Metallica has gone to the absolute opposite extreme (i.e., coming very close to actually apologizing for playing new material on stage), which has completely killed them as a live band.

Heh, they should apologize for recording new material.
Saskadelphia
Yeah, ballsy's the right word. I'm half impressed, half bewildered...they've never done anything like this before. If I was traveling a thousand miles to see them for the first (or in my case second) time, I'd be a little disappointed, but if it was my fourth or fifth time, I think I'd be thrilled.

Setlist aside, folks are saying the stage show is incredible, and the band sounds great.

The new Converge has leaked and my god is it incredible. I just got done listening to it 4 times in a row. "Grim Heart/Black Rose" is maybe their best song ever. This completely stomps all over any other album I've heard this year, I can't imagine it not being my #1 at the end of the year. Also, pre-orders for the vinyl started today at www.deathwishinc.com. First 500 come on metallic gold vinyl!

edit: looks like this is up in the y.s.i. thread.

Wasn't sure if I should put it up in this thread or not. This was pulled from OiNK though (artifacts in trk 2, according to the log), and I haven't had a chance to listen to what I upped here, so can't say what it sounds like.

It's an awesome album, picks up right where the Null EP left off. I put it at #6 on my Decibel 2006 list last month, and I don't think it'll change when I do my "official" metal list next month.

It's all about the bass on that CD. The guy is incredible. Vocals need a little work, but other than that, definitely deserving of ranking among the year's finest.

I got my Maiden ticks in the mail today. Baby steps for a week to Maiden. I also can't believe people on Blabbermouth are complaining that Maiden .........I guess I should put a spoiler warning here, setlist wise.....

Maiden doesn't play Number of the Beast! Oh no!!!! My response to that is....finally!!! Even though the last 5 songs are expected.....no Number of the Beast is long overdue.

Personally, I'd rather hear it than "Iron Maiden" or "Fear of The Dark."

I can understand retiring "Number," "The Trooper," or "Run To The Hills" because they've gotten long in the tooth, are way overplayed, whatever, but then explain "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Iron Maiden" to me, which one could make the same argument about. Why retire "Number," et al. and KEEP "IM" and "Hallowed?" (Mind you, I LOVE "Hallowed," "IM" not so much, and "Fear" is good live, but you get the drift...if you're retiring the long-in-the-tooth songs, might as well go all the way, right?)

Cos "Hallowed" kills every single time. There is no better live song in metal. Theatrics, melodrama, starting solemnly but then builds and builds until Bruce has the entire arena going nuts. If there's one live staple I'm not yet sick of, it's this one.

Can you up the debut? I've heard it's amazing. Wasn't Jason Newsted on that, right before he went to Metallica?

And yes, I'd greatly appreciate some Boris. I'm not that familiar with them. The work they did with Sun O))) is great, and the only other track I have is an 11 minute song on a.. Robert Johnson Tribute album, if I remember correctly.

As much as I'd like to post the remixed Doomsday CD, I'm not going to. In the meantime, I did find a blog that has the original version:

I'm really enjoying the new Trivium. Man, they sound quite a bit like old Metallica - both the guitar tone and the vocalist recall Ride the Lightning-era Metallica, but with a mix of RtL's commercial sound and MoP's complex thrashiness.

It's nice to find a new metal band with a "middle of the road" vocal style. No death growls or outright screaming, but none of the emo-style stuff either (which I don't mind, but apparently that marks you as a pussy according to the young 'uns).

They're close to going overboard with the Metallica fixation, and they tend to overreach, but damn, if the new cd isn't pleasing. And the title track instrumental is enough to convince folks that they're for real. Trivium is young, too, they're just starting to come into their own. They just need to shed that lingering bit of goofiness..."Unrepentant" could become their "Escape", meaning they're going to regret the day they thought it was good enough to include on the album.
Saskadelphia
Seriously, how great is the new To-Mera album? The contrasts are incredible, you've got Julie Kiss's goth vocals, a keyboardist who alternates from Debussy to jazz to symphonic, a noodly guitarist who shreds away at math metal passages, and a brutal rhythm section that should be in a death/grind band. Nightwish/Epica/Within Temptation/After Forever, as much as I like all bands, are musical lightweights compared to this.

