AMG says: New Order continued to surprise with "Love Vigilantes," from Low-life (1985). Devastated by the suicide of their lead singer and songwriter, Ian Curtis, the three remaining members of Joy Division -- Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Morris -- added keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and renamed the band. After a debut LP that did not do much to establish the new group as a wholly separate project, they released Power, Corruption & Lies in 1983, a powerful statement of purpose with a new sound that married the poetic and introspective brand of punk rock of the old group with the new accent on melodicism, focused musicianship, and experimental fusions of dance and modern rock music. And just as that album began with an insistent pop song with a twangy guitar lick, an artistic leap from the dark oeuvre of Joy Division, two years later their next LP, Low-life, launched itself with a distinctly twangy sound -- gleaned from American country and folk music -- on the leadoff track "Love Vigilantes."
If old fans were surprised by "Age of Consent" as a poppy beginning, they were doubly thrown by "Love Vigilantes." And yet, few complained; the song is an undeniable pop number, with multiple hooks: an opening melodica theme, an acoustic-guitar riff that peppers the arrangement, and the infectious verse and chorus melodies. The lyrical narrative is a compelling tale of a lonely soldier who comes home, surprising his wife who has been given the erroneous report of his death. It is a post-modern folk song; without all the electric instruments and modern production, it is at its core a campfire singalong. "Love Vigilantes" only uses three chords, which is actually a bold leap forward for New Order, who spent much of Power, Corruption & Lies exploring the seemingly endless possibilities of two-chord progressions. Sumner's youthful voice is an expressive tool for the lyric's story; he could easily pass as a young soldier. It begins like an anthem with "Oh I've just come/From the land of the sun/From a war that must be won/In the name of truth/With our soldiers so brave/your freedom we will save/With our rifles and grenades/And some help from God." But Sumner's voice softens to the intimate almost whisper of the chorus: "I want to see/My family/My wife and child/Waiting for me/I've got to go home/I've been so alone you see." The lyric is structured like an old country song, with the premise/setup followed by the payoff/punch line final verse: "When I walked through the door/My wife she lay upon the floor/And with tears her eyes were sore/I did not know why/Then I looked into her hand/And I saw the telegram/That said that I was a brave, brave man/But that I was dead." It is the sort of formula found in classic songs like "Green Green Grass of Home." "Love Vigilantes" is a far more traditional track than any that New Order offered to this point. For all intents and purposes, it was a straight pop song, as welcoming and lucid as their older songs were enigmatic and oblique. It was a new openness reflected in the band's album packaging, which included photos of the musicians for the first time.

The first song, "Soon," is one of the group's greatest sound paintings, filled with evocative textures and eerie, disembodied rhythms, while the title track is nearly as fascinating, making Glider an essential addition to a My Bloody Valentine library."

The La's - "There She Goes"(878 Points, 14 Votes, One #1 Vote)Year: 1990
US Chart Position: #49 / #2 Modern Rock
UK Chart Position: #13 / #65 in '99
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #4 (year), #32 (decade), #292 (all-time)
AMG Says: "One of rock's simplest yet most evocative love songs, the La's "There She Goes" predated Brit-pop by four years, yet it alluded to Britain's golden era of pop with less irony and considerably more melody and heart. Chiming, jangly guitars, heart-tugging major-minor chord changes, yearning vocals, and poignant lyrics like "She calls my name/Pulls my chain/No one else can feel my pain" result in timeless, seemingly effortless pop magic that is much greater than the sum of its parts. Nevertheless, upon its first release as a single in 1988, "There She Goes" missed out on chart success, though its reissue two years later -- around the time of the release of their debut album -- made the U.K. Top 20 and the Top 50 in the U.S. Just a few years later, the song was already appearing on British hits collections; even more significantly, cover versions began to pop up as soon as 1993, with the Boo Radleys reworking it on the So I Married An Axe Murderer soundtrack. Though their version focused on the song's sunny side, adding cheery handclaps and harmonies, it added to the song's reputation as an emerging pop standard. Five years later, the folk-pop/ CCM trio Sixpence None the Richer covered it on their self-titled third album, giving it a sweet, Innocence Mission/ Sundays-like veneer. This version of "There She Goes" also made its way onto the soundtrack to the kids' film Snow Day, poised to captivate another generation of music fans. Though the La's remained frustratingly silent more than a decade after they released "There She Goes," their disappearance only added to the song's aura of once-in-a-lifetime brilliance."

