A quick reminder to all that this DVD is out today:

IPB Image

Excellent, well-researched, scholarly documentary, done by a Canadian guy who knows his stuff. Terrific interviews, loads of extras, lots of creepy Norwegians, and great music. Hope to watch all the extras tonight.

edit: Chuck Klosterman is hilarious in this film. Only he would appear in a serious metal documentary and start quoting Kiss's "Crazy Crazy Nights"...

Have and enjoy the Savatage, but will check out the other ones.

On a side note, I've been on the biggest Helloween kick this past week, and although the band might say "I want out" I sure don't!

Did anyone see the first part of "Heavy: The Story of Metal" last night of VH1? I'm slowly getting into more metal stuff and I found it pretty interesting. There are three more parts at 8 tonight, Wednesday, and Thursday, and I'm sure that they'll be repeated.

I've heard Scar Symmetry's Calculate the Apocalypse twice in two days on XM's Liquid Metal channel. Pretty Cool. It was even introduced with a "new metal" tag.

The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like a death metal version of The Devin Townsend Band. Which is a good thing!

This is it for me posting for a week or so. We're moving and I'm pulling the plug on the computer later today. See ya on the flipside!

So the best metal album of the first half of 2006 is out...anyone else get it? The digipak version looks amazing (I have the jewel case version). And the liner notes by Fischer and Ain are excellent, offering detailed, and often typically enigmatic, explanations of each track.

It's so great to finally hear this album without the bleeps!

I saw Russian Circles the other week and I'm starting to get into Metal, math rock or whatever people call it. All I really know that I like is Pelican and Russian Circles, I've heard of Isis and Boris, does anyone have any suggestions or could you (you send something) from one of the aforementioned bands. And if there is anything like Pelican but has shorter songs and has a crazy bass player, I would appreciate the suggestion.

It's also being shown on VH1 Classic -- I've seen all four parts. They're all pretty similar, with a focus on mainstream metal of whichever chronology.

Having said that, I had intended to clean house when it was on, but instead was glued to tv.

Worse than that it seems like the producers only collected quotes that mention how influential the bands that they're focusing are. It's a "Revisionist Story of Metal" instead of a real Story of Metal. I can understand that they only had 4 hours to fit it all in, but they left out or glossed over major bands and influences and no one mentioned them? Not even in passing "Oh, I like this band, too..."

They could've cut Marilyn Manson's section in half & added more Motorhead or Speed/Death/Thrash/Black Metal.

Those of you on Oink, go download the new Agalloch album! This thing is unreal. Rarely does a metal album elicit the adjective "gorgeous" the way this one does. As far as teaser tracks go, this one's a stunner:

"Falling Snow"

RIYL: Pelican, Isis, Emperor, Ulver
Burz
That Agalloch song is pretty good, dl'ing the album now. Also, the new Envy just leaked if anyone cares. It's one of my most anticipated albums of the year, can't wait to listen to it.

may as well y'all send the thing this now that I think about it. A 95 release. Don't know much about it really, except that it's a side project from the guy from Satyricon. But it's not black metal, it's ambient/classical in a black metal vein. Really no guitar, mostly synth, percussion and vocal singing. Give it a try.

Thanks for the Wongraven...it should be interesting.

The new Between the Buried and Me covers album has leaked...I normally find it hard to get excited about stuff like this, but this one's a different story, as they chose to cover an insanely wide variety of bands. This was mentioned a few months back, but here's the tracklisting again:

01 - Blackened (Metallica)
02 - Kickstart My Heart (Motley Crue)
03 - The Day I Tried To Live (Soundgarden)
04 - Bicycle Race (Queen)
05 - Three Of A Perfect Pair (King Crimson)
06 - Us And Them (Pink Floyd)
07 - Geek USA (Smashing Pumpkins)
08 - Forced March (Earth Crisis)
09 - Territory (Sepultura)
10 - Change (Blind Melon)
11 - Malpractice (Faith No More)
12 - Little 15 (Depeche Mode)
13 - Cemetary Gates (Pantera)
14 - Colorblind (Counting Crows)

What's most impressive isn't that the band interpret each song in different ways, but that they faithfully duplicate the originals. You'd think they'd just go and metalcore everything up, sticking in screaming, breakdowns, and whatnot, but they way they can shift styles (just listen to the first track on Alaska) is their forte, and they prove they're just as capable of mimicking Queen as well as Sepultura. The whole "look at what we can do" shtick is obvious, but damn, they're good at it. Best tracks: King Crimson's "Three of a Perfect Pair" (brilliantly done), Faith No More's "Malpractice", Pink Floyd's "Us and Them" (a bit obvious, but man do they sell it), Metallica's "Blackened", and Depeche Mode's "Little 15". And the Counting Crows cover is nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

You know what the best part is? Lots of metalcore children are going to be turned on to some music they otherwise wouldn't have been interested in. I was like that myself when I was 14.

