Listening to "Crystal Skull" on Mastodon's myspace site at the moment (after reading the Pitchfork review of the single, I have to admit)

Yikes, what a lousy track review. I have extremely high hopes for Blood Mountain.

After Leviathan, I'm expecting this to be crushing and awesome in equal measure. I love that album.

I've heard a couple of Arch Enemy songs on XM. That's the band with the chick singer, right? I wasn't thrilled with the vocals, but damn the music was hot! I need to hear more eventually.

One of the reasons I asked if there were any Arch Enemy fans was because for some weird reason, I got an extra copy of their new DVD. It's an excellent two-disc set, one disc has a concert + extras with a CRUSHING surround mix by Andy Sneap, and the other has videos and behind the scenes stuff. So if anyone's interested, PM me, and it's yours.* If there's a bunch of folks interested, I'll do a little draw or something.

* Offer open to only people with a minimum post count of, say, 100.

They're good at the melodic metalcore, that's for sure. Their guitarist Adam whatshisname seems to be producing everybody these days.

Got a nice surprise arrival today, that being the new Daughters album, and it's one of the most shocking transformations I've heard from a band in years. Far, far less crazy than Canada Songs, and instead of screaming there's a more spoken-style delivery with touches of singing. Grind fans seem to be divided over this stylistic shift, but I think the newfound restraint works brilliantly. Right up there with The Smackdown as the best grind CD I've heard in 2006. I'd like to hear what williamtell has to say about this release.

Here's a track: "Fiery"

They're touring with Pelican and Nachtmystium, which is a pretty killer triple bill.

Yes, I'm UK. I do, however, have a fine DVD player that can play anything (I do love those semi-annual Deep Discount DVD sales~!), so if you're willing to send then no probs...

Listening to 'Fiery' now. Interesting stuff, and the first I think I've heard from the band. Guitars are very Dillinger, and the vocals are entertaining enough. I miss this style of singing ever since the demise of Kiss It Goodbye (does anyone know what Tim Singer's doing now?). Ta for the link.

The previous Daughters album was friggin' insane, Dillinger x 10, ten songs in 11 minutes, with some of the wildest drumming you'll ever hear. I'm glad they took another direction, because they went about as far as they could go with the more straightforward grind sound.

New Trivium:

"Detonation"

Not too shabby. They get so much heat for their Metallica devotion (they're the most hated metal band among metal fans, next to Avenged Sevenfold), but I like it. Very Ride the Lightning. The chorus is a little meh, but I'm glad they've abandoned the screaming.

but damn, if the new Merrimack album is way better. They're from France, they do straightforward black metal, but the production on this CD is quite stellar, and the songs are well-arranged...monotony never sets in.

Finally got around to hearing this one (thanks again Sask!) and wow you weren't kidding. This disc is phenomenal, definitely worth checking out if you're into black metal at all. Stellar production and songwriting. This could very well sneak ahead of Enlsaved and Drudkh for metal album of the year for me.

I had a hunch you'd like it. I was listening to the new ones by Gorgoroth and Satyricon at the same time, and they couldn't measure up to Merrimack. The production on the album is excellent, and musically, there's a lot going on.

Merrimack's such a weird name for a band. It keeps reminding me of Lowell Mass., as depicted by Jack Kerouac.

Just got back from Sounds of the Underground. Not as good as last year's, but it still had its moments. Like a year ago, the Canadian dates are all indoors, which was good, cos it was a scorcher outside today.

The show had probably the biggest anticlimax I've seen in 22 years of concertgoing. In Flames absolutely mopped the floor with As I Lay Dying. It wasn't even funny...in fact, it was kind of embarrassing. Everyone was there for In Flames. The floor was packed, everyone was singing all the words, the band had a killer light show, it was all great. The setlist was havy on Reroute/Soundtrack/Clarity, but since I'm one of the few fans who loves those albums, I was quite happy:
Pinball Map
Leeches
Cloud Connected
Trigger
Graveland
Come Clarity
The Quiet Place
Take This Life
My Sweet Shadow

When In Flames finished, lots of people left, and between AILD's songs, it was dead silent. Nobody but the 100 in front cared at all. They're a B level band at best, and have a few good songs ("The Darkest Nights" and "Confined"), but there's no way they can headline a tour like this, and it was painfully obvious. The vocals are far too one-dimensional, and the singer was a pompous ass, standing on the riser doing Christ poses. dry.gif

Behemoth was phenomenal ("Conquer All" and "Chant For Eschaton 2000" were godly), and I loved Cannibal Corpse. Holy hell, can Corpsegrinder scream...they're so much better live. The new songs killed, and "Fucked With a Knife" (which was dedicated to the ladies laugh.gif ) and "Devoured by Vermin" were awesome. Trivium try way too hard, the poor kids tongue.gif...their new song is so much better than the older stuff, though, and I have high hopes for the album. B;ack Dahlia Murder was surprisingly good. And GWAR was GWAR. They brought out Gor-Gor this time. That was my fourth time seeing GWAR in 21 months. The shtick is fun, but tends to get old over and over again. Does anyone ever know what songs they're playing? Does anyone even care?

A question: who are the bigger fucking idiots, GWAR fans, or those hardcore karate dancing twits?

Interesting departure. Typical Maiden arrangement, but an understated chorus. Solid melody all the way through. Not exceptional, but still good.

What is exceptional, though, is the new All That Remains album. Tight Scandinavian-inspired stuff, with some very strong melodies, great clean vocals, but more robust than the usual emo singing young American bands do. Every bit as good as the new Scar Symmetry, this could very well be the metalcore album of the year.

I've been listening to a lot of black metal this year, and Agalloch definitely makes the best use of the BM vox, in my opinion. They don't make it sound as cheesy for some reason.

Got the new Brand New Sin album today, and it seemed to fall flat after the first listen. Though they do a song with Pete Steele that's arguably the best thing the band has ever done.

And the new Amon Amarth is KILLER. Better than the last album. You've got to love metal songs about Viking warfare.
