Great interview- really thoughtful questions. Gives me a much better sense of what to expect- when you'd described it earlier as "less polished," I was a little worried (I love the clinical sheen of obZen), but I gather it's not a dirtier or sloppier sound so much as a warmer, more organic, groovy brutality. And that is cause for celebration.
Probably my second most anticipated release of 2012 alongside Gojira Chapter 5.

Yeah, great interview Sask. I can't wait for this monster.

What did you guys think of that All Pigs Must Die record from last year? I don't recall seeing discussion about it here. I just heard a track and it sounds great. They're using the drummer from Converge and it was recorded by Ballou---not sure how I missed it.

My Meshuggah interview is up now. The album's still great too, I've been playing it a ton.
Yeah, thanks Sask, I am definitely feeling like total Meshuggah immersion is in order. Can't wait for the tour too--with Baroness & Decapitated that lineup is hard to beat. Well, I wouldn't mind seeing them with Pig Destroyer...

Holy Shit. Saw Julie Christmas last night. This is the first time seeing her solo stuff, which may have translated to a live show even better than MOOB.
Seriously, next time she tours I strongly encourage people to go see her. Even people like Velocity (sorry to pick on you) that don't like female vocalists will be hard pressed to find a more intense performance. Not to sound too cliche here, but she is absolutely BRUTAL live.
Steven Brodsky played as well. I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff, as it comes off a bit cheesy. That said, there were three songs at the end that were awesome. Sounded like Cave In at their angriest with a bunch of really cool guitar parts. Hopefully he'll put that stuff out on the next album...

I've been meaning to spend some time with this album as well as Narrows, which features members of Botch and These Arms Are Snakes. Seems like supergroups don't have to suck so much these days!

Stoked to see the mighty Uli Jon Roth tonight down at the Metro.
I recall that you saw him on he 70,000 tons of steel metal cruise, Sask, and were suitably impressed. What kind of stuff did he play? Strictly classic old In Trance/ Virgin Killer Scorps, or did he mix in some of his symphonic metal offerings as well?
Living legend in either case. I hope to get a pic with him and let him know that our son was named at least partially in honor of him (along with uncle Uli).
Also excited to hear the Goatwhore. The opening track from Carving Out the Eyes of God is kind of a theme song to my Motorhead friend set.

Yeah, Uli's shows on that cruise were among the best of all 42 bands. When I saw him he mixed things up with his proggy solo stuff, early Scorps, and the odd cover. Really fun, he's got a great band and singer. Of course the Scorpions stuff was the big highlight, he played "In Trance", "We'll Burn the Sky", "Sails of Charon", "I've Got to Be Free", and at one point a little bit of "Virgin Killer". I'd love to see him again for sure.

Been spending the afternoon revisiting Uli-era Scorpions records on RCA vinyl getting ready for tonight's show, all the way from Fly to the Rainbow through Taken by Force. I think I will need to re-evaluate my previously firmly held preconception that the run from Lovedrive through Love at First Sting represents their Golden Years. The guitar tone, those Thin Lizzy-esque cascading twin lead solos, those songs. SO GOOD.
Yes it does. One of those awesome Taken by Force groovy-jammy cuts. What really stands out on songs like that and "The Sails of Charon" is the tight pure groove of that rhythm section.
Paves- Have you ever heard In Trance and Taken by Force? Can't help but think you'd dig those sides.
Thanks for the link to that new Goatwhore. Track is brutal.

I do love the Scorpions! Definitely have heard a friend's copy of In Trance, but I've been meaning to get all their early records. They seem to have had quite the juicy run in their day.

Can't tell if you're just goofing on me and my dinosaur tastes. But if you're not, please rest assured that the recommendation is sincere, and based on your Board-professed admiration of Thin Lizzy and Rainbow. I have always dug the Scorps but only recently realized the true greatness of the three last Uli Jon Roth recordings, which are truly some next level shit in terms of straight ahead ASSKICKING 70's hard rock-proto metal. In descending order of awesomeness, I'd say pick up:
Taken by Force In Trance Virgin Killer Tokyo Tapes
Fly to the Rainbow still has a lot of fruity psychedelic flourishes and doesn't really deserve mention in the hallowed group of those four mentioned above.
But those four. Oh my.

That's great to hear. Plus, a new record means a new tour and I really can't think of many bands that are more fun live than Torche. Just a feel good, fist pumping (although I'm too self conscious and jaded to actually fist pump) good time.

I was being serious! I love the later stuff and UFO (early and Schenker era... my Strangers LP is signed by the guy) and any great '70s hard rock so why wouldn't I be? I've had my eye open for a vinyl copy of Tokyo Tapes for a while now.

Lots of subtle differences between 40 Watt Sun and Pallbearer. 40 Watt Sun had rawer production but exceptional singing, while Pallbearer is really, really rich sonically, there's a lot of depth to those arrangements, a beautiful album.
Christian Mistress's Possession is my favourite metal album of January/February, but I have to say, right now Accept's Stalingrad just might be my metal AOTY so far.

So, I just got back from a couple weeks in Peru. While I was there I happened upon this concert poster in a supermarket. As much shit as the US gets from the rest of the world for spreading our consumer/capitalist culture, THIS is what they should be pissed about (except for the deftones, who still make listenable music). I can't believe most of these bands are still around..... haha.
