She's better by herself and with her band, though.

Why? Simply looking at the bands I like you will see originality combined with strong songwriting. Newsom is a perfect fit. Plus she's a nature freak. "Ys" sounds even more amazing in the mountains.

Oh man, I liked the second half of the set more. I mean, I've already seen Ys all the way through at Logan Square Auditorium and it was real cool last night with the symphony but we got three new songs (all written in first person narrative) and what the band did with the old material ("Peach Plum Pear, and Inflamitory Writ specifically) was fantastic.
And the new song she closed her second set with was the second youtube I posted
here. Great song, I wonder if it'll remain a solo or have any accompaniment on the album.
Great show last night, she and the band seemed to be in good spirits, interacting with the crowd and joking with each other throughout the second half of the night.

that's a pretty silly conclusion. i would tend to agree more with her self-assessment in Wire Magazine (from a 2006 interview as per Wikipedia) that it is "untrainable" aka sucky by traditional standards and she can't fix it.
not sure how it would be seen as an intentional schtick.

Exciting News from
Naturalismo. As summarized by Pitchfork:
Joanna Newsom Debuts New Songs at Secret California ShowIt's not too often that you get to hear about an artist playing a secret show that actually remains a secret. When Kanye West and Metallica showed up at SXSW, it was tough to get into either show since just about the entire town knew exactly where and when they'd set up shop. But when Joanna Newsom debuted about two hours' worth of new material this weekend, only about fifty people showed up. Somebody, at least, knows how to keep a secret.
According to Naturalismo, this past Saturday, Newsom played with Mariee Sioux at the Fernwood Resort in Big Sur, California. She played under a pseudonym, "The Beatles's". Devin Woolf from Naturalismo was at the show, and has a detailed account of it up here.
Woolf describes the show: "The makeup of her new songs combines the strong melodic presence of songs on The Milk-Eyed Mender with her continued instrumentational prowess and maturation beyond Ys. It was unclear how many of the songs covered in the course of the two and a half hour set would ever be recorded, but there was never a sour note or 'should be cut' moment to be heard. If anything a double album here would make perfect sense, and be one of the most enjoyable albums I've heard in ages."
According to Woolf, some of the songs stretched past 12 minutes, and Newsom played about a third of them on piano, with the rest on harp. Newsom's band played behind her, and the songs' arrangement included guitar, drum, banjo, and violin. She also played an encore of "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie".

I don't buy it. Watching her sing you can almost see her forcing that squeal out of herself, which is a shame because she's a great songwriter and lyricist, maybe the best around right now.

I've seen her live a couple times, I'll admit that on those first couple tours for
Milk-Eyed Mender her voice was straining much like it does on that album. But during the
Ys tour and the recent Chicago Symphony Orchestra show it's very obvious that she's taming her voice (or at least that shriek) way down. This is most obvious when she plays older songs like "Sadie".

I think her voice is pretty endearing. Especially on Ys, it makes me feel like I'm listening to a storyteller more so than a singer, which is appropriate for the content and length of the songs.

Oh yeah, I love the sound of her voice. I'm just saying I understand why some people would be put off by it during that first record/tour, but those people (my mother's one of them) should give her another chance, because it's not the same voice.

i saw her play at the Sydney opera house and it was one of the best gigs i have seen
she played Y's from start to finish with the sydney symphony orchestra and then came out and did some stuff from milk eyed mender and then some new stuff
i think Y's is a fantastic record
it sounds amazing and the songs are brilliant
it is miles ahead of milk eyed mender

This is completely random, I know, but.
I am listening to Ys right now, still on "Emily," and I'm wondering:
What would sexual relations with this album playing be like?
Like, would it be automatic and uncontrollable sobbing? Does anyone here have any experience?
Yeah, random.
It's 3 in the morning and I'm single, so.

I listened to this for the first time last week, I think.
It's an incredible experience to listen to. Sex with it? Hmmm...not sure I'd really appropriate it with that...
I have to say, though, that its meandering balladry, whilst endearing at the beginning of the record, grows a tad tiresome by the fifth track...I just got to the point where I really wanted her to change the pace a little.

^I can agree with this. Something closer to Milk Eyed Mender would have been appropriate near the end.