U2 - "Where the Streets Have No Name" / "Silver and Gold" / "The Sweetest Thing"(887 Points, 12 Votes, One #1 Vote)Year: 1987
US Chart Position: #13 / #11 Mainstream Rock
UK Chart Position: #4
Acclaimed Musci Ranking: #20 (year), #127 (decade), #768 (all-time)
Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #177
AMG Says: ""Where the Streets Have No Name" failed to equal the dominance of its two chart-topping predecessors ( "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") from U2's 1987 blockbuster The Joshua Tree, just missing the Top Ten on the singles chart. However, its insistent, propulsive rhythmic drive and anthemic chorus eventually earned the song its status as part of the uppermost echelon of the band's repertoire, and an enduring fan favorite. With the slow build of its arrangement toward a climactic peak, "Where the Streets Have No Name" was a perfect album-opener, fading in first with atmospheric synths that gave no indication of the song's tempo. The Edge then entered with an up-tempo, chiming guitar arpeggio, run through a delay effect (in which each note rang out twice) to make it sound even busier. While bassist Adam Clayton maintained a steadily driving pulse, Larry Mullen Jr.'s drums kept time in 16th notes for much of the song, and the percussive guitar effects picked up the slack when he dropped into a looser, less demanding pattern. This perpetual forward momentum lent greater force to the song's lyrics, which pleaded for a utopian sort of freedom vaguely linked with natural imagery and an escape from urbanization. Bono's delivery was passionate and grandiose, his commitment to the material unshakable. That, coupled with the sonic power of the rest of the band, was what gave pre- Achtung Baby U2 its tremendous force -- and "Where the Streets Have No Name" was a perfect example."

The relative lack of Smiths (or low placing at least) is disgraceful.
Also, what is what the R.E.M obsession on this board? I notice people had to resort to voting through aliases when they were getting their ass handed to them by Ok Computer.

You don't make much sense. Sure...big REM fixation with many of us. No...The Smiths did fairly well on the singles countdown. And OK Computer...not even eligable until next decades...being voted on now. And what's this talk of aliases....?

Thank you, I'm aware that Ok Computer was not made before 1995. The example was to highlight the REM obsession here.
On both the semi-final & final, REM experienced a "late surge" of votes when it was trailing badly.... rather suspicious to me.
I've no idea what the singles countdown is, but they aren't doing too great on this one.

Conspiracy nut....really...I highly doubt there were alias list submissions. Fact is REM is very well received here. Just look at other related threads.
And GDB's right....4 in the top 100 is very respectable. I'm a huge fan and...sure would like to see more but so it goes.

Dr. Dre f/ Snoop Doggy Dogg - "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang"(909 Points, 16 Votes, One #1 Vote)Year: 1993
US Chart Position: #2 / #1 R&B / #1 Rap
UK Chart Position: #31
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #2 (year), #13 (decade), #138 (all-time)
Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #255
AMG Says: "Dr. Dre had introduced his protégé, Snoop Doggy Dogg, to the world on the 1992 soundtrack single "Deep Cover," but it was "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang," the first single from Dre's smash album The Chronic, that really put him in the public eye. Although more chilled-out than the deeply funky follow-up, "Dre Day" (borrowing a sample from Leon Haywood's "I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You"), "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" was perhaps the archetypal G-funk single. It blended Parliament/ Funkadelic beats with a stop-start bass line, gently wah-wahed guitar, nasal-sounding synthesizers playing high-pitched melodies, samples of a sighing woman, and lyrics that celebrated life on the streets and the amoral toughness it took to survive there. While most MCs would have approached that subject matter with shows of force, Snoop took exactly the opposite tack: his flow was laconic and relaxed, massively confident and capable of rapid-fire tongue-twisters, but coolly laid-back and almost effortless at the same time. Coupled with his inventive rhymes, Snoop's distinctive style made him a superstar before he'd even released a recording of his own. Dre's rhymes weren't quite as intricate, but his booming baritone provided a nice counterpoint, supplying oft-quoted catch phrases like "put the smack down." The sound, style, and performances of "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" were like nothing else on the early-'90s hip-hop scene, and its impact was tremendous, with mainstream hip-hop trying to imitate it and the rest of The Chronic for at least four years afterwards. An edited version of "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" was released as a single and climbed all the way to number two on the pop charts in the spring of 1993 on its way to platinum-level sales, giving Dre his biggest hit ever and sending The Chronic on its way to sales of over eight million copies."

Depeche Mode - "Enjoy the Silence" / "Mephisto"(918 Points, 13 Votes)Year: 1990
US Chart Position: #8 / #2 Dance / #1 Modern Rock
UK Chart Position: #6 / #7 in '04
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #25 (year), #152 (decade), #1115 (all-time)
AMG Says: "Longtime underground favorites for their pioneering use of synthesizers in alternative rock, Depeche Mode finally scored their first (and only) Top Ten single in the U.S. with "Enjoy the Silence," the second single from their 1990 best-seller Violator. "Enjoy the Silence" begins with a melancholy ballad feel in spite of the busy bass lines underneath; a clean-toned guitar plays a haunting melody over synthesizers mimicking a gothic choir. The electronic beats begin to kick in with greater prominence during the first chorus, and immediately afterwards there is a funky percussion break which alerts the listener to the song's rhythmic underpinning. When the rest of the instrumentation returns, it's suddenly just as danceable as it is gloomy. The lyrical subject matter of "Enjoy the Silence" is typical Depeche Mode bleakness, in this case with a more personal slant. Its main point is that the more people talk, the more likely they are to hurt each other, and so a sense of doom hangs over the romance alluded to in the chorus ("All I ever wanted, all I ever needed is here in my arms/Words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm"). On a deeper level, "Enjoy the Silence" suggests that getting to know someone more intimately destroys any romantic illusions about them, and the singer seems to prize those illusions as a form of perfection that doesn't exist in the outside world. It's a little solipsistic and all very dramatic, but the music supports those ambitions with a chilly sadness and an austere grandeur that perfectly expresses the sentiments of the lyrics."
