Not the biggest fan of this list. Hopefully you guys will be.

By far the most exclusive of our decade lists--albums squeaked on to previous ones with only two high votes, think here you needed at least five or six. So don't get too disappointed or anything.
Mitchell
I'm kind of dreading this list in places.

How many votes did this get, 70 odd?

OK Computer yada yada etc.

All the Destroyer albums probably made the top 10.

I really doubt that OK Computer winning the whole thing will be the thing that upsets the most boarders. Plenty of well loved albums from this period are loathed by other members of the board. Wasn't much chance of someone going "OMG Leige and Lief is completely shit". I'd expect a few Arcade Fire comments along the way.

yeah these are definitely going to be some canon-rattling good times
Nick
I invested 45 minutes of my time compiling my list so I have a lot of interest in how this turns out.
Mitchell
What's that thing Bill says? "No vote, don't post in the thread."

Yeah, that's good.
Nick
Bill shouldn't say anything and just make our fucking lists. LOL

The Secret Machines - Now Here is Nowhere

Year
: 2004

US Chart Position: #33 Heatseeker

UK Chart Position: #49

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #52 (year), #293 (decade), #2339 (all-time)

AMG Says: "The Secret Machines aren't breaking any new ground on their debut full-length album, Now Here Is Nowhere; instead, they mix up elements of the last 35 years of rock history like the driving rhythms of '70s German rock, the sprawling guitar textures of late-'60s and '70s British psych, pounding drums lifted off of Led Zeppelin II, the expansive textures of arena-friendly '80s groups like U2 and Echo & the Bunnymen, and the aching indie rock vocals of the '90s -- basically the same template as the Flaming Lips circa 1993, early Mercury Rev, the Verve, or mid-period Ride [...] the Secret Machines have proven themselves as worthy heirs to the indie rock tradition that the Lips and the Rev established so well. Now Here Is Nowhere isn't on par with either of those band's best work, but it is a promising beginning and -- more importantly -- an intriguing and exciting listen."

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Year
: 2000

US Chart Position: #1

UK Chart Position: #1 / #29 in '03

Charting Singles: "The Real Slim Shady" (#4 US, #1 UK), "Stan" (#51 / #36 R&B US, #1 UK), "The Way I Am" (#58 / #26 R&B US, #8 UK), "Ballad" (#71 R&B US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #2 (year), #9 (decade), #138 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Albums List: #482

AMG Says: "Eminem is all about blurring the distinction between reality and fiction, humor and horror, satire and documentary, so it makes perfect sense that The Marshall Mathers LP is no more or no less "real" than The Slim Shady LP. It is, however, a fairly brilliant expansion of his debut, turning his spare, menacing hip-hop into a hyper-surreal, wittily disturbing thrill ride. The Marshal Mathers LP is both funnier and darker than his debut, with jabs at pop star peers ("The Real Slim Shady") sitting virtually side-by-side with violent fantasies of retribution ("Kim," written about the mother of his child -- who he reconciled with and married after recording this track). Eminem's writing is so sharp and clever that the jokes cut as deeply as the explorations of his ruptured psyches. Thankfully, the production is nearly as evocative as the raps, matching the tone of the lyrics with liquid basslines, stuttering rhythms, slight sound effects, and spacious soundscapes. There may not be overpowering hooks on every track -- just enough to ensure radio play -- but the album works as a whole, always drawing a listener into the paranoid, violent, and very funny world of Eminem. But, once you're in, Eminem makes no compromises. He doesn't care if you understand exactly where he's at, and he doesn't offer any apologies if you can't sort the fact from the fiction -- that's your job as a listener. As an artist, he's supposed to create his own world, and with this terrific second effort, he certainly has. It may be a world that is as intriguing as it is infuriating, but it is without question his own, which is far more than most of his peers -- in both hip-hop and rock -- are able to accomplish at the dawn of a new millennium."

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief

Year
: 2003

US Chart Position: #3

UK Chart Position: #1

Charting Singles: "There There" (#14 Modern Rock US, #4 UK), "Go to Sleep" (#32 Modern Rock US, #12 UK), "2 + 2 = 5" (#15 UK)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #4 (year), #30 (decade), #363 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Albums List: #212

AMG Says: "Radiohead's admittedly assumed dilemma: how to push things forward using just the right amounts of the old and the older in order to please both sides of the divide? Taking advantage of their longest running time to date, enough space is provided to quench the thirsts of resolute Bends devotees without losing the adventurous drive or experimentation that eventually got the group into hot water with many of those same listeners. Guitars churn and chime and sound like guitars more often than not; drums are more likely to be played by a human; and discernible verses are more frequently trailed by discernible choruses. So, whether or not the group is to be considered "back," there is a certain return to relatively traditional songcraft. Had the opening "2 + 2 = 5" and "Sit Down. Stand Up." been made two years before, each song's slowly swelling intensity would have plateaued a couple minutes in, functioning as mood pieces without any release; instead, each boils over into its own cathartic tantrum. The spook-filled "Sail to the Moon," one of several songs featuring prominent piano, rivals "Street Spirit" and hovers compellingly without much sense of force carrying it along. Somewhat ironically, minus a handful of the more conventionally structured songs, the album would be almost as fractured, remote, and challenging as Amnesiac. "Backdrifts" and "The Gloaming" feature nervous electronic backdrops, while the emaciated "We Suck Young Blood" is a laggard processional that, save for one outburst, shuffles along uneasily. At nearly an hour in length, this album doesn't unleash the terse blow delivered by its two predecessors. However, despite the fact that it seems more like a bunch of songs on a disc rather than a singular body, its impact is substantial. Regardless of all the debates surrounding the group, Radiohead have entered a second decade of record-making with a surplus of momentum."

And apparently so were most of the reviewers when they first heard it. It had a big hype period early, and then it faded very quickly. Still, Sail to the Moon is a top shelf tune and one of my favorite songs of theirs. The rest is just hokey.

Top 25 of 2003 is a lot more accurate then #1 for of the year for HTTT. As I've said before there are a handful of very good songs on it and a handful of songs with strong moments. Unfortunately the record is too long, rushed and suffers from trying to have songs that recall everyone of their previous four albums.
Mitchell
I also like the fact that four in I've heard all of them and am very familiar with them yet at the same time I didn't even consider voting for them.

I do hope that we don't see the list dominated by 2003/4 albums at the expense of better albums from the end of the previous decade.

Autechre, Daft Punk, Avalanches, Four Tet, Orbital, The Go! Team, Super Furry Animals, The Sleepy Jackson, Leftfield, Basement Jaxx, Boards of Canada, 2 Many DJ's, Primal Scream, Supergrass, Tricky, DJ Shadow, Doves, Elastica, British Sea Power, Spirtiualized and The Streets all have albums in the top 150.

bill's "an album needed six votes" warning makes a lot of this highly unlikely, as well as pretty much any dance or minimal electronic music, country music, and - frankly - most hip-hop from the era.

the coral might make it because they're very somb-friendly, Shack maybe because you pimped them, and Delgados because I voted for that one so I know it only needs 4-5 more supporters (and it deserves it). Which Gorky's did you pick: Barafundle, SDT or How I Long...? Having three very, very good albums but no consensus fave really hurts a band like that.
