P.S. Everyone get the Fantomas-Melvins Big Band DVD. It is great if you like great things.

Worth it for the commentary alone. King Buzzo + Danny DeVito = priceless.

Oh shit, I haven't even done that yet!

Buzz: Did you ever get to meet Bill Cosby?
DeVito: Uh, I'm trying to listen.

Any love around here for the likes of Swarrrm or From Hell??

Swarrm (or is that SWARRM?) are very cool. Intense as fuck, but they do make me yearn for Greenmachine too.

I'll check out Greenmachine, if I can find any.

Edit: Found some, liking it.

Late to the party as usual, but holy fuck is that Krallice slab epic. I'm not usually all that partial to drone-y ambient black metal, but this is some really heavy and spacious stuff. Weird how Barr shreds so manically and still gives the impression of slow, developing motifs and moods. It kind of reminds me of - I don't know?- Weakling, Wolves in the Throne Room in places, some times I even thought of Explosions in the Sky's latest.

I like it a lot, whatever it sounds like.

Edit: The little thrash coda at the end of "Timehusk" fucking slays.

Yes, yes. Totally. I could see putting it up there with Dead As Dreams and Diadem of 12 Stars one of these days. About as perfect as USBM gets.

Also, I could see calling Autechre's Confield "ambient" in order to show off your "That's right! It is this 'difficult' music that speaks to me more than any of the more 'conventional' sounds you people are tied to! I am so open-minded that I name Les Rallizes Denudes and Satori as my favorite 'classic rock' musics!"-type opinions. Talk about pretentious, though! Gee.
power_nap
eh. get real - it is difficult not to obsess over the detail and complexity of confield and nominate it as some of the best 'ambient' or whatever you want to call it music. it is claustrophobic, epic and brutal at the same time, I thought it was appropriate to use as a counterpoint to the ham-handed 'ambient' motives in GT's music, which i am now reluctant to continue to argue about.

Opeth/High on Fire killed tonight. Sad that Nachmystium got the boot, but that meant we got a full hour of Matt Pike and his boys, which can't not be good. They were as awesome as ever. And what a setlist...
Fury Whip
Waste of Tiamat
Eyes and Teeth
Death is This Communion
The Face of Oblivion
Cometh Down Hessian
Baghdad
Turk
Rumors of War
Devilution

Neat to see Kensel sporting the big double-kick drumkit for the first time. Makes one of metal's biggest-sounding drummers sound even bigger. And you know what, I've seen HoF three times now, and I never get sick of seeing Pike do the thing where he plays the riff by sliding his fret hand and points at that hand with the other. Like he's going, "Dude, check out what I can do!" That kind of hot dogging never gets old.

Opeth was as near-perfect as they always are. The new tracks ("Heir Apparent" and "The Lotus Eater") sounded amazing, as did the standards ("Deliverance" always destroys), but the real revelation was "The Night and the Silent Water", it sounded so much better than on record...I went back to play the Roundhouse Tapes version, and indeed, there's more depth to it, thanks to Per Wiberg's mellotronny synths. Akesson is a great addition on guitar, tremendous lead player, plus he and Wiberg altermated lead vox with Mike on "The Lotus Eater", which really adds a new dimension to the band's live sound.

Stoked for tonight. Baroness, High on Fire and Opeth, OH MY.

I've never seen Opeth, so that will probably be the highlight. Then again, HOF are probably my favorite metal band of the last five years, and they've never disappointed in the five times I've already seen them.

PMed Velocity to see if I could meet this mystery lady, she was coy and evasive as usual tongue.gif She probably has a sensible policy of not meeting random strangers from the internet IRL. I can't blame her...for all she knows, I could be Kalmia.

Don't post in this thread too often, but here's my question.

Municipal Waste is playing this Sunday at Chicago's Riot Fest. Never seen them, and I've been dying to catch one of their live shows. But here are the problems:

(1) it's at the Congress; (2) their alotted set time is only 30 minutes; (3) their set kicks off at 2:20 in the afternoon; (4) considering Riot Fest is primarily punk bands, I don't know how amped the crowd will be for a thrash set; and (5) again, it's at the Congress.

Not really sure what I want to do. I actually like a good amount of the other bands playing, but I'm not gonna hang out at the Congress for eight hours to see every band either....and if I'm going, it's mostly for MW. Oh yeah, and tickets are $25.00. Not cheap, but not too expensive either.

So you guys have all got the new Bison album posted upthread, right? Vivian, velocity, and Diesel, I'm looking at you. Think a crusty High on Fire meets Baroness.

