I watched this one and it was an eye opener. The success of the documentary seemed to rest on the pettiness of the artists involved, and the peripheral people who supported them (managers and a&r reps). Really I haven't given either the Dandies or Brian Jonestown Massacre much of a listen, but this doesn't seem to make me want to run out and buy either of their stuff. The Dandies seem obsessed with becoming rock stars, and Brian Jonestown act like deranged imbeciles. It made for a great documentary, with many lol moments.
Has anyone else watched this? what's your take on it?

Really a great doc. Really captures the scene. What really makes it great is that the director, I forget her name, followed them around for so many years and just so happened to stumble into the tragicomic world of Anton Newcombe...his slight rise and dramatic fall. She could just have easily latched on to some band who really didn't go anywhere....you know...not much of a story line. But this...this was gold.

Good documentary, but rather too sad for me. I don't get it: Anton comes across as the most honest, straight-up guy who has genuine talent with writing and performing, yet he didn't like his portrayal in the film.

Never listened to either band before I saw this last summer.
Dandies- Your average trendy, wicker park hipsters. hated their fucking guts, sound like a 60's cover band and dont have a memorable song. the only decent tracks are when they steal riffs. Whiny fucking twats, who weren't greatful for their moment in the spotlight. blame evrybody for their lack of sucess, the reason the major label dropped them is because their music sounds dated and sucks.
BJTM- Some good music, but that dude is really pathetic. Being a homeless junkie isn't cool, it's sad. Well it's not really sad when you think it's cool like that asshole did. I like some of the tracks they had even though some of it was very self-indulgent.
The Movie- I like it, I really dont watch many movies but most of them are documentaries. Their completly different, but 'DIG' is much better then that boring ass Wilco doc but it's nowhere near as good as 'Murderball'.

One of my favorite musical docs of all time. I loved it. Didn't know anything about either band going in but Anton's "character" sucked me right in. Great stuff. Ended updigging their tunes too. The Warhols not so much.

I thought Anton came across as a fruit loop, just missing toucan sam. The scene's with the band fist fighting were great. Anton kicking a fan in the face while live and on stage had me in the back of the crowd during the BJM show I went to soon after. Anton never really did it for me, whereas Matt Hollywood seems to be the reason Brian Jonestown was really good. If you listen to the new album you will see how much is lacking in his absence.
Great movie nonetheless, although it is nowhere close to "Those Fearless Flying Freaks". I am also very excited to see Michael Franti's new documentary about his travels through the mid east called "I know Im not Alone", Ive heard its incredible.

Ondi Timoner is her name. She gives a pretty good commentary from what I can remember. It did seem like she got lucky with a lot of the stuff. But I guess you are bound to get lucky following some people around for 7 years. I guess Anton posted a nasty letter about her on his website, but I guess he is not so mad anymore since he got a little exposure.
According to IMDB she is doing a doc on Jamaican music now. I can't wait to see the "anton newcombe" of rastas.

I mentioned this here before, but the doc reminded me of the movie Amadeus, with Anton as the inspired, talented (and very rude & unstable) "Mozart" to Courtney Taylor-Taylor's business-friendly, but somewhat mediocre "Salieri" - even to the point that the Salieri character narrates the film, and at heart is a fan of his nemesis.
I actually enjoy both bands, for different reasons. The movie's a real hoot, though - even if you hate the bands.

yeah, I'm surprised he had the tact to even pick up on how he was portrayed in the film after the fact.

I'm curious if anyone was a fan of BJM or the Dandies before watching this, and after were a little off-put by either group's personality, and did it affect the way you listened to their music. A rockumentary can be a great expose of the personalities involved within the group, and how it works.
I just got done watching the new Luna documentary, and they came off as relatively stable people. Polar opposite of Dig!, but still entertaining nonetheless.

Before the movie all I knew from the dandies was that bohemian like me song. I had no idea they were actually popular overseas though.
I had never heard one second of bjm before the movie. I checked them out a little bit afterwards, but it wasn't really my thing. Plus, I don't like guys who can play 100 instruments.

BTW, did anyone see the Gilmore Girls episode entitled "he's slippin' 'em bread, dig?". Well, that guy makes a cameo. The whole episode is kind of an homage to the doc "Dig", including a meltdown at an A & R showcase.

I love this movie. After I saw it I was like "Fuck I'm totally going to learn how to play guitar and just get a van and quit school TOUR CONSTANTLY." Never really panned out.
I've read interviews with Newcombe done post-Dig!, and he claims that the filmmaker completely took his actions out of context, edited the footage to create a character that isn't him at all, blahblahblah. Yet in each interview, he comes across as exactly the way he was portrayed in Dig!
Also, Matt Hollywood is like, my alter-ego, even though word on the street is he's kind of a fatty now.
