New Order - "Regret"

Year
: 1993

US Chart Position: #28 / #7 Top 40 / #1 Dance / #1 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #4

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #20 (year), #171 (decade), #1211 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: Would've been #541

AMG Says: "Almost four years after the release of 1989's Technique, New Order fans around the world eagerly awaited the trailer single, "Regret," to find out what changes the band had made for their sixth LP in more than a dozen years. Fortunately, the answer was not much. As sublime a balance of obtuse lyrics, just barely emoted vocals, vague club leanings, and grooving synth melodics as their classic material, "Regret" hit the British Top Five and, led by a video that actually pictured members of the band, stormed the American Top 40 (a first for the band)."

James - "Laid"

Year
: 1994

US Chart Position: #61 / #3 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #25

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #107

AMG Says: "The title track of their most critically acclaimed and commercially successful album in the U.S., "Laid" gave James their first American chart single in 1993; although it wasn't a huge pop hit, stalling outside the Top 50, it did get enough air play on MTV and college/ alternative radio to break the band to a wider audience. On the surface, "Laid" seemed to be a playful departure from the album's shimmering melancholy, but there was a dark undercurrent to its humor that matched well with the brooding intimacy of the more serious material. The song concerns a relationship that's sexually fulfilling for both parties but utterly dysfunctional outside the bedroom. The lyrics get into somewhat explicit territory, but they don't cross the line separating playful from glib. Once the initial shock of revelation wears off, there's a surprising intimacy in details like "she only comes when she's on top," or "dressed me up in women's clothes/messed around with gender roles." Yet in spite of this sexual openness, the rest of the verses make both partners out to be obsessive, dysfunctional ("My therapist said not to see you no more"), perhaps even violent ("Caught your hand inside the till/slammed your fingers in the door/fought with kitchen knives and skewers" -- although it isn't clear whether these lines are literal, metaphorical, or simply a dark joke, they can't bode well regardless). The music has the same sort of contrast between lightheartedness and drama; Tim Booth's rich, expressive voice has natural leanings toward the latter, but his keening, vaguely Celtic falsetto on the chorus, as well as the song's simple chord progression and sing-song melody, keep things from sounding too serious. Plus, Brian Eno's warmly atmospheric production helps keep things grounded, and actually helps the song sound more confessional than was probably intended. All of this makes for a quintessential pop single that manages to be funny and emotionally complex at the same time."

Ministry - "Jesus Built My Hotrod"

Year
: 1992

US Chart Position: #37 Dance / #19 Rap

UK Chart Position: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #38 (year), #395 (decade), #2304 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #463

AMG Says: "One of Ministry's best-known songs, "Jesus Built My Hotrod" has been likened to an industrial version of the Trashmen's garage rock staple "Surfin' Bird" -- and the comparison actually isn't too far off. The gonzo lead vocal was performed by the Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes (who also co-wrote the song), and it's mostly manic gibberish spat through a distortion unit. Haynes has no problem keeping pace with the pounding, up-tempo beat, and neither does guitarist Al Jourgensen, who has to maintain a blistering clip on the repeated riff that takes up the vast majority of the song. It's more complicated than it first sounds because although the song is in standard time (four beats to a measure), the riff is actually two and a half measures long -- so its emphasized parts never fall onto the beat the same way two times in a row, and never land quite where the ear expects (unless you're counting very carefully). Jourgensen also contributes a careening solo which climaxes with an unaccompanied slide up the guitar neck, mimicking the sound of a hotrod motor revving up to return to the song. "Jesus Built My Hotrod" was released in late 1991, a little over half a year before it appeared on the Psalm 69 album; when MTV picked up on the accompanying video, Ministry suddenly had more exposure than ever before, which built significant anticipation for Psalm 69 and helped make it their most popular album ever. Jourgensen usually reserved the crazed humor of "Jesus Built My Hotrod" for his Revolting Cocks side project, but pairing it with the precise Ministry attack produced a classic of industrial metal."

when i saw tim booth last year, he played a slow version of "laid" that lasted about five minutes. and he sang it totally differently than on the single. i'd always heard that one as playful, but the way he sang it was dark. very interesting take on it. it was like the way he sang it fit better with the subject content.

Sugar - "Helpless"

Year
: 1992

US Chart Position: #5 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #419

AMG Says: "Would “Helpless” have done so well in 1992 had there not been a strange interest on the part of record companies in loud, slightly aggressive guitar rock? Probably not, but all commercial questions aside, it is still one of Bob Mould’s better moments, and easily Sugar’s best. Initially released on his Singles Only Label, “Helpless” was a worthy introduction to a considerably less volatile (than Husker Du) but arguably more technically proficient band. “Helpless” shies away from Mould’s darker side -- prevalent on Black Sheets of Rain -- and turns more towards the pop sensibilities that Husker Du were just beginning to explore. Malcolm Travis’ aggressive drumming style compliments Dave Barbe’s melodic bass line, which lays a perfect foundation for Mould’s distorted guitar work. While commercially speaking Sugar wouldn’t equal this kind of success again in their career, those who stuck with them saw “Helpless” as just one aspect of a multifaceted band."