See, I was disappointed about this. I wanted them to do something different with the songs. I'd rather just listen to the originals than these note-for-note covers. It's just boring. It didn't help that they chose to cover some horrible shit either ("Kickstart My Heart"?, Counting Crows?, Blind Melon?!?, ugh). It's cool that maybe some 14 year olds will be turned on to Sepultura and all, but this is going straight to the recycle bin.

I definitely get your point, and I'd normally agree with you, but all the leaping from style to style (with no hint of irony whatsoever) left me impressed, in spite of the carbon copy feel of the songs. They do tweak the Depeche Mode song a tiny bit, which I like. But yeah, "Kickstart My Heart" is pretty cringe-inducing.

Would anyone happen to have Underoath's Cries of the Past? I've been looking for this thing for awhile now. I have only heard the title track, and it was quite a few years ago, but i remember it being a monster of a song. It was back when they were a metal band, and quite a good one at that imo.

Hmm, been wondering about this for a bit.

See, the likes of Pelican and Russian Circles are a level of 'nice'-Metal that hasn't really been around too long (unless you're counting early Yes or something. Hey, that might be something for you to check out, actually. Close To The Edge from 1973).

This genre of Metal pretty much has a chronology as follows:

IPB ImageIPB Image
Black Sabbath/Blue Cheer (late 60s, early 70s):

IPB ImageIPB Image
Swans/St Vitus (early-mid 80s):

IPB ImageIPB Image
Goldflesh/Melvins (late 80s/early 90s):

IPB ImageIPB Image
Earth/Neurosis (90s):

IPB ImageIPB Image
Isis/present day stuff (2000-6)

That's pretty much a potted thing. Bands like Obsessed, Kiss It Goodbye, Corrupted, Burning Witch and millions of others could qualify, but to me these are the big generational bands. Damn it must have sucked to be into this stuff in the late 70s. But I guess that's what Born Too Late is about. Actually, Kyuss would be a good representative of the mid-90s, as they took the massive riffs of Sabbath and certain SST bands (Black Flag, St. Vitus) and melded them to some really gorgeous music. The bass playing, especially on the last two albums, was more Geezer Butler than Mike Watt but still cool. Quite dubby in places.

But yeah, most of what I have listed isn't that 'pretty', but well worth a look anyway. I guess that your next port of call is with the Kayo Dot debut. Very modern, with more subtle dynamic build than many of their peers. The vocals, unlike Isis or Rosetta, are mostly melodic and clean, and at times remind of Jeff Buckley (albeit without his vocal gymnastics). The album is really lush, though. Proper beautiful stuff, and probably the peak of the genre for this decade thus far.

As I love the ugly as much as the beautiful in this musical yin-yang, I'd suggest going through the bands above (or at least the albums pictured) for an idea of where the scene came from and where it's going. Early Swans and Godflesh, for example, can be very disturbing, but are an essential part of the puzzle. An interesting set of albums to check out would be the triptych Swans released in the early 90s of White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity, Love Of Life and The Great Annihilator. Not very Metal, but gorgeous, and really damn good.

While I pictured Isis in the above diagram (if you can call it that), I much prefer Boris and am uploading one of their songs, 'Flood 3', a 20 minute segment of their ridiculously good Flood album from 2000.

Anyway. I've blathered on enough. I'll post again with some mp3s when they have upped.

According to a recent interview with Abbath, Immortal is reuniting. Story here.

QUOTE
So then an Immortal reunion is no longer out of the question?

“No!”

Pardon?

“I didn’t really want to say it, but I don’t give a shit. We will come back, stronger than ever. I’ve met with Horgh for the first time in over a year. He’s built his new house here, right around the corner. In the next few days we will begin to rehearse our old ‘Blizzard Beasts’ classics. I’m already really hot on the idea.”

And you’re certain we should print that? Then there’s no way back…

“I’m a little out of practice, this being my first interview in two years. But somehow feeling good, that it’s out now. I’m mostly glad for our fans.”

