Call me old-fashioned, but shouldn't "songs" be at least 90 seconds long? I like Pig Destroyer as much as the next guy. Sometimes, though, I wish they'd link a few of their brief snippets together for a full-length song or three.

You're old-fashioned.

Thanks for Voivod. It's pretty good..

Requests:
Paradise Lost
Napalm Death
Satyricon (Anyone have Now, Diabolical? I've been trying to find that one for forever!)

Not trying to mooch to much, so anyone have any requests?

Satyricon (Anyone have Now, Diabolical? I've been trying to find that one for forever!)

I have it on CD. S'okay. I got the Satyricon and Gorgoroth at the same time that I got the new Merrmiack and Keep of Kalessin albums, and those ones were just so much better. I really should Now, Diabolical another spin.

Heh, the Satyricon guys were slamming Green Carnation in Decibel for not being kvlt enough or whatever. Comical, considering Green Carnation have grown way past black metal for quite some time now (and are a much better band for it).

The new Blind Guardian is so goofy, but I really like most of it. They're going to get slagged for going commercial, but damn, if "Another Stranger Me" isn't world class power metal.

I can probably get this up in the morning. Start the upload process now, post it when I wake up.

Be a little specific re: Napalm Death. I have most of their records. You looking for early grindcore stuff, mid-period death metal stuff, or latterday grindcore/death material? Or the new record, perhaps?

Maybe I should bump the metal y'all send the thing thread again so this thread doesn't get so burdened with uploads, requests, etc. I dunno.

I'd prefer the early stuff. And the new one if you have it.

That might be a good idea...don't need this to degenerate into yet anoyher y'all send the thing request thread.

The Napalm Death is very good, continuing right where the last one left off. No surprise there. I have to see the lyrics, though, cos that's where Barney's at his best.

Yesterday I got a MySpace friend request from a U.K. metal band called To-Mera. Normally, since I'm a 31-year-old married man (SOOOOO not the myspace demo), I only get requests from spammers. Seems this band actually did do their homework though, so I accepted and checked out the two songs on their page.

They're like a strange combination of Lacuna Coil and Dream Theater with big chunks of Opeth thrown in only without the clean/growly vocal exchange. Female fronted goth/thrash/prog metal that really goes all over the place, but not bad. Its just strange to hear arpeggios and time changes in the "pretty girl with pretty voice" metal genre, but they may be on to something. Curious to see if they make any sort of splash. I may have to check out the record once its finished/comes out.

I got this album in the mail yesterday! What a cool surprise. And oh my, is it good...

So if you're going to Gigantour, be sure to get there early--seriously early. Show yesterday started at 4:00. With eight bands on the bill, I arrived at 7:00 and Opeth was already playing!!! 5 bands in less than 3 hours, wtf?!

More surprising was that Opeth went on before Lamb of God. Both were great but come on, Opeth is in a class by itself. Traditionalist behind me kept yelling during their set, "quit your pussy metal!" lol

Major pyrotechnics during Megadeth's set. They sounded great...Mustaine's in top shape, played a new song plus a nice mix of hits. They were done by 11:00. And, it really is silly to call them Megadeth when it's only Dave left.

I'd just seen Tool at this same venue on Sunday, so another shock was the comparative emptiness of the arena last night. Then again, it was the most people I'd ever seen at a 'Deth show, so it's just too bad they didn't book a smaller venue.

Well, Lamb of God is becoming one of the most popular metal bands in America, so I can see why Mustaine put them higher on the bill. It's a smart way to sell more tickets. But I agree, Opeth are the finest band on Gigantour, no question. It'd be fun to see Megadeth, LoG, Opeth, and Arch Enemy in such quick succession. Talk about an embarrassment of riches.

I take it you missed Into Eternity, then? They're local boys, and on their new album they've finally fulfilled the promise they've hinted at in the past. They have a new singer who sounds like a cross between Rob Halford, Udo Dirkschneider, and David Wayne.

Anyone interested in some first-rate death metal should give this new album a listen:

The Discovery Channel probes the dark side of death metal in a one-hour documentary aptly titled "Death Metal Music", which is scheduled to air tonight at 10 p.m. (with a repeat airing at 2:00 a.m. tomorrow) (see schedule at this location).

The film, which was produced by the BBC and which aired in the U.K. last November under the title "Death Metal Murders", investigates the possible links between death metal and a series of gruesome crimes from California to Italy. With exclusive access, the film tells the inside story of a violent satanic cult in Milan. Interviewed for the documentary were several musicians, including Glen Benton of DEICIDE, Necrobutcher of Norwegian black metal band MAYHEM, and self-confessed Swedish Satanists DISSECTION.

Thanks for the heads up--I'm definitely going to have to see this.

And speaking of death metal--thanks for posting the Deicide album, Sask. I listened to it while I was working on some mind-numbing crap today, and it's the first brutal death metal I've heard that I've really liked.

Speaking of which, Glen Burton was front and center in the propaganda piece I posted about above. What a load of shit. I didn't realize this, but apparently heavy metal (mostly focused on death/black metal) is all Satanists and murderers. About 40 minutes in, they allowed an opposing viewpoint - a Stanford professor - who explained quite well that it's not the music, it's the fraction of people who are fucked up and susceptible to the music that do these things. And they gave him about 14 seconds of air time.

Oh, and apparently Slayer is a death metal band!

