Deftones
So, the album has officialy fished (as far as Wikipedia entries can be official), and even though I'm not a big Deftones fan, and couldn't really like their previous albums, I do think this album is quite good.
As any other indie fan who casually ran into Deftones, I liked some of their songs (Minerva stands out), but couldn't listen to their albums as a whole. However, SNW seems to be one of the better LPs I've heard recently.
In relation to previous albums by Deftones, SNW is more shoe-gazey, got stronger melodies, and is less "heavy". In some moments it really reminded me of Hum. Tracks 1 to 7 are all very good, while "Rapture" and "Mein", together with the first single, really stand out. I immediately liked everything I heard, and I got the impression the album is very accessible.
There's a minor drop in quality near the end of the album - "Rats! Rats! Rats!" (too intense, less melodious) and "Pink Cellphone" (utterly strange) don't even grow on me, and thats after the sixth listen or so.
Overall, it has that Deftones sound, but its also quite different. I'm curious what the fans, and "White Pony" fans in particular, will think of this album. After all, the reason I like it that much might be the same one that will turn other people off.

Wh1te Pony to thread...
Curious about this. The "shoegaze" comment is interesting. Chino always cites MBV and Cocteau Twins as an "influence," but their cover of "Wax and Wane" seems really phoned in to me.
Anyone else heard the leak?

It is no White Pony that is for sure
every band has to have their "masterpiece" and Wh1te P0ny I'm sure will be theirs until they cease to exist
as one of the biggest Deftones fans in the world (been watching them since 93 back in Sacto at the Cattle Club) I must admit their fourth album Deftones took me a while to get into I was hoping for a whitepony repeat
since then I've grown to love it
after just a few spins of SNW I'm already digging most of it (Cherry Waves, Xerxes, Mein, Combat, Rapture, Beware and Pink Cellphone) the rest will surely follow.
as far as shoe-gazey it's been noted many times by Chino without the Cure or the Smiths he would of never been a singer
the Deftones are at their best when they find the perfect balance between Chinos' tastes (smiths, Cure, MBV) and Stephens ( Mastadon, Slayer, Meshuggah )
I also think Hole in the Earth is a grower but still sorta weak
Maverick is horrible at picking singles where Deftones are concerned
in fact I think Deftones succede inspite of Mavericks horrible execution

thats quite spot on.. to me it seems like SNW leans more towards Chinos' taste, which might explain why I like the album that much, even though it's not "Deftones at their best", to your definition.

what's wrong with that??
I mean does anyone love Wilco or Smashing Pumpkins more then Chicago Natives?
It's only natural to take pride in an act from your hometown, however when I began my hero-worship of Deftones I was 1 of maybe 30 loyal fans. I never dreamed they would be on a National scale though I believed they deserved to be from the first abrasive chord and tortured shriek
and to me most lyrics can be found pretensious when one isn't a fan of the chosen band and brilliant when one is

My initial post was a not-so-successful joke on how "Saturday Night Wrist" is suggestive of masturbation, not a diss on Sacto as a City (I have a number of clients up there and have nothing but love for the town and it's people).
And I'm all for heady, weird lyrics- it's just that Chino's read like High School Junior Year emo scribblings.

I'm enjoying about two thirds of this album, mostly when Chino's vocal melodies sound stronger than just a bunch of trite whining. There's some strong stuff, but after "Pink Cellphone", which is a complete waste of time, the album seems to peter out.

that's where I was at first (not sure how many times you've heard the album)
I agree Pink Cellphone is a joke track that should of never made the album- joke songs are for b-sides only imo
but I think 2 of the better songs come at the end Reverie and especially Kimdracula
Kimdracula has vocal effects and moods that remind me of Queensryche "Screaming in Digital"
vocal effects not ability - even as a Deftones fan I realize how limited chino is vocally
I'd love to know what 2/3rds your digging
I like all the tracks minus Pink Cellphone and the instrumental piece (I've always disliked intrumental rock music)

Okay, after letting this CD sink in, I think this is one strong album, I just might like it more than White Pony. The band can still push those ATF/WP buttons (whitepony's right, "Kimdracula" is excellent), but it's Chino's increasingly strong vocal melodies that make it so good. The first five tracks, especially. It does what the band obviously wanted to accomplish with the 2003 album, but the new disc is much more well-rounded. I still hate "Pink Cellphone", it's a complete toss-off, and is an unnecessary interruption. Other than that, I like it a ton.

It depends, sometimes you know right away, but others, like the Deftones, need plenty of time to settle in. I don't think Chino's sounded better than he does on this cd, the vocal melodies are very strong.

it's taken me the 3 years almost to Embrace their last one Deftones-Deftones
it wasn't so much a grower as I had to come to terms with the fact that they probably would never top White Pony
and while I say 3 years it's not like I listened to it every day and forced it
I would simply select a track and put em on various mix cds
through this I was able to find things in each track I liked save 1 or 2

I still haven't picked it up (though I plan to get it down in Hollywood tonight, go over to my sister's with the big speakers, open a nice bottle of Grenache, and get caught up). But one thing all of this Deftones talk over the past week has done for me has been to make me definitively revisit and evaluate the self-titled record. I've always been a little confused by the disappointment in this release- always kind of liked it myself, and now I'm a full-blown apologist. I definitely disagree that it's "a piece of trash,"
pace Solace. s/t is actually a pretty good record, and not as much as a "regression" as everyone bitterly complained. I like the direction that album moves, into gauzy shoegazer but re-asserting ATF-era heaviness. The best tracks (and on this record, I actually thought "Maverick" was a good all for a first single- what a HUGE sounding song). I like some of other the tracks too, notably "When Girls Telephone Boys" and "Hexagram." Record does trail off a bit, but not so much as to lose me completely.

My big problem, along with a lot of people, is "Pink Cellphone". I can get into this song, right up until it delves into the SCAT-stuff. This just never seemed to fit into any Deftones mindset... so it seems totally out-of-place here. It's still a decent song, but it's throwaway bullshit, ultimately.
