It's so good. I'm so happy...it's so satisfying to find out the one band you've been a fan of the longest is still capable of great music. It's their darkest, most focused work in many years. Low on the "Wicker Man"/"Rainmaker" style of single-worthy tunes, but that Kerrang review is right, it's like the incident a year ago lit a fire under their asses, cos man, do they mean business.

There's so much variety, I don't know where to start. So here's a quick rundown of killer albums you might want to try (if you haven't heard them before):
Agalloch - Pale Folklore, The Mantle
Arsis - A Diamond For Disease
Diamond Head - Lightning For the Nations
The Gathering - How to Measure a Planet (this one is going to make my 95-04 top ten)
Moonspell - Memorial
Orphaned Land - Mabool
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
Razor - Evil Invaders
Ugh, there's so much good stuff, and so much I've never heard!

Those downloads from that site Sask posted seemed ludicrously slow (like 3 hours to download half an album slow ... and I have Cable internet!), but maybe I'll try again.
Just finished my first listen to the Maiden.
Wow. This is definitely not an album for those attracted to the more concise, anthemic side of the band, that's for sure. So for folks like Deej who were blown away by my single disc "Anthems" mix of a few years back, stay far away: there isn't a "Wicker Man," "The Trooper," "Run To The Hills," or "Wrathchild"-like song in sight.
That said, this is incredible. After the looser, more relaxed/fun approach of Dance of Death (which opened with a COUNT-OFF for God's sake!), the band is downright furious and mean on this one. Practically every song still has that trademark huge Iron Maiden chorus, but this is a lot more complex/heavy album than their other post-reunion material. And Dickinson is just absolutely spitting FIRE throughout ... probably his best vocal work on a Maiden album since rejoining. Its definitely a grower, which Dance of Death was for me as well, but on first listen, I think I might grow to like this one even more than that or Brave New World.
And, yeah, it seems cliche by now to proclaim a 21st Century Maiden album as "the best they've done since their `golden era,' but damnit if that's not true! This definitely excites me more for the show in October ... I bet this stuff will KILL live.

Agreed on all counts. "The Longest Day" is awesome...right up there with "Paschendale".
There was a lot of debate about whether the album would suffer from not being mastered, but the raw mix complements the music nicely.
This is the kind of great album that will have me cursing myself for not blowing my cash to see the October tour. Maiden always plays a lot fo new stuff on their tours, and I certainly wouldn't complain if they did four or five songs off the new disc. If there'd been a Vancouver date, I would have gone there for sure.

So I'm going record shopping after work today, and a need a few solid metal recommendations. Haven't bought a metal record in a while that just absolutely, positively kicked my behind (well, WITTT was great, but still...).
I'm in the market for really heavy, riff-laden rock solid metal-metal. It doesn't have to be new, either- I'm actually pretty weak on 90's metal outside of the usual suspects (Prong, Pantera, Testament).
What should Vivian pick up and why?

I guess it depends on whether you want old stuff or new stuff, whether you're looking for clean vox or death vox, metalcore or no, etc. The new Strapping Young Lad fits the bill, I think. It is, truly, really heavy, riff-laden rock solid metal-metal. The new Amon Amarth isn't out until October, but it's a fun one. The new Unearth album is very good metalcore.

Other Jesu releases are also on the horizon : Aurora Borealis will be releasing a limited edition 12" vinyl only EP featuring 2 new experimental Jesu compositions entitled 'Sun Down' b/w 'Sun Rise', each song is approx. 18 minutes in length. Both songs feature Justin and Diarmuid only. This is mixed, mastered and with the label. Release date TBA.
Currently being mixed is a limited edition split 12" vinyl EP with Eluvium, this release is a joint venture between Hydra Head and Temporary Residence, with 2000 copies being issued by each label. This features 3 new Jesu compositions, recorded by Justin only. Release date TBA.

Justin has been invited to join Sunn0))) as a member of the group on their upcoming October 2006 U.K and Ireland tour. Yet again details TBA very soon...

Nah, their songs are long enough for what they do. Though actually, about half the tracks on Terrifyer
are over 90 seconds. My favorite song on the album ("Towering Flesh") is over 3 minutes long in fact.