I have no problem with Green Day this high, I just find that song significantly inferior to "Basket Case" and "Longview." The snark without the energy, I guess.
The Good Dr Bill
nah, WICA is the gem on that album. If "Basket Case" and "Longview" were the siongs that made it obvious that Green Day was about to become one of the biggest bands in the world, this was the song that pointed to the fact that the band would still have a career just as big ten years down the road. Special, special song, one of the best pop/rock singles of the decade.

Rob Base & DJ EZ-Rock - "It Takes Two"

Year
: 1988

US Chart Position: #36 / #17 Dance / #3 R&B

UK Chart Position: #24 / #47 in '89

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #4 (year), #53 (decade), #358 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #457

AMG Says: "There are many critics and listeners who claim that Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock's "It Takes Two" is the greatest hip-hop single ever cut. It's hard to disagree with them. Built on a sample of Lyn Collins' "Think (About It)," the song is a prime example of how the best hip-hop doesn't merely recycle the past -- it expands upon it. "It Takes Two" may be unthinkable without the sample, but it's hardly a loop -- the bass phrase has been fattened and strengthened, placed front and center in the mix so it now functions like a heavy metal guitar riff. The beat is constructed around the phrase, and everything grows from there, from the female vocalist singing "It takes two to make a thing go right" to Base's effortless rhyming. This is party music, pure and simple, but it's transcendent party music -- it sweeps you up immediately, and you're carried away by the sheer thrill of the bass, beat, and rhymes. It takes a few concentrated listens to realize just how immaculately the record is constructed, and, even then, it's amazing how easy Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock make it seem. But if it really was easy, not only would more hip-hop from 1988 be this timeless, but the years that followed would have produced many records that matched it. As it stands, "It Takes Two" is a singular work. It broke down the doors for crossover rap -- although it barely scraped the Top 40, it went platinum -- and it provided the hook-heavy blueprint for its successors. And, as the years pass, its musical brilliance loses none of its luster. It's still irresistible, and still a sure-fire way to get a party started right."

Weezer - "Buddy Holly"

Year

US Chart Position: #34 Mainstream Rock / #17 Top 40 / #2 Modenr Rock

UK Chart Position: #12

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #10 (year), #65 (decade), #140 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #199

AMG Says: "The most immediately infectious song on Weezer's debut album (as well as their biggest hit, thanks in no small part to Spike Jonze's hilarious and inventive video, which inserted the band into an episode of Happy Days), "Buddy Holly" is short, brash, incredibly catchy, and utterly charming. Frontman Rivers Cuomo's lyrics, as always, don't actually make a lot of sense and the singalong chorus has absolutely nothing to do with the nonsensical verses; really, the song is as much about hooks like the "hoo-hoo" backing vocals and bassist Matt Sharp's falsetto lead-in to each chorus as anything else. The ultra-crunchy, distorted guitars clash agreeably with the bubblegummy melody, giving the song a feel akin to a classic T. Rex single. What's odd is that a song with such a peculiar structure (the opening, with Cuomo singing over a roar of guitars, sounds like the CD has started reading the disc several seconds into the song, and the ending is equally abrupt) could immediately become so popular, testament to Cuomo's under-acknowledged gift for writing smart, funny, and catchy pop songs. The Moog Cookbook recorded a tongue-in-cheek synthesizer version for their self-titled 1995 debut."

UK Chart Position: #9

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #14 (year), #103 (decade), #769 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #335

AMG Says: "Hearing Kurt Cobain sing "And I swear that I don't have a gun" gives "Come as You Are" a sting it was never meant to have when Nirvana's breakthrough album, Nevermind, was first released in 1991. However, coming from a band (and an album) whose raison d'être was usually bad karma, "Come as You Are" was a rare oasis of compassion and understanding; if it's hardly an up tune, with its descending minor-key melody and wobbly, effects-drenched guitar lines, it also suggests that the often judgmental Mr. Cobain was willing to accept his audience on their own terms, at least at this moment -- either "doused in mud" or "soaked in bleach." When Cobain declares that he's unarmed, it's an attempt to reassure listeners that no matter how much of a misanthrope he may be, his target is the world at large rather than the individuals in it, and that there was still room in this damaged world for everyone. A year after he recorded "Come as You Are," the world at large was showing up at Cobain's doorstep as he went from being a minor cult figure to a bona fide rock star, and it's significant that he wouldn't express quite this degree of openness for his audience again."
