The Good Dr Bill
Same rules as the other polls. EPs count if they're both under five tracks and 20 minutes. Single discographies can generally be found on Rateyourmusic.com. If it's there it counts, if it's not it probably doesn't, however with this period, single status starts to get kinda sketchy, so a song basically counts as a single if:

1. It's listed as an actually released single on a reliable website (RYM, Discogs, etc.)
2. It has a specifically commissioned music video (not counting edited live clips, vids from albums where each song had a vid, etc)
3. It charted in either the US or UK charts (including US sub-charts)
4. It was made exclusively available as an individual track on the internet (mashups, blog phenomenons, etc)

That should cover it, I think.

What about things like mashups, and other Interweb phenomena? A lot of the great ones were never "released," officially, but they reached listeners every bit as emphatically as something pressed up and distributed to stores.

Stipulation #3 covers a lot of ground, considering all the great non-singles that made noise on the Modern Rock chart and such. Goody.
The Good Dr Bill
good point. Edited.
Pavement Ist Rad
Gee, my list of possible singles list contenders is fucking enormous compared to that of previous decade polls. So far, the bands with the most singles are Blur, Blink 182, Foo Fighters, and Pavement. So fucking excellent.
scarymuppet
Kiss my dick, I'm excited for this. With the exception of any Blink 182 making the list.
Pavement Ist Rad
Hey, Scary Muppet. Vote for for all of those completely unfuckwittable Jens Lekman EPs really high, okay? Because that's what I'm going to do.
scarymuppet
Sounds like a plan. Mayple Leefs 4 Lyfe.
More Drama
Thank fuck for UK editions of EPs which excise 15-minute remixes.

But I'll find a replacement for Ace of Base

you'll find a replacement for The Pixies, too. Song has to be both recorded and released in the given time period to be eligible.

StPhone's list has a lot of the same stuff as mine.

And he/she/??? posted Blood Guts & Pussy in the "Current Top Albums" thread, AND said that I (along with Burzum and Yancy) have the best music taste here.

It was out in 04-- scraped into the bottom of our 2004 top 50 singles list at p4k, then caught on with the staff so quickly that a month or so later it was voted into the bottom of our top 100 2000-04 singles list.

i'm hoping "a stroke of genius" will beat it out. here's a link, for those who haven't heard it:

Freelance Hellraiser - "A Stroke of Genius" (The Strokes' "Hard to Explain" + Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle")

Ugh, I just made my first list of songs and it came out to 1,014. Guess I'll have to cut that down a little.

i'd like to campaign for the following:

Wheat "I met a Girl"

Whiskeytown "16 days"

Ryan Adams "New York New York"

When voting for MCIS era smashing pumpkins singles, what exactly are we considering? Because I want to vote for Thirty-Three (among others) but I don't know if I should be considering the songs with it in TAFH box or just the song, considering it was never released as a "true" single, correct? But did have a video, had considerable airplay, etc... Like for instance the Zero disc and the 1979 disc have some awsome songs on there, too, but then again 1979 *was* released as a seperate single, as well, and the Zero single is really more of an EP than anything....

Anyone catching my drift here? Does it even matter?
BobtheSquid
"Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "1979," "Tonight, Tonight," "Zero" and "Thirty Three" were all commercially released singles.
thresholdofrevelation
Yeah, and the Zero single has like 7 songs on it and is was longer than whatever our limit is for EP's, 20 minutes right?

I mean I still think it should be considered a single but I just want to make sure I'm on the side of consensus.

Also, Muzzle charted as well so shouldn't that count? "Eye" charted as well but rateyourmusic doesn't list that, either.
The Good Dr Bill
all the Smashing Pumpkins singles are singles, and you can vote for up to three b-sides with them. You can also vote for TAFH as an album.

Sounds good to me, but trying to figure out where I'm ranking TAFH is going to fuck my mind up for a bit.

Reel Big Fish - "Where Have You Been"

It's not ska. Don't worry. Maybe the best thing they ever did. The bridge is absolutely glorious. And no horns! Classic.

wow Paves is right. like seriously dead on right. people, download this and listen to it.

nic
People should hold off making their lists until they've downloaded all those songs Undo posted, especially the Gerling one.

Also, please don't forget Roni Size/Reparent's "Brown Paper Bag". A true classic.
Mitchell
I know that those promos where bonafide radio hits in the US (I own them both too) they recieved airplay here too. I just think that if you really like those songs vote for Kid A, every other Radiohead single has at least one great b-side on it anyway. I pretty much consider the album to be single less myself, makes more sense with the ebb and flow on the record etc.

Just worried that with the amount of radio stations, making videos for album tracks and things like that if people look hard enough they can make anything look like a single. After the landmark of "Chicago" making the singles poll and the rule that allows bootlegs in even if they were never pressed onto vinyl just seems like the floodgates are open for everything. Is the Pixies' download only iTunes exclusive "Bam Thwok" eligible?
