SOMB has really turned it's back on 90s alterna-rock (Pumpkins, RHCP) probably because of an age shift in boarders.

The Smiths - "Girlfriend in a Coma" / "Work is a Four-Letter Word" / "I Keep Mine Hidden"Year: 1987
US Chart Position: n/a
UK Chart Position: #13
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #23 (year), #159 (decade), #932 (all-time)
AMG Says: "The lush, playful, and sweet "Girlfriend In A Coma" is one of the highlights of The Smiths' final studio album Strangeways Here We Come. It was released first as a seven-inch single with the b-side "Work Is A Four Letter Word" in July of 1987. The opening seconds of the song showcase the skills and vibrant rhythms of bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, suggesting how very essential their contributions were to the band's overall sound. Bold string arrangements courtesy of Johnny Marr help to cement what might be the band's fullest sounding song. That Marr's gentle acoustic guitar frequently disappears from the mix is a testament to his abilities as an arranger and co-producer; he allows the focus to shift to his band mates more than ever with this song. Stephen Street was given a co-producer credit for the album, and he might be responsible for the music sounding fuller than much of The Queen Is Dead, where he received only an engineer credit. If the song doesn't depict Morrissey delivering his most confident vocals, it's hard to say where he sounds more assured. The subject matter is almost hopelessly dark, and Morrissey's protagonist constantly stresses the serious nature of his girlfriend's prognosis. Punchy and fun, yet sad and tender, Girlfriend In A Coma is a gleaming, romantic treat from a band crafting brilliant, genre-defining music in the turmoil of its dying days."

no, it's not really terrible. (this just reminded me that i actually waited outside a record store on the day this was released.) "feel the pain" and "i don't think so" are pretty great. there are a handful of other good songs, but i've always felt that the moments weren't as high as other dinosaur jr albums. it's worth a listen or two, though.
