Can probably do that tonight.

I need to hear as many versions of "My Curse" as possible. I keep re-trying on Slsk and all the live versions aren't available right now... gah.

But anyways, this song.
HandBanana
I have the live Twilight Singers DVD, and on it they do "My Curse" and bring out Marcy Mays to sing on it.

Thats a fuckin great DVD by the way.

Also, RE: Gentlemen. "Now You Know" is fucking epic. It seems like just a little bit more punch in the mix would have helped, but the build up to "my sweetness, my everything" still gives me the goosey-bumps.

The opening lyric of Since you're aware of the consequences I can pimp what's left of this wreck on you gives me chills even after 1 million listens.

This song took the longest to click with me out of all the Gentlemen tracks.

Oddly enough, my favorite part of the song is at the very, very end. The "NOW IT'S THROUGH" when the instruments cut away and "I Keep Coming Back" just rolls into town and completely destroys every emotion I've ever managed to feel, OH GOD, IT'S FUCKING GREAT, SHIT.

I'm downloading Black Love right now, by the way.

I also like how Dulli will "echo" lyrics and themes throughout the album.
"Sombody's goin down" > "Told ya somebody's goin down" etc.
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و ب
amazing moments on Gentlemen:

- the title track in general
- the main guitar riff kicking in on "Debonair" (still chill-inducing)
- Marcy Mays

HandBanana
Only ever saw the video for "Debonair" one time, and that was at the video club at Medusa's back in fall 93 when the single was out.
The scene with the kegger fight was awesome. Ive since read that Dulli said that was unplanned. Just happens when ya get dudes and booze together.
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و ب
video for "Debonair" is terrible, video for "Gentlemen" is great.

God sent Gentlemen to us. That's Adam and Eve on the cover. My #1 record of all time easily.

The devil sent Black Love.

In fact, I think not EVER listening to Gentlemen is such a fucking crime I'll hand deliver copies to anyone that needs one.

I think it is brilliant. Lekman has been the biggest surprise of the year for me. Up until a week ago I'd never heard anything by him and now can't stop listening. And it was immediate too. It didn't take any time to warm up to or grow on me. I'm listening to "You are the Light" right now.

I got about 4 CDs worth of B-sides, alternate takes, and the like. Apparently since I'm on a Mac, when I ZIP something, PCs are unable to read it (don't know what that's about). If someone can suggest an alternate way to do this, I'll gladly share all that I have.

Looking over the tracklist, I see the Uptown Avondale and What Jail Is Like EPs are on this collection. I think think think this is everything that's out there, except for the remixes and radio mixes of '66,' which I am unable to find anywhere. Greg throws a breakdown of Raspberry Beret in the middle (the performance of this version is on Conan O' Brien in 1998...the episode is famous because Triumph The Insult Comic Dog made his first appearance at the Westminster Dog Show here)

Shit, dude. Thanks a ton. I've been wanting to hear that ever since first discovering that it existed on July 1st, 2006 (aka "the day Bobthesquid posted the tracklisting for his Whigs rarities/covers comp.") So pumped to listen.

EDIT: Shit. This is fucking great and will probably end up as one of my most played songs in iTunes. Just a prediction.
The Luscious Phil
Gentlemen is the only album that I would call "perfect."

The sequencing is perfect. The flow is perfect. The lyrics all unite around one subject and explore every angle of the darker side of love, thus making this album unbelievably cohesive - it feels like an "album" should. The songs are just all so damn gutwretching. The artwork is perfect.

THIS ALBUM IS FLAWLESS.

Ha, I must not have realized just how much I truly desired that recording.

Listening to it again right now. Such a fantastic song. Maybe my favorite song on Gentlemen. But then there are the other ones. Gah.

I am forever in debt to norton for mailing me his unwanted (wtf?) copy of Gentlemen.

I can't believe I even bothered to look for who bumped this, as if there would be any question

fucking lol @ me starting this thread

I'm in the camp that Black Love is their best album and Gentlemen is not far behind. Both are top ten worthy.

So what is everyone else's opinion on the Twilight Singers output? I think "Blackberry Belle" is a great underrated album and the all covers "She Loves You" is damn good as well/ Other opinions?
The Sheck
Yeah, Blackberry Belle is their best. Followed by Powder Burns, then the cover album, then Twilight... for me.

What do people think of the 2 new Whigs songs on 'Unbreakable?'

Both Gentlemen and Black Love feel like films, in the way it's set up. I love how in the liner notes, it's never 'Recorded At....' It's 'shot on location.' wink.gif

I wish more bands would attempt something like this on albums.