What I really didn't like was how they twisted the main story of that Fabio kid to make it look like his involvement with the occult/Satanism lead to his death, and then in the final segment, you find out he was killed because he had mocked the Satanic beliefs of his other band members. He didn't buy into it! He was exactly what 99.5% of all metal listeners are - dedicated to the music, heavily into it - but not so far into it that the fantasy became the reality. If anything, that little fact that they so conveniently withheld until the end completely disproved everything they tried to sell in the first 50 minutes.

And of course, they brought up Mayhem, but mainly in passing. The rest of the time, they were busy interviewing parents of kids killed by death metal bands like Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Pantera (yes, they named those bands and lumped them in with the others).

Basically, it was crap. I would have laughed more, except the more I thought about it, the more pissed I got.
Saskadelphia
New Trivium here.

Very, very good album, but young master Heafy once again is trying a bit too hard. Those lyrics are awful. One chorus actually goes, "For your honor you will slaughter every one of your daughters."

Um, perhaps this band was better off when we didn't know what the fuck they were saying.

Interesting comments on that site about the vocal style. I can see the generation gap. I much MUCH prefer non-screamed vocals. And the reference to Avenged Sevenfold was not surprising. They seem to be the lightning rod/dividing line between fans of melodic/less harsh vocals and those how like screaming/death vocals. AX7 appears to be the Winger of the new millenium of metal.

Yeah, it's really amazing. I was shocked by how many teenagers were angry about Triviums abandoning the screaming. Durn kids.

Back to the anti-metal thing, here's a brilliant account of today's snowballing "metal made the guy kill people" movement in Canada...

Cool news about the upcoming KISS dvd set Kiss-ology (1974-77), out on Halloween:

QUOTE
So, what will be on this six-hour DVD set then? According to the trailer, it includes "five infamous television appearances" (but — in some sort of sad KISS tradition — not complete as not all performed songs on "In Concert", "The Midnight Special" and "The Paul Lynde Halloween Special" are included!), four complete concerts and "never-before-seen live footage." All digitally restored video and 5.1 audio mix, and with liner notes from the band. The complete shows are: San Francisco '75 (January 31), Detroit '76 (January 26), Tokyo '77 (April 2) and Houston '77 (September 2). Other bits and pieces include the band's performance on "The Mike Douglas Show" in April of '74, the 1975 promo clips for "C'mon And Love Me" and "Rock And Roll All Nite" and the band's appearance on the English TV show "So It Goes" from August 21, 1976. This "definitive KISS video anthology" is presented by VH1 Classic, who will air the special "Hanging With... KISS" around the time of release.

Just returned from seeing Queensryche in Chicago.

Highly enjoyable show ... I doubt I'll ever get the chance to hear BOTH Operation: Mindcrime albums in their entirety live again, so that was obviously a huge draw. The staging was fairly downplayed...the plot mainly played out on a video screen, with a small section of the stage devoted to "sets" (a table and a desk, really). There were a few actors supplementing the band, but most of the "acting" as it were was carried out by Geoff Tate and Pamela Moore (yes, they even had costume changes). Yes, it seems kinda silly, and there were times Tate REALLY overdid it (I almost laughed as he was strapped into a straitjacket and taken off stage in a wheelchair during "Eyes of a Stranger"), but it was pretty well done, and the band sounded great. Tate's a bit puffy, but can still belt it out really well.

And seeing the stage show definitely cleared up a few things for me, particularly the until now amorphous ending of O:M II. The "Who Killed Mary?" question is pretty definitively answered once and for all in a dialouge scene that occurs during "Electric Requiem" (an exchange which is NOT on the original album, mind you). However, it does fly in the face of the "your rosary wrapped around your neck" line in "Eyes of a Stranger."

My only complaint is there was some inconsistency between the video screen stuff and what we saw on stage...during O:M II, Tate is portraying Nikki on stage and in the videos (a younger actor is used for the original album), but in the videos, Tate is bearded ... and he isn't on stage. My wife was confused as to who the guy with the beard was. A minor oops, I guess. (And Geoff Tate bearded = an absolute ringer for Ricky Gervais. I kid you not.)

And, no, Ronnie James Dio wasn't there. "The Chase" was canned, pretty much (Dio appears on the video screen singing). Tate wasn't even on stage, though the band was playing.

In all though, a pretty good show. I left before the encore, so I couldn't even begin to tell you what crappy non-O:M material they were playing. I wanted to get the fuck out of Dodge before I heard a single note of "Silent Lucidity."

It certainly was. I almost forgot to mention: during "Revolution Calling," Tate held a sign that read "Somebody Give Bush a Blowjob so we can impeach him." Got a positive response from the crowd. And tate was wearing a wireless mic through the entire show...you know, like the kind Madonna uses.

Someone posed this question somewhere on this board a month or so ago, but I forget where. Was it here? Anyway, Blackwater Park and My Arms, Your Hearse are well worth picking up. Might want to try downloading the song "Deliverance", it's one of their best, and was the first Opeth song I really got into. Damnation is a really cool mellow record. Not metal at all, really.

Speaking of Opeth, the special edition of Ghost Reveries is finally coming out on Halloween after numerous delays. It's a good one:

Disc 2: 'Beyond Ghost Reveries' - A 40 Minute Documentary, Music Video For 'The Grand Conjuration', 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of Ghost Reveries.

Seconded. The early albums are a bit more brutal in their approach/production, but still have the elements that make Opeth so special. Still...Blackwater Park was their best album ... up to Ghost Reveries, so I'd start there. I need to give the early records another spin or two soon, I think.

Blackwater Park is the obvious next move. You could also do worse than picking up Deliverance, which is a more nuanced BP-II of sorts.
