The Cure - "Friday I'm in Love"Year: 1992
US Chart Position: #18 / #1 Modern Rock
UK Chart Position: #6
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #29 (year), #304 (decade), #1804 (all-time)
AMG Says: "When the Cure's "Friday I'm in Love" started to appear on radio in 1992, it was refreshing to hear such a perfect pop song amid all the impending doom and gloom of the so-called grunge years and to also note that the masterful band — under Robert Smith's guidance — had lost nothing off its fastball. Here again was a delectable melody, a clever lyric, and a singular blend of sounds, with whimsical production quirks, from a 12 year-old band that seemed to be able to write and record such chestnuts at will. Granted, the meat of "Friday I'm in Love" (if there is much at all to this confection) is nothing new; at its heart it is a very traditionally structured pop song. But the Cure wrap up the mix of pop melody and lyric, guitar lines, synth washes, and vocal layers in such a singular style that it only takes the opening measure to identify it as a Cure song [...] The single was a radio hit from Wish and brought in a whole new legion of fans for the Cure, but in an invective swipe at the music industry suits, who he implied pull such radio-ready singles as "Friday I'm in Love" from him, Smith commented in an interview with Musikexpress/Sounds in 2000:
"The people who like "Friday I'm in Love" aren't actually fans of the Cure. They're not the ones who buy my records.""Can Be Most Easily Found On:

I think the quote would be more accurate if he had simply said "the people who
only like "Friday I'm in Love" aren't actually fans of the Cure," because that sure sounds like what he meant. I mean, by the time
Wish rolled around, I'd already bought five or six of their records.

Green Day - "Basket Case"Year: 1994
US Chart Position: #16 Top 40 / #9 Mainstream Rock / #1 Modern Rock
UK Chart Position: #55 / #7 in '95
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #33 (year), #267 (decade), #1629 (all-time)
AMG Says: ""Basket Case" is a simple, catchy rocker full of the sneering punk attitude passed down by the Sex Pistols, as well as the unabashed melodicism of older punk-pop groups like the Buzzcocks, the Jam, and the Descendents. Of course, Green Day's sensibilities are much more beholden to the '90s; "Basket Case" is obnoxious yet witty, potentially dark in subject matter yet cheerful in execution, with a self-absorbed yet endearingly self-aware narrator [...] "Basket Case"'s humor was rooted in the sort of bored, directionless, self-conscious angst that overtook a sizable portion of white American youth as the '90s wore on, but the endearing likability that resulted wouldn't have mattered much if the song hadn't been so jam-packed with memorable hooks. And it was, making it a sizable success on MTV and on modern rock radio, where it topped the air play charts for several weeks in the summer of 1994 and became Green Day's biggest hit to date."

Nirvana - "Sliver" / "Dive"Year: 1990
US Chart Position: #19 Modern Rock
UK Chart Position: #90 (charted pre-"Teen Spirit")
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #42 (year), #385 (decade), #2251 (all-time)
AMG Says: "Kurt Cobain often said he had a lousy childhood, which had a lot to do with why he became a perpetually grumpy adult. For some reason, Cobain didn't write about his difficulties in growing up very often, but on "Sliver" he took a routine childhood trauma and turned it into one of Nirvana's best-recorded performances (and certainly the high point of their pre- Nevermind work [...] Cobain's angry wail turned out to be the perfect voice for his petulant child's temper tantrum, and the mixed terror and joy in his voice as he cries, "I woke up in my mother's arms" ranks with his finest moments on plastic. Chris Novoselic's buoyant bass line melds pure pop and driving rock with ease, and Dan Peters (on loan from Mudhoney) does a great job on drums. "Sliver" was also notable the A-side of the last single Nirvana released on Sub Pop before making the jump to the major-label pastures of Geffen Records (where it later appeared on the compilation Incesticide); the song was tracked by Jack Endino in only an hour using the band Tad's equipment while they were on a dinner break."

Rage might be in trouble. That's pretty much their big song (and 'Bulls On Parade' is for the next poll). I imagine we'll see 'Bullet In The Head' and 'Bombtrack', but if this one was so low, then we might not. Were those other songs much bigger in the USA?

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under the Bridge"Year: 1991
US Chart Position: #2
UK Chart Position: #26
Acclaimed Music Ranking: #6 (year), #27 (decade), #248 (all-time)
Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #95
AMG Says: "The Chili Peppers’ Hillel Slovak, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Seven Year Bitch’s Stephanie Sargent; these names have become synonymous with the wasted destruction that heroin brought to an entire generation of alternative rockers. It’s fitting, then, that the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ own ”Under The Bridge” has become the poster-child by proxy for all those lost souls. The song is front man Anthony Kiedis’ autobiographical revisiting of the LA landmark where he once purchased his own drugs. He has called ”Under The Bridge” “this really sad thing, sort of sensitive”. That poignant sentiment is self evident among the simple guitar which cradles the introductory verse, and the sense of fragility that is only doubled by the still down-tempo choral crescendo. ”Under The Bridge” was the band’s first big American hit when it tipped the charts at #2 in April, 1992. Since that time, it has become an integral part of the 1990’s alterna-landscape, and remains one of the purest diamonds that sparkle amongst the rough-hewn and rich funk chasms that dominate the Peppers’ own oeuvre."