My intense love for this album is somewhat baffling. Dan was talking to me on AIM and was like, "You had Gentlemen really high on your all-time list. I mean, it's awesome, but you just had that shit so high." There's just something about this record... the lyrics are a huge thing here, the words coupled with Dulli's delivery... very adult, you know? You imagine him being sensitive and romantic, but also violent and pissed off, the kind of balance that so many young men want to have apply to themselves. Simultaneously tear jerkin' and beer drinkin'. Lots of young people like stuff like In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and Joy Division because there's a lot of lyrical depth and shit, and they want to identify with it so badly, really project themselves as these deep individuals who feel the emotions in the songs. And they might be full of shit, but there might actually be some truth there. That's how I feel about Gentlemen. There's a lot of emotion in this music, and I might not properly "identify" with it, but I completely see where Dulli is coming from (or could conceivably be coming from.) It was when I started to really see those layers that I started to really love the album. Afghan Whigs... I couldn't really tell you anything about them, except that the singer/guitarist is Greg Dulli and that they were in Beautiful Girls and my english teacher used to be in a garage punk band called Snyders of Berlin whose members were friends with the Whigs right before they got signed to Sub Pop, but the Snyders didn't know what Sub Pop was and so they ended up ultimately failing as a band because they were so drunk and stupid. I still haven't heard Black Love. Or Congregation. But I know this album. Better than almost any other album. I can't listen to one song without hearing all of the other songs, even if they're played out of order. I'm glad that I have the relationship with this album that I do.

I put it on my friend's iPod a while back and he said that he listened to it and thought that it was "kind of boring." And on one end, I just wanted to punch him in the face for not being able to comprehend this music that is such a huge part of me. But at the same time, I realized that I was the same way once. And when you consider the music on the album, it makes sense that it would initially come off as little more than "boring guitar rock." But somehow it all works (and I've learned to really appreciate Dulli's guitarwork over time.) This is indie rock at its most difficultly muscular, just a ridiculously masculine sound that is complemented perfectly by the lyrics, and it all makes Gentlemen essentially the Ultimate Cock Rock Album. Why the hell is Music Gurl a fan of this band???

Paves after basking in the wonderfullness that is Gentlemen do you really have to ask? HA!

Hey The Sheck, is that comp that you posted the one that circulated around The Congregation list a few years back?

This thread makes me sad because it reminds me how much of my Whigs' collection I lost back in June. sad.gif

A lot of Whigs/Dulli fans don't rate Twilight that high, but for me its The Twilight Singers best album. I just love it from beginning to end. Blackberry Belle is outstanding as well and is more of an Afghan Whigs sounding album. Maybe that's why Twilight does it for me - b/c it was such an unexpected change in sound. The covers album never really did much for me and Powder Burns is solid but does have some of the weakest songs Dulli's ever recorded.

Totally agree. This is the only really unique Twilight Singers album; after this, Dulli basically turned it into the Afghan Whigs Mark II, which is cool and all, but more of the same. Loved the original concept with Dulli, Shawn Smith and Happy Chichester, and adding the Filia Brazillia electronics was very cool. The tour for this album was also very unique and unlike what he's done since.

That being said, I very much like Blackberry Belle, and actually think Powder Burns is even better.

Is the Twilight Singers stuff really sparse and as much of a downer as people make it out to be? I love me some dark music and Dulli pulls that off as well as anybody, but I've been given the impression that the TS stuff is really kind of a drag.

Nah, it's great. Twilight is kind of moody and a bit trip-hoppy, but everything afterward is basically the Whigs with more prominent keyboards.

Songs like "Clyde", "Last Temptation" and "Annie Mae" - all off of Twilight - are some of my favorite songs Dulli's ever recorded.

My fave is probably "The Twilite Kid." I also prefer the original, solo piano version of "Black Love" that Dulli recorded for that "Monument Ave." movie he was in. The version that ended up on Twilight is good, but the adornments kind of dilute its power.
The Sheck
Yeah, the comp probably is the one off Congregation. I got mine off ebay 5-6 years ago, so I'm not 100% sure.
Undercooked Sausage
Listening to Gentlemen right now.

Amazing album.
MuteSuperstar
Nice to see mainly just varying degrees of love for the Whigs/Twilight here and no one dropping in and pretending to hate this stuff. Dulli's just an immense talent and has something to offer pretty much anyone.
Blackberry Belle's in my top 5 thus far this decade. Twilight fans definitely check out the track "They Ride" from the Stitch in Time EP, which was kind of an under-the-radar release. Awesome.

And 1965 is really goddamn underrated.
The Luscious Phil
So now is the time where we talk about how amazing 1965 is!!!!

"AFTER TONIGHT, I'LL NEVER WALK THE SAME, AND YOU'RE TO BLAME!"

this album sits in my top ten of all time. (with Gentlemen as #1, and Black Love in the top 50)
HandBanana
I reallly like 1965, but it just seems weak after Black Love.

In fact, Gentlemen isnt a weak album at all, but I think it feels weak next to Black Love too.

I'm about halfway through this album, and having a hard time believing that of the year and a half I've had this album, I've only listened to it maybe five times. Dangerously low, right now this album is communicating to me so much my tired mind can't take it all in, but I can't go to sleep because I have to hear it to the end. Gentlemen has always come off to me as one of those records that you'd have to listen to a hundred times before you really figured out why it's so genius, and I think that just clicked for me, this is a top ten album of the 1990s.

Fuck, Afghan Whigs, or at least Gentlemen, where the fuck are the other albums by these americans?

I"M A GENTLE MAAAAAAN

I'M A GENTLE MAAAAAAAAN

"Fountain and Fairfax" is fucking punishing, I was reading online a story about how before Dulli recorded this album, he was driving around late at night listening to an Elvis cover of Blue Moon, which sounded like "he's singing it from beyond the grave." Definitely can see that it made an impression.
