I've really been enjoying Static Tensions over the past few weeks. It's creeping up my EOY and is defintely top 20 at this point. "Unknown Awareness" is really an incredible post-Kyuss psychedelic/ stoner metal anthem

Here's the promo version of the Shrinebuilder album (which does not include the last track for some retarded reason). I like this a lot but it's funny that it sounds exactly like you'd expect an album from these four dudes to sound. I mean it's completely obvious who wrote what parts and everything. Still, pretty good album.

I wouldn't disagree with it being better than their last. But as much as I enjoy their technical prowess, they don't change all that much stylistically. Even the % of egyptian ritual or middle eastern instrumentation and moods, while they certainly are there, they don't emphasize them as much as they could. But perhaps that's not what they want to do.

I'm at work, so I haven't had a chance to search. News was from a reliable source/HOF megafan, so I believe it. I'm sure one of the metal threaders can track it down.... If not, I'll see if I can get him to upload a copy later.

HOF's myspace says they started tracking the album on 9/4. It also says they did a lot of pre-production for the album. So either they banged it out quick or whatever's floating around is pretty rough.

I'd be pretty surprised if High on Fire's next album leaked already
Friday, September 04, 2009 HIGH ON FIRE ENTER STUDIO, BEGIN TRACKING NEW ALBUM World-renowned power trio HIGH ON FIRE has commenced work on its long-awaited, fifth studio album and follow-up to 2007’s Death is This Communion. The esteemed band just completed pre-production with producer Greg Fidelman (Metallica, Slayer, Johnny Cash) and has now entered The Pass Studios in Los Angeles with the goal of capturing “the ultimate High on Fire experience.” The new HIGH ON FIRE album is slated for an early 2010 release via E1 Music.
Brand new images of HIGH ON FIRE hard at work on its new album can be viewed at the following locations HOF studio pic 1, HOF studio pic 2, HOF studio pic 3. The stills were brought to life by photographer Andrew Stuart.
“Pre-production on the new record went great!” states HIGH ON FIRE drummer Des Kensel. “It really gave us the chance to make some last minute adjustments before we started tracking. We've never been able to do that before and know this will make a huge difference overall. We can't believe the way everything has fallen into place for this record! Hopefully our fans will be excited as we are once they hear the new material.”
it appears they have a live album that is being re-released called "Live from the Relapse Contamination Festival" that was/will-be released sometime in 2009.

I've been listening to the new Baroness a LOT. It didn't thrill me at all at first but it's really a great album, I can't say I would want to listen to any of the songs on their own (especially since a lot of them segue together), but as an album it's a wonderful little journey. I love the almost-cheesy retroness of some of it, especially "The Steel That Sleeps The Eye." Unexpected Heretix Favourite.
The Nile is punishing. I didn't hear the last one but I have In Their Darkened Shrine which I thought was just okay. But this one is technically impressive AND enjoyable. The vocals in particular are a strong point.
Can't wait to hear the Immortal.

Yeah, that Baroness is real good. Have it in the car and don't know the track names, soooo: tracks 1&2, 4&5, 7, 9, & 11&12 are great. Track 8 is a chore because of the White Zombiesque utterances throughout. Don't know about 3 or 10, but have a feeling they're just segue tracks?

New Baroness is definitely great. I understand the 'album' talk, but the songs have been popping up on my iPod randomly during my run and they work fine as stand-alone songs (though those couple of minute-long tracks are basically excuses to take a breather and a few mouthfuls of water before picking up the pace again). Not sure what most of the titles and track numbers are yet, but "Jake Leg" is a winner.

The first 7", Volume One, "8", features two newly recorded tracks. On Side A, the title track "8" continues the spacey hard-rock sound established on their classic albums Pink and Smile, building from a mono, lo-fi wall of feedback into a ripping, slab of lush vocals, crunchy guitar and thunderous drums. Things get switched up on Side B with "ねえエヴリワン/Hey Everyone", a chewy bit of power-pop bubblegum that sees the band mining a much lighter source for their sound. It's a reminder that the most daring thing this band can do is record something so straight-forward it could easily be misconstrued as "alt-pop". Don't fret its still got a dark core and is unmistakably Boris!

The new Nile has some absolutely wonderful songs on it. "Hittite Dung Incantation" is just spectacular. As good as "Sacrifice Unto Sebec" in terms of memorable riffs and hooks and shit. This one here is also quite fun!

I enjoy this record. Nothing new/groundbreaking for them, but I really don't care. Delivers everything you'd expect it to; if you liked Immortal before, you'll still like them now; if you didn't care, this won't convert you. I was worried when I read interviews where Abbath talked about a return to the Blizzard Beasts sort of sound, which would have been a step backwards for them. It's not as cleanly produced as the last few, but still retains their epic sound and isn't self-consciously shitty sounding.
And, I'm sure there will be awesome new pics of the band soon to be photoshopped the world over, a definite bonus.
