السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و ب
it's still got some edge to it, and the whole creepy vibe is still there. It just kind of swirls around instead of punching you directly in the face.

I don't know how to describe things.

The Deftones make me wonder why more metal bands don't care about sounding pretty or atmospheric. Seems like it makes for a good mix.

there are lots of good nu-metal songs

Grudgingly agree, but there are NOT lots of good nu-metal bands.

It's refreshing to see nu-metal get anything resembling props on the board. Nu-metal (the good stuff, absolutely) holds a special place in my heart and I chafe at its metamorphosis to "guilty pleasure by default."

because then you wouldn't be able to really feel their pain

It's not about pain, it's about POWAH. Deftones & some others are confident enough to allow room for both.

Hey GDB, you're right--I posted Vulgar Display of Power, not Around the Fur. I'll do that today.

The Deftones make me wonder why more metal bands don't care about sounding pretty or atmospheric.

One reason is that Metal is inherently not a 'pretty' style of music.

Also, there are quite a few bands who do go for 'nice' (or whatever term), like Kayo Dot, Pelican, Cave In, Boris (check out Flood, for a start) and Everlovely Lightningheart.

That it is. Completely pointless. My rating would have been an 8 instead of a 7 had that track not been on there.
[/quote]
ouch 7????

I know its not a 10 I'm not that dillusional

I figured a solid 8

To me each album is a 10 before you start playing it divided by the songs SNW has 12

1 is shit Pink Cellphone

1 is instrumental not my thing

1 Rats seems redundant after "Rapture" which is a better more focased thrash number

so 1.2 x 3 = 3.6 12-3.6 = 8.4 or a solid 8

Sorry, kids, but it's not doing as much for me as I'd hoped it would. sad.gif

It's not a complete failure. I like the sound and the production values (and was surprised at that aspect, because when I'd heard Bob Ezrin was twisting dials, I was leery, being as loyal to Terry Date as I am. But Ezrin gets a much cleaner, differentiated sound out of them, which fronts the vocals and brings out nice interplay). And it has moments - I like "Hole in the Earth," I really like "Beware" (surprised, actually , that in looking upthread, I didn't see this one mentioned - love the amazing, Helmet-inspired bass riffage at the end). "Mein" is good, too. "Cherry Waves" doesn't really grab me as much as everyone else. "Pink Cellphone" is an insult to the record buyer. "KimDracula" is decent. But all in all, few of the songs stick with me, and it sort of washes over like a B-rate Hum record.

I'm gonna give it a few more chances. But so far I'm semi-disappointed. I'd give it 6.2 of 10.
wh1tep0ny
Is only Ezrin getting credit as producer??

cuz all of Chinos vocals were recorded by Shaun Lopez of Far at his studio in Sacramento

Chino was not happy with Ezrin at all
throughsilver
I listened to it tonight (the remnants may still be visible on my scrob list) and I was very impressed. Maybe I needed to take an album off (well, it worked with Incubus), because this was a set of really good, quite varied, rock songs. Err, and 'Pink Cellphone'. But anyway...

Much prefer it to White Pony (though it's admittedly lacking the standouts like 'Elite' and 'Passenger'), but not as endearing as their debut. Because giving numbers to describe albums is not completely dumb*, I'll dole out 7.375954

*It is really, but what can you do happy.gif

Yeah, both guys get credit, Ezrin as producer, Lopez gets the "vocals produced by" nod.

Definitely a grower. I can see the damn thing growing as I type.

Anyone else hear as much Helmet as I do on this? Not in the atmospheric shoegazing sensibilities, but when it's time for a crunchy riff, the homage is definitely there.

The first five tracks are a solid run.

"Do you like the way the water tastes?"
Vivian Darkbloom

Sorry to keep talking to myself in here, but just wanted to inform anyone interested that I've decided I fucking love this record. Re-evaluation means a reassessment of the lukewarm initial reaction. Let's bump that 6.2 to a 7.5 and climbing.

I think they've really achieved that perfect balance between shoegaze and metal that Wh!te Pony spoke of upthread. Also, the more I listen to it, I finally hear the Cure influence that they've always claimed. There's something in the guitar tones that's vaguely Disintegration-era-esque, especially in "Hole in the Earth" and "Cherry Waves."

What shall we call the successful marriage of "Chinos' tastes (smiths, Cure, MBV) and Stephens ( Mastadon, Slayer, Meshuggah )" that Wh!te Pony spoke of?

Nu Wave, of course.

i listened to "White Pony" for the first time in ages this morning and definitely do not understand why i didn't like it so much. it's really a solid disc. i still prefer "around the fur" just because of the raw crunchiness of it all, but "white pony" is pretty fab.

it made me realize that i need to hear this new one immediately. anyone want to hook a derek up?

"Rapture" is a great track, and "Hole in the Earth" is awful. That's all I've heard so far; I guess it merits a listen.