Been thoroughly enjoying a similar Canadian band called Fiftywatthead...well worth a sample:

Almost exactly - I'd just throw a little early Metallica thrash in there, with a bit more screaming. Bison = rad. Possible top 20 in EOY, which is awesome considering the quality of the music I've heard this year. Go grab it. About three or four pages back or so, right?

Ha ha. I've always found ambient music to be a bit pretentious. That being said, I went through a pretty solid "post-metal" phase, so..... I suppose I'm guilty as well.

Opeth absolutely KILLED it at the Regency in San Francisco last night!

I missed about half of Baroness, but they were rock solid for the last five songs I saw, inclusing "Rays on Pinion," a really cool epic proggy track I'd never heard, and "Wanderlust."

High on Fire were actually a bit of a disappointment, mostly because of some vexing and persistent sound issues, particularly on the kick drums and the vocals. It was especially frustrating as you could hear they were ripping under all the fuzz. Probably because they were fed up with the mercurial PA, they left sooner than usual, with a disappointingly short set (at least compared to the tour de force Sask reported upthread)

Fury Whip
Cometh Down Hessian
Waste of Tiamat
Death is this Communion
Turk
Rumors of War
Devilution

But Opeth were an absolute revelation, and I'm now kicking myself for not having seen them sooner. Their new guitarist (Frederick from Arch Enemy, I believe) really fills out the sound, and it was incredible to hear them bust out such a varied setlist deep with oldies. The mellotron was in full effect. I believe the set went a little something like this (order may be a little mixed up:

Heir Apparent
The Grand Conjuration
Serenity Painted Death
Hope Leaves
The Lotus Eater
Bleak
The Night and the Silent Water
Deliverance
Demon of the Fall

Encore:

The Drapery Falls

Edit: Velocity, did you end up going?

God I love this band. Not really metal, I guess so much as meth-fueled classic rocky hardcore punk Motorhead-wanna-be's. But it rips, period.

This is the sound of a couple of hipsters who once heard black metal described to them and thought "Yeah we could do that." Then they failed. The screamo/hardcore vocals are just the icing on this suck cake. I've never heard an album that actually made me angry before. This made me angry.

I just saw Baroness headline a show with Genghis Tron on Saturday ;o)

They've been through Portland 3 times in the last few months and have killed it each time.

It's funny, my girlfriend (a recent addition to the heavy metal fan club) says exactly the same about both Baroness and Opeth. Barnoness's drummer is ridiculously entertaining and Akerfeldt does an awesome job of chatting up the audience.

Enjoying fiftywatthead. The vocals are a nice change of pace, or maybe they're just Mastodon-like.

Thanks, and thanks Velocity upthread.

Whatever you want to call them, crossover, thrash-revival...I don't think the kids there for the Bosstones and All (not that there's anything wrong with the Bosstones or All) are gonna be real amped about "some metal band" at 2:30 in the afternoon. However, based on your review I think I'm still gonna try and make it. I may actually have some in-law problems as well (and the Bears have a got a noon start), but I think it will be worth it if I can make it.

great to listen, highly recommended

Background:
“First period”
Shining was formed in 1999 by Jørgen Munkeby (guitar, sax and various instruments) when he moved from his hometown of Tønsberg to Oslo to study in the Norwegian State Academy of Music. As he has been playing in bands ever since he was ten years old, he wished to form a new one in Oslo. In this new school there was a good opportunity for him to choose musicians for this project of his and he chose three he thought to be the best.<!--more--> This new band started playing Jørgen’s music he wrote for the band and also performed in several shows as a support band, in which Jørgen says the band gave highly energetic shows, playing loud and fast. In 2001 the band released their first album, Where The Ragged People Go on “bp Records”, and in 2003 after a tour in China, they released Sweet Shanghai Devil on “Jazzland Records”. These two albums are strictly acoustic jazz music, with much improvisation and with a hardcore feeling which is due to the way they were recorded – “Ragged was recorded with only two microphones, S S Devil with three”. Jørgen say that they set themselves rules of how they should and should not play. However by the time they released those two albums, they felt those rules are too restricting for them, preventing them to do something else, more varied.

“Second period”
Since the band members were playing and composing in other bands as well (for instance, Jørgen and Morten playing in Jaga Jazzist) they were exposed and experienced in playing other types of music. For their next album they used as many instruments as they could, and took advantage of everything they could in studios to get the mixed genre result that is In the Kingdom of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster, which was released through Rune Grammofon in 2005. Shining’s lineup was reinforced after that album with a new bassist and keyboards player (Andreas Schei from Jaga Jazzist). 2007 sees the release of Grindstone which continues Kingdom’s sound and progresses from it as well.