Yeah, its definitely a good one. Adds quite a bit of a kick to the "pretty girl/pretty voice" genre of metal, which it probably needed. And no dopey death/throaty vox male counterpart vocals, a real plus. Yeah, its all over the place: goth/thrash/death/prog with heavy jazzy/symphonic elements, but it all comes together rather well. Highly enjoyable, especially if you wished Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, etc. (bands I really like, mind you) had more, well, balls musically.

Can't recommend this highly enough. Definitely year-end list worthy.

Got so much new stuff today (Today is the Day, Incantation, Brutal Truth, and more), but have NO time to listen. No time. Haven't even gotten around to playing the new ones by Boris, Battle of Mice, God Dethroned, Khlyst, and Deftones yet. Argh.

This recent clip of Bruce Dickinson onstage is awesome:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fGo0rHO_dN0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fGo0rHO_dN0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Bruce is so awesome. Two days for us Chicago Irons.

Anyway, that Trivium album. First rec of theirs I've heard, actually. DEFINITELY early-Metallica derived, with some occassionally howl worthy lyrics, but damned if it isn't a good, old-fashioned throw-fists-in-the-air-and-bang-thy-head metal record, with enough of a modern chaotic metalcore twist to it.
("We Are The Fire" is like my guilty pleasure favorite on the record...its like the bastard child of Metallica and Skid Row or something! Totally goofy, but catchy as hell, and brings a real smile to my face.)

And I finally heard that Wolves In The Throne Room album today. Wow. That's gonna take some absorbtion, but man, is it something else. Still not quite ready to jump on the USBM bandwagon, but these guys bring a lot to the table. I enjoy the ambient/avant garde elements thrown in there...very Celtic Frost.

Yeah, I've been listening to the Wolves in the Throne Room album, too. It didn't really grab me first time through, but I'm liking it more and more.

Also listening the crap out of Agalloch's The Mantle--dunno if where that puts me in relation to the bandwagon (not exactly pure black metal anyway), but, damn, if it's not a great album.

About Celtic Frost--I never was exposed to them back in the day, but I liked Monotheist so much that I ordered most of their catalog. I have to say, the early albums are so different--interesting, but not nearly as powerful. I haven't really been motivated to listen to the older stuff all that much after my first few listens. Into the Pandemonium has a certain goofy charm and Morbid Tales feels comfortably thrashy, but To Mega Therion didn't make that strong of an impression.

IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson announced at tonight's (October 16th) Toronto show at the Air Canada Centre that the band will tour across Canada next year. "This is the largest crowd we've played to in Toronto in a number of years," Dickinson said happily from the stage. "We will be back to tour Canada next year," he added. Close to 11,000 people witnessed the show - which followed the previous Canadian dates which were sold out in Quebec City, QC (on October 9th) and Montreal, QC (on October 10th).

!!!

The album has already gone gold in Canada, and is well on its way to hitting platinum. A Canadian tour would be the greatest thing ever. For me, anyway. biggrin.gif

For those who missed out, or just didn't feel like spending $30 on a record, here is the new Boris album, Vein. This is their rawest, noisiest release yet. Boris does hardcore. 12 untitled tracks in 30 minutes, killer stuff.

So it turns out that there are 2 versions of this album. A hardcore punk version and another version that's just two sidelong tracks of noise. The hardcore version is going to US distributors and the noise one is going to European distributors. Why the band or label never mentioned this, who knows? Anyway, here's the noise version for anyone who's interested. It's pretty good, but I'm glad I got the other one.

Also, this is already selling for $50+ on ebay. Ridiculous.

Hey, there's a new Drudkh album out today! It's called Songs Of Grief and Solitude. Had no idea this was coming.

DRUDKH's fifth album ventures into acoustic territory, offering ancient, sorrowful, Ukrainian folk songs. Their radical, conservative revolutionary ideas here establish a dynamic counterpoint with the serene, earthy, primitivist atmosphere of the music. The unusual booklet comes adorned with old illustrations of Mediaeval / fantasy folk tales and traditional, Ukrainian decorative motifs. A truly unique item, different from their other albums, yet wholly consistent with the conception of this stellar band.

You can order from Supernal Records. I'm waiting for a leak to see what it sounds like first.

I've read a few reviews that lead me to believe this entire record is acoustic, but i'm still eager to hear it.

Got so much new stuff today (Today is the Day, Brutal Truth-

Am I right in thinking these are re-issues?

And that Bruce clip was great, though I expect nothing less from the man!