Elastico batting .500 in this post. "Rapture" is a great track, but so is "Hole in the Earth." The latter takes their sound in new, elegiac direcions. For some reason, I think of "Plainsong" from the Cure's Disintegration when I hear this opener. Both are big, spacious, melodic tracks that promise great things to come. And both albums deliver on that promise.

This is clearly the record they were trying to make last time...

"KimDracula" sounds like Smashing Pumpkins, kinda...
wh1tep0ny
Kimdracula sounds like AWESOME

to me Chino is a frontman in the vein of Cobain

he's gonna be awesome to watch and if he actually sounds goof that night it's a bonus

I saw Cobain in both states

and Chino in many and even at his worst I still was captivated, especially at a show at the Cattle Club. It was toward the end and the kitchen dude jumped on stage to tell him his wife was on her way to the hospital to deliver their first child. He announced it and said they could only do one more and this was for his kid so "no rules"

the place went ape shit it was the most terrifying and thrilling experiance I've ever had at a club show

helmet52
Don't mean to bump. I'm late to the party. I've been sitting on 10 other records that I needed to get to. I finally got to the Deftones last night, and I must say I like it alot. Its too early to tell where this ranks among the others, but I just want to say I'm pleased. I think Abe is slightly underutilized on the skins for my taste, but that a minor complaint.

Very nice job from a consistent band in a vilified genre that they're often (undeservedly) lumped into. Thumbs up Deftones! smile.gif

Hey, there's a new Deftones album coming out this year. Nice surprise!

Eros is the title, according to Blabbermouth...
Dread
Given their big delays of the previous two albums, I'm still a little hesitant to believe this thing will be out the in fall. A new Deftones album just two years after their last? Come now. It does seem like they're actually getting things done though. It'll be interesting to see what they do, especially since Chino isn't playing guitar on this one.
Vivian Darkbloom

Bump for the slab's continued excellence and general Eros anticipation. Anyone heard anything?
Stop Breathin'
No, but I'm itching.
James D
Mark me as being excited as well. I liked the last one and am quite surprised that there's going to be another album so soon (in Deftones time).

There's actually going to be some really cool releases in this 2nd part of the year. This, a new Bronx double album, Mastodon, Made out Of Babies - and a bunch more I'm sure.

Saturday Night Wrist is excellent, their best since White Pony (unless Sunday Night Wrist refers to some collection of B-Sides and rarities I'm unaware of).

Yeah, Abe is a fucking beast. The beats in White Pony are so awesome. The intricacies are so well placed.

Rocket Skates is amazing

My favorite band still. I used to think the S/T release was the weakest now it's my 2nd favorite and Chi is missed but Sergio fits in nicely and will be interesting to see what he brings to the table in the studio.

Abe is God-like on drums and much shorter in person, comes up to my shoulder and I am not tall.

S/T and Saturday Night Wrist are both better then alot of people remember and give them credit for.

OK, its official. Based on the recs of people from this thread, I am going to give s/t and SNW the time they deserve. I'll report back in two weeks from today (if not sooner) with opinions on them. I love the first three records (especially White Pony) but never gave the last two a chance. We'll see how it goes.
spiritofeden
after White Pony, i could see viewing the 2 followups as disappointments.

however, going back to them, they are very fine records.
tutpsu
Other than Beware, Cherry Waves and KimDracula, I find SNW pretty forgettable. The songs aren't bad. There's just a lot of retread. The self titled record is interesting to me because it seemed like they focused on one dynamic of the band - bombastic, sometimes plodding, wall of guitar songs - and made a whole album like that. The cover art is perfect for it. It's a very "metal" album.

I agree, it's probably all downhill after White Pony. That thing is a masterpiece. The new single sounds like it could be an outtake from the WP sessions. That's far from a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. I like that they're always interested in trying new things out and I'm excited to see where they go on the new album.

Also, holy shit did Chino shed some lbs or what?

spiritofeden
holy shit. did he ever. pretty stoked to hear this album now.

Is that the White Pony logo on his necklace? That is pretty lame.

I'm starting SNW right now and so far its been pretty good. Maybe there is something to revisiting the latest two after the initial dispositions (because of following White Pony) have worn off. We'll see.

Also, how great is this band live? I've seen them twice (both in the early 00s [god, that seems like so long ago]) and they were pretty great.

caught them at the roseland in nyc (with glassjaw) in 2000.

havent really spun the last 2..will have to dig em out.

I saw them a couple of times when I was in high school and they were really intense. I also caught them on the SNW tour and it was one of the most high energy shows I've ever been to. They hadn't lost anything in the years between. A really fun concert every time.

Interesting pairing. In listening to SNW today, I kept thinking about Glassjaw (who I haven't spun in probably six months or so). I'm sure GJ was inspired by the Deftones, but I wonder if the opposite is true?
