It's interesting, because I just finally gave Sufjan some more good listens last night, and I really enjoyed Michigan and Illinoise, definitely more than Ys. Sufjan vs. Joanna is what made me want to listen to Illinoise, a well-reviewed album I hadn't given a shot for over a year.

Sufjan is easy to like, I think. Everything about what he does seems purposeful and constructed. You can argue all you want about how great Ys is, but the fact that she and Van Dyke Parks collaborated after-the-fact does not help the sounds cohesiveness.

While they did 'collaborate after the fact', Newsom said that she wrote all four of the string-enhanced songs with an orchestra in mind. She said she knew whe would need an orchestra to get the sounds that she wanted, and she was in total creative control during the collaboration with Parks. Its not like she just had these harp songs and was like 'lets see what some strings will do here'. With 'Sawdust and Diamonds', which she had written without strings in mind, they tried to put strings over it and she just didn't like the way it sounded tacked-on so she left it as just harp.

I feel like the strings are always OTM on Ys.... though I think debating 'which is better' Ys or Illionoise doesn't make much sense considering how different they are and how good they both are.

Hey, you.

What if this board was full of Brent D's and Scott Plagenhoefs? Ben Welshes and Roger Mexicos? I wouldn't be able to post here. I'm simply not smart enough to engage in wordy, intelligent discussion about things. And if it was filled with William Tells and Gil Scott-Heroins (UNDERRATED POSTER) and Damos... gee. Fuck. What if it was filled with Elcorazons? What the hell. I probably wouldn't even know about the board, then.

Don't they just talk about eating dead babies on Hipinion, anyway? Everyone's so pissed off there. And the music discussion... yow. One person will start a thread like, "CAPTAIN BEEFHEART IS HORRIBLE, ONLY RETARDS LIKE THIS SHIT" and then everyone will just be like, "YOU FUCKING SUCK, HE IS THE BOMB." And ILM is a bunch of Dominique Leones and Ned Raggetts and wow, I would just have no place there at all.

Now, SOMB... SOMB is the working man's message board. This is where the regular guys and girls are. It's only when the board becomes dominated by 1) Y-S-I leechers, OR 2) hardcore Sufjan fan types who also happen to have completely unremarkable (and sometimes obnoxious) personalities. It is when these posters dominate threads that this board really begins to alienate me.

I wasn't too serious either.

As long as we're on the subject, that picture is crazy. I guess the lack of make-up, and choice of color is meant to be an "only skin" tie-in.

Though I find it weird that she's wearing a pelt, when she seems to be an avid animal lover.

Who is your audience?

QUOTE("Joanna")
The most honest answer to that would be I have no idea. There were times in my life when I would Google myself and stumble across things that would leave me in a complete daze. There was someone who talked about the infantilization of women. My first thought was, If you’d give me an opportunity, I could rip their head off with fury and opinion that is so far removed from what they think I am.

Another interesting piece of writing, from Stylus' magazines review of Ys.

QUOTE
If Ys belongs with Animal Collective’s Feels and TV on the Radio’s Return to Cookie Mountain as a maturation of the production-conscious, willful “freak” zeitgeist to plain old indiedom, we’re in richer times than when the best indie had to offer was the fucking Arcade Fire.

Ouch. Especially considering Return to Cooking Mountain is completely half-assed.
Cinnamon P.
yeah, whats with everyone loving that TV on the radio disc anyway. it basically is a bag full of suck with maybe one boner-inducer. lame and gay put in a music blender.

I love Province, which all the reviews I read placed it as the one weak track on the album.

I Was a Lover and Playhouses is great too. Snakes and Martyrs is listenable. Wolf Like Me is very overrated. Anything after that I don't even want to listen to. To me, Cookie Mountain shows what they can do, not that they're especially great.

QUOTE("StylusMag")
I must be old. Adam Baker, the leader and head of Annuals, says that “Dry Clothes,” a joyous fever-smoke hum-along snuggled just inside of Annuals’ debut Be He Me, is about his fear of the dog in The Sandlot. The fucking Sandlot. I mean, I vaguely remember a fat child with really red hair and freckles like Saturn, and a fence, maybe that great American emblem of childhood fear—The Geriatric Neighbor in the broken house. Sure, I seem to recall the commercials, but I’ve never met anybody who’s seen it, let alone had their childhood tuned to the fright of its recreational torment.

Fucking Stylus.

I'm so confused. What's going on here? RtCM is so fucking good. 'I Was a Lover' is probably the best song I've heard this year. What the hell is there not to like about this album?

Vocals = bangin'
Production = bangin'
Bands that sound like this = 0

yeah, why does everyone feel the need to compare every indie album nowadays to Funeral just to prove a point. Ys sounds nothing like Funeral. At least the comparisons to Illinois were a little closer in the fact that both artists write huge songs.

Dudes, dudes... let's please not forget that my defense of TV on the Radio stemmed from this ridiculous quote from stylus that had everyone in an uproar. I didn't invoke funeral, the idiot stylus writer did!

I threw the last bit in to get a rise out of people because I know how revered (overrated?) that album is... obviously Return to Cookie mountain is not "exponentially better' than Funeral... just like 6x-8x as good.

I would maybe agree with that statement, although I have an affection for Astral Weeks and a strong dislike for YS. But from an objective viewpoint I wouldn't disagree; critics will probably still blow loads over Newsom years from now, wriiting about her originality and her unique voice. Naysayers like me will begrudgingly accept it as part of the canon. Then listen to good shit like the Exploding Hearts and Om.
