Yeah, I just thought I'd post my initial thoughts, as I usually do here. That one song that was released (posted a couple pages back) is a good encapsulation of the rest of the album. DEP's in a nice little groove.

One other thing I'll say, it's a lot less proggy noodling and acoustic, and a helluvalot more riffage. Same producer as the new Slayer, and very similar tone.

I'm pretty sure this thing is going to completely blow my mind (though I must say, I really loved the "proggy" "noodling acoustic" passages on DITC). But yeah, everything I've heard about it is exactly the type of development I want to hear about- the focused riffage, the aggression, the darkness of the overall song collection. Check out the band's official press release regarding the album, claiming that
Snakes for the Divine will be:
"High On Fire's magnum opus, capturing every nuance of the legendary band's ongoing musical progression and evolution into one of heavy music's all-time greats. Sharper, faster and darker than anything the group has ever recorded, 'Snakes for the Divine' is an unrelenting tour de force, showcasing cult guitar hero Matt Pike's utterly unique and inventive musicianship and the band's epic, thundering sound. Premium production by Fidelman - the man who produced Slayer's 'World Painted Blood' and is mixing the upcoming Metallica live album - boosts High On Fire's strength and power while blackened lyrical tales of ancient wars, frozen planets and doomed societies emerge from Pike's bellowing barks and throaty war cries. From the moment the leviathan-like title track explodes to kick off the album, it is immediately evident that High On Fire is determined to push modern heavy metal into new and uncharted realms."
Also- live snippets of the songs being unveiled earlier this fall promise thunder.
Check out "Frost Hammer" live in Canada from October

This isn't the Torche I remember from the Meanderathal record (which i wasn't crazy about). This seems kind of more Neurosis-influenced type stuff than what I remember on Meanderthal. This hits pretty hard - i'll have to give these guys another shot. I dig the tribal sounding percussion too. Sounds to me like a different band.

New split release by The Bastard Noise and The Endless Blockade. This shit is blowing my mind. Absolutely crushing. Click cover for the goods.
If you like it go over to
20 Buck Spin and buy it. They're a great label who deserve your support. Only $7.99 on CD and $10.99 on LP.

20 Buck Spin is proud to release "The Red List", a split album between two titans of the North American underground, Bastard Noise and The Endless Blockade. This long awaited and much anticipated album was first hatched in idea form on the occasion of a show between both bands in 2007. Finally more than two years later, "The Red List" is ready to be unleashed.
"The Red List" marks a huge turning point for US noise legends Bastard Noise. The harsh noise and power electronics they are well known and revered for here is mixed into a foundation of brutal modern hardcore with progressive tendencies that will cause the mind to wander into worlds yet ventured. Recalling their seminal past ties with Man Is The Bastard, the band turns to a "music-based" direction for the first time under the name Bastard Noise since their inception in 1991. The exemplary bass-playing ("four steel girders") of Eric Wood certainly recalls MITB in their heyday, with recent addition and master drummer/percussionist Danny Walker (Intronaut/Phobia) providing the perfect foundation for Wood's brutal technicality. Long-time Bastard Noise/MITB member W.T. Nelson keeps the custom-built electronics sound of the band planted firmly in the present.
Toronto's The Endless Blockade return following 2008's 20 Buck Spin released LP Primitive and 2009's split EP with Agoraphobic Nosebleed (Relapse). Their primary contribution here is the 14+ minute modern power-violence epic "Deuteronomy", a track that crosses all spectrums of hardcore/true crucial punk madness. Additional unconventional sound elements are utilized, never once pausing their critical attack on the only living species that deserves (and has earned) its own extinction. Fans of the bands Primitive LP will not be disappointed. Additionally two interesting remix tracks from the Primitive sessions are included, the first remix by modern composer Noah Creshevsky, and the second a brutal harsh noise blast by Canadian audial assaulter The Rita.
"The Red List" is now ready to explode the minds of the humanoid "anti-sheep" to its greatest capabilities. Both The Endless Blockade and Bastard Noise have worked closely together to make this "awareness-based" audio-violent offering the sickest it can be. Vinyl version on Deep Six Records. This CD version contains material from both bands not included on the LP.

True words. This album may sound exactly the way it looks. On another note, I thought I would rectify what appears to be a major injustice in this thread and post Shining's new album - Blackjazz. It is truly different to anything they have done so far, lots of vocals, but still exceptional. These guys know what's up. Grutle Kjellson from Enslaved guests on vocal duties.
Very clearly not my link. Please make sure you purchase this. It is beyond worth it.

That's great! I did too! I went there last year and I'm still considering going to this one but it's kinda tough for me. This fest is on the 13th and I already purchased the tix for Mastodon & Metallica here in Puerto Rico which is the 14th. Not that I like what Metallica is doing with themselves these days but for Mastodon (although I did see them last year it's like a triumph for me that they step on this island.

I was thinking to myself today: what are my five favorite bands in metal today?
I came up with the following:
1) High on Fire
2) Mastodon
3) Meshuggah
4) Slayer
5) Gojira
I surpised myself most with Gojira, but really, the more I listen to those last two albums, the more convinced I am that they belong in this elite group. I commend those two albums to anyone who hasn't yet heard them. They're incredible.
I felt bad about Opeth, DEP, Strapping Young Lad, Neurosis, Burst and Deftones, who are in my short list. Silly exercise in listmaking, I know, but I'd be interested to see what some of you other metal dudes reckon.

1. Mastodon
2. Boris
3. Neurosis
4. Converge
