i know it's early, but there was decent interest in the hot stove thread about a somb fantasy baseball league. i'll set it up. i just want to know what people want.
should we do a 5x5 league or add other stats? do we want a regular batting order with a utility spot? starters and relievers or just regular pitchers? any other ideas?

I would be in for this. Options wise, I could care less. I just want to do some fantasy baseballing.

okay. go to
http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1 and click on "sign up now" (or whatever it says to get started). we have a custom league.
league id is #42857 and "sombie" is the password. look at the settings and let me know if you want anything changed. i'm sure our draft time will change once or twice.

Badass. I'm in. Let's rock.

If it were me, I'd have more designated pitching positions (4 or 5 starters, 2 or 3 RP & only 1 or maybe 2 undesignated positions). I would also clear up some bench spaces. Baseball is a long season and guys get hurt. I love the 3 DL spaces.
Edit: I think the 16 teams is way too many, esp with all the pitchers. I think you will need to decrease the number of pitchers or the number of teams (12).

right now, we have 25 players (+ 3 DL spots) on a roster. if anyone else is up for changing pitching designations, speak up. in other leagues i've done, a lot of people like to toy around with how they use their pitchers. the guy who won one of our leagues last year used maybe 3 starters all year, so i thought it'd give people some freedom.
16 is the maximum number of teams allowed. we could have 8 and it'd work.

Feb 7 2006, 02:31 PM
I don't mind the 16 teams....the more the merrier, but there aren't enough quality to average pitchers out there to sustain 16 teams with 11 pitchers each, imo. For 16 teams, I'd have 4 SP, 2-3 RP, 1 P...relievers are where you will run into the problems. Starters...not so much.

I'll politely wait & see if this board's veterans fill up the team slots but if there's any opening I'd most likely be interested...my rotisserie league draft is April 4th - this could spur me to do some much needed research & get a head start on the whole enchillada...

What do you think of having OBP as an offensive stat?
well, as of now, OPS is replacing batting average in a standard 5x5 league. if we added OBP, i suppose it'd make sense to drop OPS and add either SLG or BA. we'd also need to add another pitching category to make it 6x6. i have no problem with it. i'm open to any changes, as long as people are fine with it.

I hear that. I tend towards a bit more structure to prevent guys from running all the RPs early, but I see your line of thinking. I'm down for this, but I'd like to see maybe 1-2 more bench spots.
Well done so far and it is good to talk about this stuff now and work it out before we get too close to the start.
OPS? Sorry, I'm blanking here.

Feb 7 2006, 02:58 PM
OPS is On-Base Percentage + Slugging Percentage, which is a much better indicator of offensive productivity than Batting Average. the slight against it is it's on a 5-point scale instead of the traditional 1-point scale like Batting Average.

I'm in Nancies.
Can I please suggest to do OBP or AVG instead of OPS? I love OPS and I think it's a great indicator of a player's performance. But as it stands, it's a pretty power dominated selection of categories and it's going to come down to whoever's team hits more home runs (which benefit each category except SBs.) Right now, there's very little reason to have Ichiro, Juan Pierre, or Scott Podsednik because they're only benefitting one category.
Also, is there money on this bitch?
Also, what's everyone's favorite team?

Poe just took the 12th spot. I vote for playing for $20. And I second the idea that 4 SP, 2 RP and 1 P is the way to go for pitching lineups.
Also, does anyone else feel like we really need three DL positions? That's an awful lot.
I agree that OPS puts too much emphasis on power. I like OBP.
Favorite team: Detroit Tigers.
Favorite year: 1984.

is the march 15 8:00 CST draft time okay with almost everyone? yahoo just opened up some extra drafting times, so now would be the time to make a change. some people in another league i'm in don't want to draft during the world baseball classic, so i'm giving anyone who has qualms with march 15 to speak up.
and if you cannot make the online draft, please pre-rank. it makes things run a lot smoother.