Music:
In their two albums, In the Kingdom of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster and Grindstone, once you get passed the aggressiveness and noisy parts, and give the album a proper listen, you will realize there is a lot that is missed on initial listening. Additional layers of music reveal themselves, more instruments are heard through all the seeming chaos and various styles of music manifest themselves throughout the tracks.
You start to appreciate their ability to create levels inside their music that become apparent as you train your ears with their albums. It can be brutal at times, but it is also melodic (and even Kitschy…). The instrumental music in one track can be this aggressive type mentioned or can be a more amorphic and experimental while in others you hear a minor jazz influence. All in all, they created their own sound. The music is complex, shifting a lot throughout the track, many odd time signatures which alternate, use of a variety of sounds to create their style, and at times gets quite heavy (not in a classic metal kind). It is however a varied album and the tracks, while having a thread connecting between them in terms of their sound and spirit, each has its special place and identity and is different from the others.
When looking at the musicians, composers and bands that they state as their influence, one gets the idea of how they got to their present sound.

It is well worth the time to look over the new for interviews with the band and Jørgen and read about their influences, their early time together and about small anecdotes like the song titles.

The following is taken from the press release of Grindstone and it is one paragraph shortly giving the musical background of the band:
“The press dropped many names when trying to place Shining´s previous album on the musical map, from The Mars Volta and Slayer via King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra to Henry Cow, This Heat, Ornette Coleman, Ligeti and Messiaen. One thing they all agreed on was the striking originality of this young group who had gone through a radical transition from starting out as a postbop jazz quartet. With ”In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be A Monster” they tried to squeeze in as much as they could, but masterful editing and production from Kåre Chr. Vestrheim made it all stick together in a very convincing way. Vestrheim is also the producer of this album.”

I'm going to nip this in the bud. If you're going to spam links, can you at least write a couple of sentences telling us WTF it is?

So I picked up the Neuraxis album. Decent/good overall with scattered moments of brilliance. Can definitely see why this is a Velocity fave. I don't know, though. So many modern death metal bands these days sound so similar, it's hard to distinguish. I havn't heard the new Misery Index yet, but I'm having a hard time getting excited about it. Despite it's apparent brilliance.

Only death metal that has properly excited me this is the Origin and Coffins album.

Oh, and massive thanks for Intronaut.

Oh, and massive thanks for Intronaut.

ok, this is fusion-prog metal band, first album is waaay more fusion than second
catchy keyboards, recommended for prog-fans that like not only metal
yeah, mp3 posting is a crap, too much great bands dissolving without sales of albums, but much bands you can find only in internet in mp3 quality, sad but fact...
...Origin is a real band, agreed...
Chromium is groove metal / metalcore act from South Africa that wonder more and more with a quality metal bands in last times. Aztec Jade is prog metal band from USA, good persecutors of Dream Theater))
anyway all posts is powered with a links to a band page on metal-archives or something alike, you can follow it...
Pavement Ist Rad
Grindstone is a cool album, yeah.

Like a more restrained, more purely avant-garde version of Fantômas, Bungle, etc.
Saskadelphia
Shining is awesome. And they absolutely destroy live.

The new Misery Index is just a tiny bit better than the Neuraxis...but I heartily recommend both!

I have rediscovered Ire Works and it's been kicking my ass for the last week. I don't know why I thought it was such a noisy-abrasive freakout. I mean, I obviously prefer the accessible things like "Black Bubblegum" and "Milk Lizard," but the whole thing is pretty fucking cool.

"Milk Lizard" is best enjoyed FUCKING RIDICULOUSLY LOUD

Soundscape, have you heard the new Opus Dai album? The songs on myspace sound like they have potential.

yeah I know them..they recently changed singers and some other members left. Their 1st album is pretty good, esp for a debut. Definitely for people into dredg, fair to midland, karnivool, and the apex theory among others. But how good they will be now with the lineup changes I am not too optimistic. Chris Paul had a unique vocal-style that may not be easily replaced.

Yeah, the new guy has a bit of a Cedric Bixler thing going. Still, we'll see what happens.

hey..I finally got around to checking the new EP out..NOT BAD!..altho the singer he reminds me most of actually is original Fates Warning singer John Arch..and a little bit like Rob from Soundscape.

It inspired me to go back and listen to the O.H.M. mp3's I d/led like a year ago.
Saskadelphia
Amon Amarth was incredible tonight!!! What a great live band. Ensiferum was terrific as always. Belphegor was goofy. And I missed the Absence.

