This might be the year that I fully investigate the Afghan Whigs. I think I own 1965 and maybe Gentlemen, though somehow don't recall having heard them all the way through. All I know for sure is that a girl I used to work with at a record store put "66" on a mix CD she made for me. Good times.

1965 is so good it's insane. both dulli and lan were on absolute fiyah in 98

black love is pretty damn good, but that last song on it is so great it overshadows rest of it
HandBanana
I dont really dislike 1965, but it really seems like the weakest of the "big three" from them.
When I first heard Gentlemen and Black Love, they felt like challenging to get in to. So much noise and many rough edges. All that seemed sanded off on 1965 and I think that affected my appreciation for it.
Still a good record, but its always felt lesser to me.

Totally agree. It was a somewhat disappointing end to the Whigs. Luckily Dulli has surpassed it a few times with the Twilight Singers.

anyone else think Bulletproof off Black Love is like one of the best songs of all time?

when the drums and that riff come in after a while... SO so good
The Sheck
That three song run from Bulletproof to Black Love is so good. Just the way the tension builds and all.
solace
great live version of Bulletproof where they segue into Where Did Our Love Go?

HandBanana
"Bulletproof" is the "Now You Know" of Black Love.

But I think "Now You Know" is stronger individually while "Bulletproof" is in a better sequence of tracks.
solace
anyone see them on that last tour opening for Aerosmith?

that must have been quite the WTF
HandBanana
A friend of mine met them here in Sac on that tour.
Basically they were like "what are ya gonna do? say no? We grew up on to Aerosmith."

HandBanana

Saw 'em twice on the 1965 tour, but skipped that last leg when they opened for Aerosmith.

Pretty much. Such a great album and Faded is possibly one of the best closing tracks of all time.

Also, Dr. Bill obviously has shit taste in music but hey, you get what you give.
Undercooked Sausage
BLACK LOVE IS ALRIGHT BUT THE LAST TRACK I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO.

THIS THREAD CAN NEVER DIE.

The Gutter Twins album is the most underrated of the year. Kind of like Congregation is one of the most underrated albums ever.

Correct. Middle of my top 10. took about two listens to grow, but it absolutely did.
Madrox
oh yeah 'congregation' is sick

every day i have a favorite whigs album but tbh it's usually between that and 'gentelemen" although '1965' sometimes sneaks in and 'black love' is of course a ball buster

gutter twins album was one of my favorite things i heard this year too late to vote for in the albums poll... totally solid and super drrty

afghan whigs have always been one of my favorites, this is a good thread to see

Is it true they did a cover of Little Girl Blue? It's showing up on all the lyric sites, but I can't find them doing it anywhere, not even YouTube. Anyone got a link to hear it?

Awesome, many thanks.
The Sheck
All right, maybe someone can help me out with this.

There were a few different CDs of the single '66' that came out. One is a radio promo, another has covers of Hole's 'Miss World' and 'Papa Was A Rascal' by James Booker, and another with those songs plus a version of '66' with background vocals and a breakdown in the middle of Prince's 'Little Red Corvette.' I'm looking for that last version. Gemm.com doesn't appear to have it. Do any of you Whigs fans have a copy they'd want to upload here?
masterofsparks
I love their version of "Creep." (TLC, not Radiohead)
