What's with people liking NIN? Even if he sometimes comes up with a cool melody or arrangement or something, the lyrics make it too laughable to enjoy.

Dude, you're young. Where's yer angst?

I should have some and he shouldn't. Trent Reznor lives in bizarroworld.

Spot-the-influence is a lot of fun with that 1988-90 Moz stuff. He retreated to his glam favorites and you get obvious Roxy Music references like the bridge in "Playboys," "Pashernate Love," and the end of "The Ordinairy Boys" must be a nod to "Five Years."

U2 - "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?"

Year
: 1992

US Chart Position: #35 / #28 Top 40 / #7 Modern Rock / #2 Mainstream Rock

UK Chart Position: #14

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "Caught in a half-world, on an understated sonic cloud, "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" ( Achtung Baby, 1991) sounds like it's going to break out from its ethereal pen but it never does. The song could just as easily be classified a mistake as an experiment: According to the book U2 at the End of the World, "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" was one of those songs that began life strictly as an idea as opposed to a fully formed entity from the artist's head. Yet, the genesis wasn't progressing or evolving particularly well within the band structure; the tune was edging its way toward the scrap heap but Bono was persistent in its salvation. The end result is a lyrical triumph, though production-wise it's not particularly extraordinary, but it is a departure point of sorts, for U2 was about to take their sound from the days of The Joshua Tree into the '90s. The singer is waiting, waiting, but his subject isn't quite free nor is he the "accident waiting to happen" of which he sings. Taking a while to tune in at the top, the wall of noise guitar settles into melody while the bass and drums supply a lo-fi-ish groove; the surprise is that though it builds climactically, the song never approaches the wide-awake Big Music that is the patented U2 sound. And on that score, the experiment succeeds (though an argument could be made that the chorus is lock, stock, and barrel U2)."

Elemeno P.T.
The low placement of Sugar Kane is surprising, given that I assume its been heard by most SOMBIES. The bridge in the middle then the drum transition to..."Angel come and play...Fly Me Away" (Should have been the teaser, btw)...music doesn't get any more transcendent than that.

Clearly Ben, you never had a wacky friend named Al. That song could've been written by my old school chum Alan. But I don't think I voted for it or "Graceland." "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes" and "Gumboots" are a different story.

Pearl Jam - "Jeremy" / "Yellow Ledbetter" / "Footsteps"

Year
: 1992

US Chart Position: #5 Modern Rock / #5 Mainstream Rock, #7 in '95 (maybe? I think they might be lying)

UK Chart Position: #15

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #5 (year), #22 (decade), #209 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #182

AMG Says: "Sure, "Alive" and "Evenflow" were pretty big hits, but "Jeremy" is where Pearl Jam mania galvanized and propelled the band past the "Seattle sound" and into rock royalty. The song about a troubled youth who puts himself to death by gunshot in front of his schoolmates would not only mark the beginning of Pearl Jam as a force, but also their last appearance on MTV for half a decade. Opening with Jeff Ament's eight-string bass and single-note guitar work courtesy of Gossard and McCready, "Jeremy" is a classic buildup tune. It tells the story in hindsight, Eddie Vedder narrating not only the events of Jeremy's troubled existence, but his own feelings into the matter. "Clearly I remember/Picking on the boy," and "Gnashed his teeth/And bit the recess lady's breast" are samples of the type of character that Vedder is trying to come to terms with. Jeremy's end, interpreted as " Jeremy spoke in/Class today," becomes the rallying cry of sorts, the point at which the song builds to the crescendo with Vedder vocalizing and the rest of the bandmembers given free rein to close out the song. Arguably Pearl Jam's most earnest work and one of their most successful singles."

The Cocteau Twins - "Heaven or Las Vegas"

Year
: 1990

US Chart Position: #9

UK Chart Position: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "The Cocteau Twins' return to form with its Heaven or Las Vegas album was encapsulated in the title track, a majestic number that effortlessly showed the band's collective strengths while at the same time adding some new twists to its long-established formula. For one thing, Elizabeth Fraser's singing is remarkably clear and direct; while certainly she's not perfectly understandable (and part of her appeal is how she can make hard-to-interpret lyrics so emotionally gripping), it does add an extra heft to the proceedings. Guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Simon Raymonde create music similarly elegant and beautiful as ever, but stripping back on the echo just a touch in favor of letting the main melodies carry through. Raymonde's loping, classically post-punk work fits the drum machine beat to a T while retaining its own beauty, while Guthrie's descending notes in the verse turn into a gripping main wash on the chorus. The final brilliant touch comes courtesy of a second chorus that appears twice, in the middle and at the end. Fraser first sings some inspiring, rising vocals, then Guthrie finishes with a series of simple, soaring notes that are as flat-out lovely (yet powerful) as it gets."
