according to WXPN in PHilly. Just behind the Pixies, and just ahead of Patty Griffin. seems about spot on to me. biggrin.gif I'd flip Patty and the Pixies, but that's just being picky, now isn't it?

Where's Rivers Cuomo? Somewhere in the mid/high-twenties sounds about right.

I am a Mozart man, myself. But, after a few bottles of Scotch and getting comfortable in a new pair of women's underwear: I lean towards Beethoven.

[NOTE TO BOARD: Don't tell elc, but I think we need some sort of list intervention. I don't think he can go a single day without having to find a new list to pour through. This thread is a nothing more than a call for help.]
elc
Elliott Smith is #130, one ahead of Aimee Mann - I wonder if that's a coincidence, given that both artists have threads devoted to them right now. hmmm.
no sign of Mozart or Rivers Cuomo yet. They're only up to #88 on their site right now. You'll all be happy to know Ryan Adams is #90. The Replacements are #106.

Philadelphia must be a fucked-up place.

Mozart is too pretty and perfect.

Beethoven is more daring, emotional and writes catchier tunes.

Beethoven wins.

It really is all about the hooks.

damn straight. "Ode To Joy" will kick your ass and leave you beggin' for it to leave your brain.
Rob Gordon
He may be 97th but I think that song of his the 9th must place much higher on the song list.

turns out Mozart is #87, so those of you claiming Beethoven is better turn out to be wrong. Better luck next time.

Mozart is just TOO good in a way that doesn't move me as much as Beethoven.

i listen to them both A LOT, more than any other composers.

interesting group right ahead of Mozart:

#86 - The Ramones
#85 - The Velvet Underground
#84 - Fleetwood Mac
#83 - Willie Nelson
#82 - Leonard Cohen

Bach is #125 for all you classical fans out there.

too many white men, if you ask me (although at least Fleetwood Mac was a coed band some of the time). Chuck Berry at #107 is a crime.

Although I've never seem either performer live, I'm assuming that Philadelphians considered that Mozart would have a better stage presence than Beethoven, therefore breaking any hint of a tie in their stature as greatest artist. Plus, Mozart is the better songwriter, with "Ode to Joy" duly noted. I'm sure Bach also had his supporters in the City of Brotherly love, however his leanings toward masses and other blatantly religious pandering would turn off the more liberal voting element and group him nearer Amy Grant.

And in regard to hooks, I don't know where Rossini placed on this goofy list and I don't care, but this morning my wife was playing the overture to "Barber of Seville" and sometime this year I'm going to try to make a list of every TV show, cartoon and movie that used just a piece of this opera to make a particular scene even better.

There needs to be a shirt that says "The Ramones > Mozart"

I just realized Michael Jackson is 1 ahead of Elliott Smith. Eerie that 3 artists with threads on page one wind up together on the poll. I bet most of you will be disappointed to find out that Red Hot Chili Peppers are #79, right behind Ben Folds, and just ahead of Ani DiFranco.

No Way. I love Beethoven, but I say Mozart wins. Although, I like pretty and perfect. AND he was a bad ass for his time...look it up. wink.gif

so the "bad boy" wins? what is this, high school?

beethoven's put his "badness" into the music. there's real danger and suspense in there vs. mozart's flowery genius.
Rob Gordon
never will forget my first time (3 in all) that I saw the Cleveland Orchestra and chorus do The Ninth. I was about 12. Blew me away. Guess I kinda can relate to Alex De Large

Some of you are going to be very disappointed to find out who the actual greatest artists of all time turn out to be. Turns out U2 is # 5, followed by - Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix and The Who (at #12). I wonder who the top 4 will be Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Springsteen?

that's not what i meant. I don't have time to get into it right now (I'm supposed to be working), but i was thinking about how he took chances and was willing to take on some controversy with his operas. Not all of his choices were well received by conservative opera goers.

I hope it's Springsteen #1.

It's Philly, so Springsteen is either 1 or 2.
Mitchell
I'm looking forward to seeing the full list.

I am a Mozart man, myself. But, after a few bottles of Scotch and getting comfortable in a new pair of women's underwear: I lean towards Beethoven.

Mozart is too pretty and perfect.

Beethoven is more daring, emotional and writes catchier tunes.

Beethoven wins.

Beethoven's music has always hit me more than Mozart's. I can't deny Mozart's genius, but I've never developed a taste for Classical-era music, except for the Classical-Romantic cusp that Beethoven wrote in.

But I say Bach trumps all, despite being #125 on this silly list.

488 – BAD RELIGION - Los Angeles Is Burning; Infected
563 – SOCIAL DISTORTION – Ball & Chain

I always wondered who the better 80's/90's punk band was. Now I know. Thank you Philadelphia.

Any list that puts Dave Matthews over John Lennon is null and void in my mind.
Slackmo
most damning stretch:

486 – SOUL COUGHING - Super Bon Bon; Circles
487 – BIG STAR - September Gurls; You Get What You Deserve
488 – BAD RELIGION - Los Angeles Is Burning; Infected
elc
I like this one:

449 – BARRY MANILOW - Copacabana; Mandy
450 – JEWEL - Who Will Save Your Soul?; You Were Meant For Me
451 – COLE PORTER - You’re The Top; Begin The Beguine (performed by Artie Shaw)
452 – NICK CAVE - Bring It On; Red Right Hand
453 – THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN - Head On; Just Like Honey

Boy, it sure is convenient that the past 30-40 years produced 99% of the best artists of all time, huh?

732 – JAY Z – Dirt Off Your Shoulder

I've been saying it for weeks now and finally someone can agree with me.

James Blunt >>>> Jay Z

310 – THE KILLERS - Mr. Brightside; When You Were Young

Too low. The killers should be in at least the top 100 if not the top 25.

282 – HALL & OATES - She’s Gone; Fall In Philadelphia
283 – THE STROKES - Last Night; You Only Live Once

This is a pretty solid back-to-back pairing in the land of Derek. I am pretty sure it should be higher, though. At least hall and Oates should be. They're better than Mozart and Beethoven COMBINED.

So the list is upside down, basically. Neat idea.

biggest wtf seperation

Beethoven didn't really write good tunes at all. He didn't have much of a melodic gift.

Sounds spot on. Mix and match that top ten and you're good to go. They *truly* are the greats.

As are Elvis, David Bowie, The Clash, Prince, Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson and James Brown who all should be above the likes of The Dead and Joni Mitchell.

The one hit wonder Clash should be ahead of the Grateful Dead? laugh.gif Hell no. The Dead could play their instruments beautifully and write great tunes. They also were a pioneering live rock band. Alot of their live performances were simply improvised, like Pink Floyd pre-Wall.This explains quite a lot:

Saying the Clash belong higher on an "all time great list" over the Grateful Dead is easily more insane.
