New Cave In album is great. Existing fans won't be disappointed. As heavy as they've ever been but Brodsky manages to bring the 60's psych/beatles influences evident in his side projects into the fold more successfully than ever before as well.
Sounds even more like the first half an album than King of Limbs did though...

The handful of hardcore-ish songs on the new Cave-In bore me to tears. But when it gets proggy and the clean vox kick in, it's incredible.

Fucking Heshers, how do they work?
I wonder if people from the 2040's are going to retroactively make up new terms to mock people from this decade? lol
Swedish progressive metallers OPETH will release their tenth album, "Heritage", on September 20 via Roadrunner Records. The CD was produced by OPETH vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and was recorded earlier this year at Atlantis studios (formerly Metronome studios) in Stockholm. Mixing duties were handled by Steven Wilson (PORCUPINE TREE) and Åkerfeldt. Longtime collaborator Travis Smith also worked with Åkerfeldt to create, design and execute the album's artwork.
"Heritage" will be released in several configurations that will certainly incite the interest of OPETH's legion of fans, known for their passion for collecting and collectibles. The album will be released as a standard version; as a special edition loaded with extras; as a box set exclusive to the Roadrunner and the band's own official Omerch webstore; and as a double LP. There is something for every OPETH fan, thanks to this variety of options.
Commented Åkerfeldt, "It will be our 10th album/observation. I dig it; we all do. In fact, it feels like I've been building up to write for and participate on an album like this since I was 19."
Åkerfeldt went a little deeper and described the music contained within "Heritage", saying, "It's quite intense at times in some 'old' murky way, and quite beautiful and stark at times, if I may say so myself.
"It's obvious I'm going to say nice things about it since I wrote, basically, the whole piece, but I guess it will raise a few eyebrows and it certainly is an acquired taste.
"I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record.
"I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like.
"If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be OPETH, but it's different from the stuff we've done before.
"I've listened a lot to ALICE COOPER for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like 'No More Mr. Nice Guy'.
"I hope you'll like it once you hear it."
"Heritage" track listing:
01. Heritage 02. The Devil's Orchard 03. I Feel The Dark 04. Slither 05. Nepenthe 06. Haxprocess 07. Famine 08. The Lines In My Hand 09. Folklore 10. Marrow Of The Earth
OPETH will embark on a seven-week, headline tour of the U.S. Dates will be announced imminently.

Just came into this thread to post that.
At first I hated it because the heads-in-tree thing reminded me of that Creed album cover, but Akerfeldt has always had a great sense of humor in concert and interviews. This just seems like a big tongue-in-cheek tribute to the ridiculous 70s prog album covers that have always been an influence in Opeth.
Also, the head falling from the tree is the keyboardist that quit the band about a month ago, and the skulls on the ground represent each of the former Opeth band members throughout the years.

Indeed they do.
Seen them twice this year already, both times for free. Noisy but with insane solos and rock star moves. And fucking awesome drumming. Bringing people to their shows is a lot of fun.

(cribbed from a thread I started on these guys a few months back)
"They trade in sort of droney, shoegazey space rock with lots of metallic overtones, Sonic Youth/ Swervedriver/ MBV mixed with sweeping Hawkwind and Stooges sensibilities. It's a big wash from a power trio that sort of sound like all of these references and none of them. And they are really tight as a band, the interplay between the squelchy lead guitar and bass is ridiculous, the drummer (Kid Millions from Oneida) absolutely kills on a tom-heavy shuffle.
I downloaded the new album the next day and was gravely disappointed. Unimpressive boring as fuck dime-a-dozen droney/shoegaze. I hope it will open up on repeated listens, but my intital impression is that this is a band that simply doesn't translate well on record.
But live? Fuck me. Best band I've seen in ages. RIYL: early, Transmissions From the Satellite Heart-era Lips, Swervedriver, Earthless, Sonic Youth, even White Stripes in places."

Yeah, their "songs" leave a lot to be desired. Even live, it often occurs to me that they sound like the kinds of things that could have been written in about five minutes. Yet somehow, the sheer power of the performances tip them over the edge of potential non-awesomeness into pure awesomeness.
I've gathered that a lot of the albums are pretty by numbers psych drone stuff that's done with more personality by much better groups, but I really like the collaboration with Gnod that came out last year. For a record that's really just a bunch of people jamming out, it's about as good as modern-day groovy driving krautrock type shit gets.

Anyone ever listen to Forgotten Tomb? I guess they used to be pretty grim, but this album is fairly poppy. Reminds me a bit of old Katatonia, but with more of a black metal feel. Maybe Enslaved is a better comparison since there are actual guitar solos and such.... Fun album either way.

Looking forward to seeing Origin and Abysmal Dawn next week, they're always great. Both their new albums are really good, too. We don't get Hate Eternal, Rutan takes every fifth day off, so that's a shame. I'm not into Vital Remains.

The new Tombs is great, so much better than their last two. Khann's Erode is well worth checking out, it's KEN Mode-ish noise metal. And as mentioned above, the new Orgin gets a huge thumbs-up. Love the new Melvins live CD, too. On the trad metal front, Hell's Human Remains is quickly becoming one of my 2011 faves, and the new CDs by In Solitude and Portrait are very rewarding if you love Mercyful Fate.
Oh, and Devin Townsend's Deconstruction is NUTS. In a good way. And this is comnig from someone who greatly prefers SYL to his solo stuff.

Hate Eternal shouldn't have had to follow Abysmal Dawn. Picked up the latter's new cd last night; and yeah, everything Origin played from Entity sounded swell. Great that the new crew was able to pick up where the old one left off.

Have you Bay Area folks heard Futur Skullz, the dubiously named metal-punk thing featuring former members of Weakling, the Fucking Champs, and Facedowninshit? Their new album is out today and it's pretty cool. Loaded with plenty of robust Vivian/velocity riffage:
YOB on Friday! Possibly Red Fang Saturday if I decide to go to the East End Block Party, which is a daytime event.
On another note, I gave Yakuza's Way of the Dead a spin today. Always forget how fantastic that album is.

I saw Sacred Reich last night. The openers were pretty great: I really dug Cross Examination, and Jungle Rot were ok, but that has a lot to do with the fact that C.E.'s thrash revival is more my speed (btw, I hate that thrash has to be revived. Can't it just be?).
Anyway, Sacred Reich were fantastic. I've only seen them once, almost 20 years ago to the date, so I was stoked to get another opportunity to see them. And let me start by saying that I have mixed feelings about reunion shows. They can be a sad reminder of of how old we are, and a backwards glance thorugh rose-colered glasses at "better" times, which really doesn't do us any good.
I was afraid we might be going down that route when Phil Rind walked on stage, literally about 100 lbs heavier than the last time I saw him. He hit up his asthma inhaler about two songs into the set.
That said, this show was anything but going-through-the-motions. Rind, despite his asthma, had tons of energy and sounded great (plus his stage banter was pretty fucking hilarious, a rarity for any show). They played about fifteen songs, almost exclusively (I think) from Surf Nicaragua, American Way, and Ignorant.
So yeah, great show. I think the reality with some reunions is that many (most?) bands are forced to break up, not because of yoko and artistic diffferences, but because real life just gets in the way. But it's great for us fans when friends like the guys in SR can get together for a one-off and play the music they love.
