what are confidence points?
MattW
Aug 4 2006, 02:26 PM
For a week with 16 games, you try to select 16 winners. The team you're most confident in winning you would mark a 16 with your pick, 2nd most confident gets a 15, and so on down to the team you are least confident in marked with a 1. For every confidence interval that actually does win, you get that many points. For the picks that lose, you get no points.

I prefer just point spreads, but the confidence is ok as well, I just think that shit will drive me even more insane.

yeah, i'm in. my preference is confidence w/o point spreads, just cuz that's the easiest for me to breeze through without really having to think alot. but however you set it up i'm ready.

yahoo's college football pick 'em only includes games played by top 25 teams in AP poll. i guess that'd be 25 games at most, and probably fewer most weeks.

My beef with confidence is that it takes away the greatness of the upset pick.
You can make an amaizing call only to have it dubbed worthless by a confidence rank of 1 or 2.
Of course you could always rank it higher up, but nobody's that ballsy.
then on the other hand, it's a good way to make things interesting from week to week. hmm....

Not true, you just have to hedge properly. For instance, if you have a gut feeling about the Colts losing to Detroit, you can put a low number on Indy while everyone's riding a high teen. If the Colts lose, everyone in the league would lose a high number while you lose your deuce. If they win, hopefully you picked up that high teen on some other game.

But unfortunately, you'll never be put in a situation where Detroit beats Indy.
EVER.

Confidence pools are great specifically because they reward upset picks. MattW's on the money here. It's not about how few points you get from an upset pick (which is your choice, by the way), but about the point differential between your upset pick and what everyone else loses on the favorite.

I also set the picks deadline to be on Friday before the game. (I assume this translates to Wednesday as deadline before the Thursday games.) Is this cool with everybody? I could also set it to 5 min before the first game starts.

I'd prefer 5 minutes before, or at least saturday. somebody's guaranteed to forget either way, but the less that happens the more people will stick with this thing all the way through.

It seems to me, at this point anyway, that the concensus is leaning towards confidence points. So, we'll go with that.
We can ALSO do spread alongside confidence, so weigh in on that.
I will change the deadline to 5 minutes before *each* game, as Rocks makes a good "excuses" point.
Football can't come soon enough.

Bonds trainer: I spoke with Brady
By Associated Press
Thursday, August 17, 2006 - Updated: 06:59 AM EST
SAN FRANCISCO - Greg Anderson, the personal trainer at the heart of the Barry Bonds steroids scandal, evoked the name of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in a statement to prosecutors.
Anderson, who is refusing to testify before a newly assembled grand jury, said he had spoken to Brady over the phone but never made further contact.
“I had only one brief conversation with Tom Brady regarding a potential future workout,” Anderson said in the statement to prosecutors that was included in court documents unsealed yesterday. “I never had another phone conversation with him and never discussed it with anyone.”
Paula Canny, an Anderson attorney and friend, said Brady’s name appears along with “10 to 20” other athletes that Anderson’s grand jury subpoena lists as people the trainer should be prepared to answer questions about. Canny said investigators may have gotten Brady’s name from Anderson phone records seized by the government, though Anderson doesn’t refer to any other athletes in his brief statement.
Brady attended the same Bay Area high school as Bonds. His agent, Donald Yee, couldn’t be reached for comment yesterday, and the Patriots declined comment on Anderson’s statement.
“I don’t have any information on it,” Patriots spokesman Stacey James said. “I’m not going on hearsay.”
Anderson has refused on four different occasions to testify before federal grand juries investigating Bonds. He was released from prison July 20 after serving 15 days for refusing to testify, but only after that grand jury’s term expired.
“I will not ever make statements about other people,” Anderson said in the June 23 statement filed with the court. “That has always been my position and will continue to be.”
Today, prosecutors plan to ask U.S. District Judge William Alsup to send Anderson to prison if he stands by that policy.
Government lawyers are investigating whether Bonds lied under oath when he told an earlier grand jury he didn’t know whether the substances given to him by Anderson were steroids.
