Does anyone know if there is anything in the works for Godspeed? Their first 3 releases were so good and Yanqui would have been good with some better production and that crazy loon. Does anyone know of any plans for a release in the next year or so? I miss my post-rock-orchestra for the apacolypse and I need more of it!

i think they're all in so many side projects that it's difficult to get them together. and after the disappointment of yanqui uxo, i haven't heard anything from their camp. they're a beast live (as long as they don't talk).

it was fairly dull in comparison to everything they had put out. New producer. it was very "political" but had none of the spoken word they were known for. it just didn't have much shimmer especially comming after Lift your Skinny Fists. in my opinion it was good but forgetable.

Yeah, I guess I'd rank it below Lift Your Skinny Fists and Slow Riot, but I still thought it was great. My only problem with it is that it was too dark and bleak to listen to most of the time. Where LYSF would take you out of a dark section with something huge and uplifting (but still just sad enough to fuck with you), YUXO just seemed to get darker and darker. Of course, I'm just working from memory here, haven't listened to either album in over a year, so maybe I need to reevaluate.
I really hope they tour again. As usual I was way late to the game and never got to see them live.

Hate to be the barer of bad news, but apparently they've called it day.
on February 08th the Montreal post-rockers announced they have split. Citing various reasons, including inter-band tension and the Iraq War, Efrim Menuck reveals in an upcoming interview on Drowned In Sound, that "on a personal level, I now find [Godspeed You! Black Emperor] to be inappropriate." While there has certainly been no talk of them reforming for some time (they have been on indefinate hiatus since 2003), many people had always held out for future releases.

Bands like Godspeed, I could never see being all that enjoyable live. To listen to said albums I need near complete silence to truly enjoy it. With a live show there will always be some sort of distraction, whether it be a drunk jackass in front, or just quiet chatter in the back. That said, seeing Godspeed would definitely be a highlight of all the shows I've seen, unfortunately I'm stuck seeing A Silver Mt. Zion with efrim's awful voice, but I at least wanna see godspeed in some form.

Silver Mt. Zion has some good moments, but overall is pretty bland I think. Godspeed was amazing. I thought yanqui was amazing. I don't think anything has topped Dead Flag Blues since it was released years ago in terms of pure desolate beauty.

The new A Silver Mt. Zion record is my favourite thing they've done by a ways. Gorgeous, heavy hitting, impassioned. Unlike pretty well anything I've heard before. Nearly on the level of Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven in my opinion. They also put on the best live show I've seen by a mile, though they were joined by Patti Smith for that, which likely boosted it a tad. Still, incredible band, though all in all I do prefer GY!BE.
Pity that they've ended the hiatus like this. I was holding out optimistic hope that they would return, release a new record, and tour.

Always loved Godspeed. Still do. Saw them one of the nights they played the Abbey on their last tour. Easily among the best shows I've ever seen. Probably the most powerful and moving music I've ever heard performed live. When the hiatus hit I always suspected they wouldn't get back together. Those people seemed to be uncomfortable with even the slightest amount of fame. They're more than a little pretentious. I know they have an absurd amount of spin off bands, and while some of them are good, none really hold a candle to Godspeed.

Pretty big fan of Goddy, but it's hard to be upset about them splitting when their last album was a lifetime ago and I wasn't expecting another one anytime soon. Like if Fugazi announced a permanent split, I'd be upset at not getting to see them again, but at this stage what does one expect?

It's A Silver Mount Zion now I check but you know what you're getting, alright. Chessnut was off my radar and this record crept out with virtually no press at the end of last year. I was tipped off in an interview Michael Gira did in The Wire. He said he couldn't listen to it because he knew it was going to influence him.

I'll be honest, I was hoping for something more sordid, like unearthed photos of James D in Super Mario cosplay.
You know, I didn't become a fan of Mario 64 until it was re-released on DS with that shithead Yoshi.
Also, I've been listening to GYBE! all week long, just the first song of each disc of "Lift Your Skinny Fists..." Hey, TS, remember when I kept listing it in Best Album threads and was constantly typing it out as "Lift Your Skinny Wrists..." and you had to keep correcting me? The sad thing was I knew full well what the title was, just somewhere between it going from brain to screen it got derailed.