The petty cash rattling should be good again also.

“Don’t say that! To clear that up: we’re not coming back for the money. If we had been going for the cash, we wouldn’t have allowed Immortal to split”

Then only the date is missing.

“Immortal are timeless frost. One year more or less doesn’t make a difference. We have all the time in the world.”

Big news today. We now know when Maiden Week (Version Two) will happen. biggrin.gif

QUOTE
Iron Maiden plan to release their new studio album entitled A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, in early September.

The band started writing songs at the end of 2005 after a short break from their hugely successful festival appearances in Europe and the USA. After Christmas the songs were completed and rehearsed when the band then got together with producer Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley at Sarm West Studios in London to start work on recording the backing tracks.

Kevin Shirley has now co-produced three of the bands studio albums alongside Steve Harris, as well as two of their recent Live DVD's and albums. From this the working relationship between Kevin and the band seems to get stronger and stronger. Says Kevin, 'The Beast is back! I feel from the outset we all clicked on this one. We spent two months in the studio, from Go to Whoa - from Nicko's 'tubs up' to final mixes and sequenced master! That's a tiny gestation period for an album. Producing Iron Maiden is like sitting in the head and driving one of those mammoth automatons from Star Wars or Saturday morning cartoons! And there's nothing that can stop it!'

'I feel incredibly privileged to have been around to see this album born and breathe life. There have been only a couple of occasions in my career when the ENTIRE process of recording felt so complete - and it is on display here.'

As on previous projects all of the tracks were performed live and together in one room. No click tracks or computer tightening or manipulation has happened at any stage of the recording.

Says Steve Harris,' I think in many ways this has been the easiest album in terms of recording that we've ever done. The whole process of writing through to recording was very natural. I think in terms of the material we've also pushed our boundaries yet again and I think it will please our fans but also really surprise a lot of people as well. The sound we've managed to get is very powerful for a Maiden record and all of us have pushed ourselves in our own ways to create something that we're all immensely proud of and I think working as quickly as we did with Kevin really was part of that process. We simply can't wait to take this out on the road. We've played some great shows and had a lot fun recently introducing some of our older songs to a new generation of fans. However for us personally we're incredibly excited about getting out and performing these new tracks.'

Says Bruce Dickinson,'This album has to be our best since working with Kevin. There is such a wide scope of musicianship on this album and in parts this album is truly epic. I thought with the likes of Paschendale from the last studio album that we could only hope to surpass that but having now heard the album back as well as sitting with a few select people and hearing their reactions as well I truly believe we have managed it. Every one of us has put everything into this record and it's really paid off. However we've had such fun making it that it's almost difficult to believe what we've managed to achieve in the time it took.'

The full track listing is as below.

A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

1. Different Worlds (Smith/Harris) 4.17
2. These Colours Don't Run (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 6.52
3. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 8.44
4. The Pilgrim (Gers/Harris) 5.07
5. The Longest Day (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 7.48
6. Out Of the Shadows (Dickinson/Harris) 5.36
7. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg (Murray/Harris) 7.21
8. For The Greater Good of God (Harris) 9.24
9. Lord Of Light (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 7.23
10. The Legacy (Gers/Harris) 9.20

Nice to see Smith play a prominent role on the new disc...I've always been a fan of his songs. And another new Murray song. His songs are few and far between, but always good.
Diesel
Christ...those songs long enough, guys?

I'm not really complaining, because they'll probably be good, I hope, but man...only one song is actually short enough for "single" consideration. Not too shocked, though...the last two albums have mostly been given over to epics, as well.

Metal bands used to routinely release singles that were about 5 minutes. I mean, 'Enter Sandman' was 5:29 and that was pretty much the shortest of the singles off the Black album. I think it's nice to see; I just hope they're actually good singles!

Smith is a good songwriter, I have to admit. Hey Sask - did you ever listen to that Psycho Motel album back in the day?

I couldn't give a good golly goddamn if the cover is a picture of dirt. I just hope they can keep the tempos up. It seems like they get into too many slow chugging along songs recently. I want some fireworks, ya know? Like the Trooper, something that takes the fuck off at the beginning and just keeps on rolling.