Do not miss this tour!

Lengsel is a progressive Unblack metal band that formed in 1995 in Norway. They released one album, called Solace, on Endtime Productions in 2000, which was subsequently licensed to Solid State Records for an American release. Their name means "longing" in Norwegian; the idea of longing for home is a prominent theme on their debut release.
Shortly after releasing "Solace", the band members changed the name to "Ganglion", and quickly departed from their black metal roots to a more rock oriented style, alienating many of their old fans in the process but creating a new fan base at the same time.
In 1999, guitarist Tor Glidje joined the band Extol on bass. The following year, Glidje switched over to guitar for Extol at the departure of another member and John Mjåland joined the band on bass. When the guitarist returned, Glidje left Extol, but Mjåland stayed as bassist. In 2004, both of Extol's guitarists left the band and were replaced by Glidje and Ole Sveen, effectively merging both members and music of Ganglion with Extol. Several Ganglion songs, recorded under the Ganglion moniker, were incorporated into the Extol repertoire. Thus, all three members of Lengsel/Ganglion are current members of Extol. The remaining members of Extol also played in Ganglion at one point or another, so the merge was very logical.
In 2006, while Extol was on break, a resurrected Lengsel recorded their second full-length album, entitled The Kiss, The Hope, and released it on the independent German label Whirlwind Records. It features more of a sludge/hardcore feel than the attitude rock of Ganglion, and has very little in common with Solace.

Sorry. I'll calm down now. But this album is really kicking my ass. I've had it since June or so, but didn't start listening to it much until the last few days. Magnificent. Vivian--if you haven't heard this, you should. It's like High on Fire meets Lamb of God meets all around bloody, brutal gloriousness.

Backwardslash/fowardslash guy--explain to me how this band could possibly have been boring live. Not sayin' you're wrong--I certainly haven't seen them play. But I can't imagine how this band could be boring.

And, Sask--glad to hear you got see Amon Amarth live. I've only seen one short set of theirs (opening for Gwar), but they were slayeriffic. Sadly, I probably won't be able to make it down to Chicago for their House of Blues show next Monday--but all you Chicago folks should.

Heh, yeah--no argument there. If you do end up going, don't miss Valient Thorr. Sillier and less metal than Municipal Waste, more like AC/DC on speed--but extremely fun live. Frontman Valient Himself has this great crazed preacher (from Venus) shtick that everyone should get to experience at least once.

dont ask me why, but i attempted to listen to the new IN THIS MOMENT cd this morning...
probably some of the most un-inspired garbarge i've heard in a while..
honestly reminded me of VIXEN..
really bad stuff...deleted immediately..

the singer is still pretty hot, though...

The new In This Moment album is really good. They completely went for a big 80s vibe, just totally dove in, no irony or self-awareness, and it works. The hooks are shamelessly huge. Big thumbs-up from me...but then again, I love 80s pop metal.

Another good, 80s-inspired band to check out is Sister Sin from sweden, I've been playing their new album a ton. Same circa-1985 vibe, but with more of a Girlschool/Warlock edge.

I've grown in 80's, but like its music very custom, pop-metal or so-called-hair-rock of 80's impressed me not, too much accents in image, scenic behavior, nothing or near in music...

if that's what they set out to do, they succeeded...

Maria must be a Gwen (NODOUBT) fan,eh?
she seems to sing through her lips the same way Gwen does...

If you haven't heard In the Kingdom of Kitsch... yet, you should. It's much more varied and exciting than I felt Grindstone was. I mean, really, if you just listen to "Goretex Weather Report" I'm sure anyone would be instantly converted.

Ha ha. Hard to believe, isn't it. It was really strange.... they just STOOD THERE...... occasionally the singer would put his fist in the air, but then they went back to standing in place....... The band had no chemistry. Each member did their piece, the music sounded good, but I might as well have been listening to the album.....

So, I'm pretty excited about tomorrow. I'm going to see Nachtmystium and Wolves in the Throne Room. As I often do, I was looking at the openers to see if they were any good. We've got our local piano-fronted thrash metallers, Silentist opening. Never seen 'em live, so it should be cool. I also stumbled upon another li'l metal band that I'd never heard of..... Ludicra. Holy F$#K!!!!!!!

These guys (or girls, actually) absolutely kill. They were getting a lot of love on this board a year or so ago. Anyone who is interested in some fantastic non-traditional black metal will be pleasantly surprised. I'd especially recommend Ludicra for any Agalloch fans in the group....

Ludicra is great... female vocals that aren't cheesy or gimmicky like Arch Enemy or something... just kickass.
