after the anti-authoritarian theme of Justice, they did an about-face with the jingoistic "Don't Tread on Me"...total turn-off.

that song always struck me as facetious - the metal riffing of a song from the musicals to begin it. 'to secure peace is to prepare for war' indeed

Part Brooklyn avant-garde metal, part prog, part Jesus Lizard/Big Black, wickedly catchy.

Monumental.

Album's out in September, but I'm dying to share this right now. The samples above will just have to do.

Oh, that is nice. Thanks, Sask!

Danzig - Her Black Wings

Sounds like Danzig borrowed a riff from Black Sabbath's Zero the Hero.
Saskadelphia
Hell, "Paradise City" ripped off "Zero the Hero".

Speaking of Paradise City that music video is awesome! Just had to point that out I guess... unsure.gif

I'm listening to the new album by Krallice, the experimental black metal project by guitar great Mick Barr and collaborator Colin Marston (Behold the Arctopus, Disrhythmia), and it's incredible. In the same vein as Burzum, brutal yet drenched in trancelike melody, but the huge difference is Barr's presence. Having a virtuoso guitar talent on a black metal album is very rare, and he adds such a unique dimension to this album, his crazy tremelo picking style (see Ocrilim) dominating the record.

I can't share it, but Profound Lore has posted a sample track:
http://www.profoundlorerecords.com/mp3/Krallice_Wretched.mp3

Incredibly, the album gets better after that opening song. The last track "Forgiveness in Rot" is a jaw-dropper...stunning, really. This is bound to be my favourite black metal album of the year, no question. Burz and other fans of cutting edge BM, watch for this one. Destined to be this year's Cobalt.

Finally heard this and all I can say is wow. Brilliant stuff.

Here's the whole album:

Anyone remember the first Zozobra album I uploaded last year? Well here's the follow up. I havn't gave this a listen yet but it's supposed to be pretty good. Doom type metal in the mould of Old Man Gloom although I'd be surprised if it was on a level with anything that stuff.

Yeah, it still holds up extremely well, it still ranks very high on my list of 2008 faves.

That Wetnurse, though...possible album of the year? The boldest metal album since Ire Works, that's for sure.
James D
The one track they have up on their myspace is brilliant. So yeah, I'm excited to hear the album in its entirety.

I glanced at the 2007 Top 100 albums thread from a while back and I thought of an idea...I don't know if you guys want to do this or not BUT...

I thought it would be fun to see what metal fans rank their favorite 2008 albums...I know it's early in the year to start this talk but I was thinking that we could have our own vote for top 100 metal albums of 2008. I would be happy to tabulate votes and points. We could decide together on a proper scoring system and then go from there. I think it would be interesting to see at the end of the year how the list would shake up.

Any thoughts?

I posted my mid-year list here. Right now I'd add Caina, Disfear, From A Second Story Window, Into Eternity, Destinity, and of course Wetnurse, and probably make room for the upcoming Enslaved disc...

This Krallice album slays. Same goes for that Wetnurse track.

Oh man, that's a really cool idea - a metal-only eoy list. Whoever wants can contribute a list of metal releases (with the parameters of "metal" loosely defined, I imagine) and we'll get ourselves a little eoy circle jerk going up in her'. So down.

HUGE NEWS for Maudlin of the Well fans!

check this out

http://www.kayodot.net/toby/index2.html

(click on the "News" link and scroll down)

on the account of donations, Toby says they are hoping to finish and release some older material that never got finished!

I am likely gonna donate something.

gonna happen!

http://tinyurl.com/5sf2uq

update! (aka "holy shit!")

From Toby's blog:

"An extremely generous fan Etienne Dube just donated enough for motW to be able to do a full length album.. unbelievable and amazing news! Everyone else can keep donating if you wish, as further donations will help us hire orchestral musicians (cello, etc), and actually press copies instead of having this be an internet release. The recording will start Feb 10.. congratulations to Etienne and to everyone!"

Here's the Paypal link for those who would still like to donate.

http://bizarreflower.blogspot.com/

End profits for the month: $12,000. So that's $6000 going to Toby. I did my best, now it's in your hands Toby.

maybe the name of the album should be "Holy Shit!!"

Plus it would be a great way for people who missed the best metal albums of the year to have a guide of what they want to listen too. And it will get the other SOMBies talking... wink.gif
James D
lol, define Metal though.
wp64
Well anything that we talk about on this board...Sask could help us out with defining metal. Starting like late October, early November we could start having people post their top 100 or 50 whatever woudl be best. And then we could figure out a scoring system we could use the same thing they use for the top 100 albums of '08. It would be very interesting, I would love to see how many of our picks would end up on the top '08 albums.

If someone could post an idea of a good scoring system, I wouldn't even know where to start...I would be happy to tabulate up the scores similar to what Good Old Mr Bill or whatever did in the '07 Top Albums list.
Burz
I honestly don't see the point in having a separate poll. There's maybe 10 people who would participate and most of them probably wouldn't come up with more than 10 or 15 albums.
James D
Well if you're really up for doing this. The main AOTY poll usually starts aound December time with people posting their lists etc. Last year it was restricted to a top 50 I think. The weighted scoring system that we used last year worked really well I thought since it rewarded the #1 vote, so to speak. I'd be up for doing that again, I guess.

For me, I'd still be making one list. For a metal orientated list, I'd just remove non-metal albums and submit what I have remaining.
James D
Tending to agree with Burzum. Plus, the variety of the main AOTY poll is what makes it interesting.
Saskadelphia

That's true. Plus the metal titles made an exceptionally strong showing in last year's poll.
Freddie Freelance
And the (some of the) best Metal albums usually make the final EOY list.
wp64
Alright well we could cut it down to even top 20 or 10 just for the fun of it...I don't know. We should have a vote,

Yay or nay whoever wins, wins.

Yeah, and the more people we have in this thread, the better metal does in the year-end polling smile.gif
wp64
Having a metal only album poll with attract attention...for sure.

It's yay from me.
pigfuck
If we did this, I'd only want a top ten, with people submitting 20-30 albums for consideration. This would obviously be a small thing, and my interest in it would be to see the consensus picks of a relatively small group of people who (just so happen to) have great taste. We're all rational beings, so the definition of metal would be left up to each person submitting his/her list. This would be something entirely slighter than the grand EOY list, and something far less time consuming (I hope.) I'd even do some research and tabulate the fucker. (That said, I wouldn't do a countdown; that kind of affair is beyond me.)
James D
Yeah, top 10 is fine.
NewGrass
hmm I think I could do a metal top 10:
1 - The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
2 - Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History
3 - Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
4 - Facedowninshit - Nothing Positive, Only Negative
5 - Nadja - Skin Turns To Glass (new version)
6 - Godflesh - Streetcleaner
7 - Melvins - Houdini
8 - Pentegram - First Daze Here - The Vintage Collection
9 - Boris - Pinkp
10 - High On Fire - Death Is This Communion
11 - Moster Magnet - Spine Of God
James D
Not ever, just this year. An all time metal list would be a spectacular prospect, though.