Spektr - Near Death Experience

QUOTE
Spektr is a black metal duo from France about whom little is actually known. Their debut album, No Longer Human Senses (aka Et Fugit Interea), issued in 2004, took virtually every one in the scene by surprise prompting those good folks at Aquarius Records in San Francisco to laud it the "weirdest black metal record ever." While there are heavy distorted guitars and frantically pummeled drums, and utterly unfathomable vocals, this is simply one mode of attack for the duo. Long noise drones, found sounds, radio transmissions, etc. are equal parts. ON Near Death Experience, the band ups the ante. From the opener, "The Violent Stink of Twitching Terror," we hear not only parts of Emperor, Bathory, and label mates Blut Aus Nord, but also Swans, early Lustmord, Whitehouse, and more. The crack and boom of guitars make their appearances well known of course, but they are wrapped in a narcotic, utterly slithering mix of creepy ambience that sets the listener's guts to churning. This is experimental music, where ambience and sound sculpture play equal roles, there is nothing remotely settling or pleasant about this sound. It's pure black. Everything is woven together in fuzzy high end shimmering glass-like sound. Buzzes and glitches, bells, found voices, film a soundtrack dialogue, all of them are stuck into the black hole and are vomited out in swathes of something approaching black metal, but somehow both more and less metal. If one thinks of Circle of Ouroborus meeting Stormcrowfleet and the Anaal Nathrakh of The Codex Necro, you get the beginning of the picture, that is this wonderslab of creepy crawly messed up sickness. Toss in the early Burzum or Emperor, mix with sheer strangeness and lots of despair and you have a winner. Near Death Experience also comes packaged with a video playable on the computer that further "illustrates" the band's trademark insanity. Highly recommended if you have the stomach.

Ooh, this looks good.

Hey Burzum - by any chance would you have Weakling's "Dead as Dreams"? I can't find it anywhere.

Ask and you shall receive...

This is as good as black metal gets. Anyone not familiar with this one should grab it.

one of the best albums ever.

Wow, thanks for the stuff, Burzum.

Partially in an attempt to stay organized, and partially because it's mid-year, here's my list of favourite metal albums of 2006 so far. With some of these titles, the term "metal" is used rather loosely, so bear with me.

5. Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain

Holy schnike! Apologies if this was posted elsewhere & I'm wasting bandwidth...I would kill to see this (or at least I'd buy a ticket):

Metallica Plays Master of Puppets in its Entirety!

From Blabbermouth.net, “Metallica performed their classic 1986 album, “Master of Puppets”, in its entirety again Sunday night (June 4) at the Rock im Park festival in Nürnberg, Germany.

The band played all eight songs in their proper sequence for the first time ever at yesterday's (June 3) headlining appearance at the Rock am Ring festival in Nürburgring, Germany—the opening show of the band's "Escape from the Studio '06" tour. The group's setlist for tonight's show at Rock im Park was as follows:

01. Creeping Death
02. Fuel
03. Wherever I May Roam
04. The God That Failed
05. Unforgiven
06. Battery
07. Master of Puppets
08. The Thing That Should Not Be
09. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
10. Disposable Heroes
11. Leper Messiah
12. Orion
13. Damage Inc.
------------------------
14. Sad But True
15. Nothing Else Matters
16. One
17. Enter Sandman
------------------------
18. So What!
19. Seek and Destroy

Oh to see them do Leper Messiah, Orion & Damage Inc....

I was more than pleased to see them pull out Leper Messiah and Damage, Inc. back in 2004.

Orion would be great to hear, what with the cool bass bits and Hetfield's solo...as would Disposable Heroes, that one is rarely performed.

Orion's one of my favorite instrumentals by anyone. I haven't seen Metallica since 1996, but I'd go to see this. There's not a bad song on that album. (Sorry to see they're still playing The Passover Song Creeping Death...).

So, did anyone else see Pitchfork's new monthly metal column? I was wary of this but they seem to have done a decent job (this month anyway). This month's article is about Chicago black metal band Nachtmystium. I never thought I'd get good black metal recommendations from P-fork, but I just grabbed their new album from Oink and it's quite good. So check these guys out and support your local BM scene, Chicago.

I've been meaning to mention Nachtmystium...I downloaded it a while back after seeing the rave review in Decibel, and although I'm not too sure whether I think it's a major album, it's still a very good one. The synth guitar they use is cool.

If there are any Eyehategod fans around here be sure to check out the deal on the new reissues you can get here. $9 (includes shipping) for any of them or $25 for all three. There also getting rid of the original versions of these for $3 each while they last. Great deal if you don't already own these.

Sure, its gonna be mega. But the question remains "is this band any good?'" I've been hugely disappointed from what i've heard.
